Substitute Bride: Curing The Disabled Billionaire Chapter 1

"Faye, you know about the Sinclair engagement," Robert Hayes stated. The words hung in the cigar‑choked air of the study, heavy and oppressive.

Faye looked at her father, then at her stepmother, Susan, perched on the leather sofa like a smug cat. She chose the single armchair farthest from them, the worn fabric a small comfort against her back. Robert's jaw tightened.

"It's time to honor that agreement."

Faye remained silent. She adjusted her glasses.

Susan sighed theatrically. "Faye, darling, we know this is a sacrifice. But your sister, Chloe, is so young. Her life can't be ruined by marrying a... cripple."

Faye's gaze dropped to Susan's perfectly manicured nails as they wrapped around a porcelain coffee cup. They had brought her back from the countryside to be a substitute, a tool.

"I refuse."

Her voice was soft, barely a whisper, but it sliced through the room's tension.

Robert slammed his hand on the mahogany desk. "You have no right! This family has fed and clothed you. This is how you repay us!"

Susan placed a hand on his arm, her expression sharpening into a razor‑thin smile as she turned to Faye. "We didn't want to force you, of course."

She slid a manila envelope across the coffee table. It stopped inches from Faye's knee.

Faye's eyes fixed on it. Her heart seized, her stomach twisting into a hard knot. She fought to keep her face blank.

Susan savored the flicker of panic in Faye's eyes. "The official report on your grandmother's death," she purred. "An accident, they called it. But details can be... reinterpreted."

Faye's fingers dug into the armrests. Her knuckles turned white. Her grandmother—the only person who had ever shown her kindness. Her only weakness.

"If you're not a good girl," Susan continued, her voice dripping with poison, "I worry some unfortunate new evidence might find its way to the police. It would be such a shame for your grandmother's reputation to be dragged through the mud."

Faye slowly lifted her head. The lenses of her glasses couldn't hide the chill in her eyes. It was a bluff, but it could shatter the one good memory she had.

Her grandmother's last words echoed: Be careful, Faye.

To find out what really happened, she needed access, power, an entry point into their world.

The Sinclair family, whom she had been warned to fear, suddenly looked like an opportunity, a stepping stone.

"I need money," Faye said flatly. She needed capital for her own plans.

Robert and Susan exchanged a triumphant glance. Greed they understood.

"Of course, dear," Susan said, pulling a checkbook from her purse. She scribbled a number and tore it out. "You've earned it."

Faye took the check, folded it, and tucked it into her pocket.

"When is the wedding?"

"Tomorrow," Robert said. "The Sinclairs don't like to wait."

Faye stood. "I understand."

She turned and walked toward the door, her back straight, her small frame fragile in the cavernous room.

"Oh, and Faye," Susan called out. "When you get to the Sinclair estate, remember who you are. Don't cause any trouble for us."

Faye didn't turn around. A tiny, ice‑cold smile touched her lips.

She closed the door, shutting out their smug faces.

In the dim hallway, she leaned against the wall, her legs suddenly weak. She took off her glasses. The meek, plain girl vanished, replaced by sharp, intelligent eyes filled with chilling resolve.

She pulled out her phone and typed a quick, encrypted message: Plan B is a go. New target: Sinclair Group.
