After My Husband Abandoned Me for His Best Friend Chapter 1

Three weeks before the wedding, I sat on the edge of Diana Bryant's cream leather sofa and tried to look like I belonged there.

The apartment always felt too quiet. Too tall. The ceilings pressed down instead of lifting up. Cut peonies leaned in a crystal vase on the coffee table. Diana had arranged them herself. She arranged everything herself.

Brinley Gonzalez let herself in without knocking.

She never knocked.

“Di, look who I ran into downstairs,” she called, kicking off her heels in the foyer like a daughter coming home. She crossed the room and kissed Diana on the cheek. Then she turned and gave me a smile so warm you could almost miss the chill under it. “Iris. You look tired, sweetie.”

“A little,” I said.

Ethan looked up from his phone by the window. He ran a hand through his hair. He didn’t stand.

Brinley perched next to Diana and pulled out her phone. “Okay, I need a second opinion. Iris sent me a picture of her dress last week.” She scrolled. Her thumbnail was the color of ripe cherries. “It’s gorgeous, obviously. But—” She angled the screen toward Diana and lowered her voice, the way people do when they want to be overheard. “Don’t you think it washes her out a little? I just want her to look her best. For Ethan.”

Diana tilted her head. Studied the photo. Nodded slowly.

“Mm,” Diana said. “She does have that coloring.”

Ethan kept scrolling on his phone.

I counted the peonies. Nine. One of them was already dropping petals onto the glass.

“That’s so thoughtful of you, Brinley,” I said. My voice came out light and even. “I’ll think about it.”

She beamed. “That’s all I meant.”

Later, in the guest bathroom, I opened my Moleskine and wrote the date. Underneath, in small, precise letters: *Dress. Diana. Ethan silent.*

---

The rehearsal dinner was the following Friday.

At three in the afternoon, the event coordinator called me, breathless. The private dining room at the Fitzhugh had been double-booked. A charity gala. Six months on the calendar. She was so sorry.

I stood in the middle of a florist’s shop with a bouquet of ranunculus in my hand and closed my eyes.

“Which charity,” I said.

“The Gonzalez Foundation, ma’am.”

I called Ethan from the sidewalk.

He sighed before I finished the sentence. That soft, patient sigh, like I was a car alarm he had to wait out.

“Iris. She didn’t mean it. She’s been running that charity for years. Can you just let it go? Be the bigger person.”

A cab honked. A woman in a fur coat brushed past me and muttered something I didn’t catch.

I looked at my own reflection in the florist’s window. Small. Bundled up. Alone on a New York sidewalk in November.

“Of course,” I said.

I hung up and stood there for a long time.

Then I called the coordinator back and booked the private garden room at the Chatham instead. Twice the price. I put it on my own card.

---

Five days before the wedding, the phone rang at 12:07 a.m.

Ethan sat up in the dark. I felt the mattress shift.

“Brin? Slow down. Okay. Okay, I’m coming.” He was already reaching for his jeans. “Her pipe burst. Whole kitchen. She’s freaking out.”

“It’s midnight,” I said.

He leaned over and kissed my forehead. His mouth was warm. His mind was already gone.

“Go back to sleep, babe. I’ll be an hour.”

I listened to the front door click shut.

He came home at four.

The next morning I stopped in her lobby to drop off a box of favors. The building manager recognized me from the guest list. He smiled kindly.

“Glad we got that little drip sorted last night, huh? Ten minutes and she was good as new. Nice guy, the super.”

I smiled back. My cheeks ached.

Upstairs on the sidewalk, I opened the notebook again. *Midnight. Pipe. Ten minutes. Four a.m.*

---

Three days before the wedding my chest caught fire.

I woke up unable to breathe right and by lunch I was in an emergency room, wrapped in a paper gown, listening to a resident say the word *pneumonia* like it wasn’t a small nuclear device dropped into my week.

Ethan called Brinley from the hallway. I heard him through the curtain because he never learned to lower his voice.

I heard her laugh too. Bright and clean.

“She’s probably just overwhelmed. The timing is a little dramatic, isn’t it?”

Ethan laughed with her. A nervous, obliging little laugh.

Hours later my phone buzzed. Ethan’s cousin Paige. *I’m so sorry. I thought you should know what she said.*

I lay very still. The IV ticked. The monitor beeped. Somewhere down the hall a woman was crying.

I reached for the call button and asked for billing.

The woman who came in had a kind, tired face and a clipboard.

“I’d like to update my emergency contact,” I said. My voice was hoarse but it was steady. “Brinley Gonzalez.” I spelled it. I gave her address. “And please, send all the invoices directly to her. She’s family.”

The woman wrote it down without looking up.

I closed my eyes and, for the first time in weeks, I smiled.
