My Dead Alpha Husband Returned with My Sister Chapter 1

The council meeting ended an hour ahead of schedule, leaving me with an empty afternoon. I climbed the oak staircase of Blackthorn Manor, eager to shed my mourning dress and sleep off a pounding headache.

A burst of laughter cut through the quiet corridor.

It came from the sitting room of my mother-in-law, Morgana. The heavy mahogany door stood ajar by an inch, spilling warm yellow light across the carpet.

"She actually reviewed the harvest accounts before noon," Selene’s voice drifted out, sharp and amused. As Morgana’s favorite niece, she spent more time in this wing than in her own quarters. "She wore that awful high-collared black gown again. She looks like a walking ghost."

"Let her wear black," Morgana replied, the clink of porcelain punctuating her words. "It suits her. For twelve months, she has run this estate like an obedient little pack mule. Every debt paid, every tenant calmed, all because she thinks she’s honoring my son's memory."

Selene giggled. "The great Ariana Vale, reduced to an unpaid housekeeper. Does she truly believe the mate bond demands her martyrdom?"

"She believes in fairy tales," Morgana sneered. "She thinks her wolf belongs to a dead Alpha. Meanwhile, my Kael is basking under the southern sun, living without rules, without pack burdens, and certainly without her."

The air turned thin in my throat. My fingers flattened against the wood frame.

*Kael is basking under the southern sun.*

The words did not fit together. I had watched his coffin descend into the frozen earth. I had spent three hundred and sixty-five nights clutching the scent of cedar on his pillow until the smell faded to nothing.

"What about the Vale Pack lands?" Selene asked, her tone dropping lower. "The council elders from her father’s old territory sent another inquiry yesterday. They want to know when she plans to retake the seat."

"They can ask all they want," Morgana said dismissively. "She will never claim it. Did Nora bring up the Moonroot Tonic this morning?"

"She watched Ariana take the cup directly from the tray."

"Tell Nora to increase it to five drops tomorrow," Morgana ordered, her tone hardening. "Three drops kept her wolf sluggish. Five will snap the connection entirely. In another month, her wolf spirit will be completely dormant. A broken wolf cannot claim an Alpha seat. By winter, the Vale territory will be absorbed into Blackthorn holdings permanently."

"And if she notices the weakness?"

"She already thinks it’s grief," Morgana laughed. "Grief makes she-wolves frail. It’s the perfect excuse."

I did not scream. I did not shove the door open and demand an answer. Instead, a bizarre, cold smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.

I pulled back from the door frame, turned on my soft-soled flats, and walked down the hall without making a sound.

My bedroom was cold.

On the nightstand rested a crystal glass filled with dark, herbal tea—the Moonroot Tonic Nora brought every single day at noon to "restore my vitality."

I picked up the glass. The liquid smelled faintly of honey and bitter bark. For an entire year, I had swallowed it down to the last drop, believing Morgana cared about my health.

I tipped the glass over the soil of the potted fern beside my desk, watching the black liquid vanish into the dirt.

Then I sat at my desk and pulled up the encrypted terminal connected to the municipal emergency database.

My fingers flew across the keyboard, typing out the file code stamped onto my husband's death certificate: *B-7741-K.*

The screen flashed blue. The file expanded.

A photo of a charred SUV at the bottom of Dead Man’s Ravine.

A list of recovered personal effects: one platinum signet ring bearing the Blackthorn crest, a half-melted silver watch, and a burnt leather wallet containing Kael's pack identification card.

I stared at the screen, scrolling line by line.

Nothing.

I clicked through the subfolders.

No coroner's signature. No medical examiner's notes.

I picked up my mobile and dialed the direct line to the regional records office.

The line rang four times before a gruff voice answered. "County Records, Officer Miller."

"Miller, this is Ariana Vale," I said, keeping my voice level and calm. "I need you to pull the physical archive on case B-7741-K."

A brief pause rustled over the receiver. "Lady Vale? That's... that’s Alpha Kael’s closed file. It’s been archived for a full year. Is there a tax issue with the estate?"

"Open the physical folder right now, Miller."

"Yes, ma'am. Hold on." Footsteps echoed through the speaker, followed by the metallic screech of a filing cabinet drawer. Paper rustled. "Alright, I have it. What are you looking for?"

"Read me the pathologist's name on the autopsy report."

Silence stretched between us. Five seconds. Ten seconds.

"Miller?"

"Lady Vale... there isn't an autopsy report in here."

My grip tightened around the plastic casing of the phone. "Check the secondary tab. The wolf bloodline verification test. Every pack Alpha requires a resonance match before a death certificate can be issued by the state."

"I know the protocol, ma'am," Miller muttered, his breath catching the microphone. "I'm looking at the checklist. The bloodline test section is stamped 'Waived by Next of Kin.'"

"Who signed the waiver?"

"Elder Morgana Blackthorn. The note says the body was too incinerated for genetic recovery, so visual confirmation of personal effects and dental reconstruction was accepted."

"Dental reconstruction?" I pressed my thumb hard into the desk edge. "Whose dental clinic supplied the baseline records?"

"A private clinic in the lower district. St. Jude’s Dental."

"Kael never used a clinic in the lower district," I said, each syllable dropping like ice onto the glass desk. "He was the heir to the Blackthorn lineage. His dental and genetic records were held exclusively by the royal pack infirmary."

"Ma'am, I only have what was filed," Miller sounded nervous now. "The coroner signed off based on your mother-in-law's declaration. She said family grief made an extended inquiry too painful."

"Who processed the transport of the remains from the ravine?"

"A private mortuary team. Hired directly by Blackthorn Manor."

"Not the city forensics squad?"

"No. They were dismissed before they reached the crash site. The Blackthorn guards secured the perimeter within twenty minutes of the vehicle catching fire."

"Thank you, Miller. Do not log this call in the inquiry ledger."

"Understood, Lady Vale."

I hung up.

The room was completely still.

I rose from the chair and walked toward the fireplace. Mounted above the mantelpiece was a life-sized oil portrait of Kael. He sat tall in his formal uniform, dark eyes gleaming with an arrogance I had once mistaken for confidence, a slight smirk playing on his sculpted lips.

For twelve months, I had brought fresh white lilies to this room every Monday.

For twelve months, I had let the poison burn through my veins while I bled my father’s fortune dry to pay his family's debts.

I gazed into the painted eyes of the man I had mourned until my throat was raw.

There had been no body.

There had been no blood test.

There had only been an empty car, a silver ring, and a mother eager to lock me in chains while her son walked free.

"Who did I bury in that vault, Kael?" I whispered into the empty room.

My reflection in the glass frame showed dark eyes that no longer carried tears—only the cold, waking fire of an Alpha who had finally stopped grieving.
