Chapter 4

Lilyana

The smell of old paper and dust usually comforted me, but today, the towering, gothic bookshelves of the university library felt less like a sanctuary and more like a maze closing in on me. I hid myself in the deepest, most isolated aisle of the basement archive, my knees pulled tightly against my chest as I sat on a low wooden stool. My scraped palms from yesterday’s fall were still stinging, throbbing in sync with the erratic beat of my heart.

I kept my hands shoved deep inside my pockets, terrified that the platinum watch would somehow slip out again. My mind kept rewinding to the economics lecture. 'I don’t let anyone else break my toys.' Zander’s whispered words were a toxic loop in my head. He didn't save me out of kindness. He did it to assert dominance. To prove I belonged to him in some twisted, sick game of campus hierarchy.

A sharp, sudden rustle of pages nearby made me freeze.

I held my breath, every muscle in my body locking up. 'Just a student,' I told myself. 'Just someone looking for a book.'

"You're a hard woman to find, charity case."

The lazy, deep baritone echoed through the narrow aisle, sending a cold spike of adrenaline straight through my veins. I snapped my head up.

Zander Hudson was leaning against the heavy oak bookshelf at the end of the aisle, his massive frame completely blocking the only exit. He had his hands shoved into the pockets of a black varsity jacket, his broad shoulders casting a long, suffocating shadow over me. The dim overhead light caught the sharp, cruel perfection of his jawline. His icy eyes were locked onto me, tracking my sudden, panicked flinch with predatory satisfaction.

"Z-Zander," I breathed, the stutter slipping out before I could choke it down. I pushed myself off the stool, backing away until the solid wood of the bookshelf behind me pressed into my spine. "What are you doing here? This is the restricted archive."

"I go wherever the fuck I want on this campus, nerd," he said, stepping forward. His movements were slow, deliberate, and terrifyingly graceful. "And right now, I'm here to collect."

"Collect what?" I demanded, trying to force a strength into my voice that I absolutely did not feel. I gripped the edges of the bookshelf behind me, my nails digging into the dark wood. "I don't have anything you want."

"Don't play stupid. It doesn't suit you," Zander sneered, closing the distance between us until he was standing less than a foot away. The sheer physical presence of him was overwhelming, crowding my vision, stealing the very oxygen from the air. He reached out, his large hand slamming against the shelf right next to my ear. The heavy wood groaned under the impact. He leaned down, bringing his face level with mine, his dark eyes burning with an intense, aggressive heat. "I ruined a professor's career path today to save your pathetic ass from getting humiliated. I told you before. You owe me."

"I didn't ask for your help!" I hissed, my temper flaring through the terror. The memory of London—of being backed into corners and silent—made a raw, defensive rage boil up in my gut. "You did that for your own sick ego! You just wanted to show off!"

"Watch your mouth," Zander growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register that vibrated right through my chest. His other hand shot out, his fingers wrapping firmly around the fabric of my oversized sweater, pulling me an inch closer to him. "You don't get to talk back to me. You're a nobody here, Lilyana. A charity case with too many fucking secrets. First that watch, now this? I know a liar when I see one. You're hiding something, and I’m going to find out what it is. But until then? Your payback starts now."

"Let go of me," I whispered, my chest heaving against his. I could feel the heat radiating off his body, the terrifyingly tight grip he had on my life. "Please, Zander. Just... leave me alone."

"Not a chance," he murmured, his eyes dropping to my lips for a fraction of a second, his possessiveness turning into something thicker, heavier, and completely lethal. "You're mine to deal with now. You don't get to run—"

"I believe the lady asked you to let her go, Zander."

A calm, smooth voice sliced through the suffocating tension of the aisle.

Zander froze. The muscle in his jaw clenched violently. Slowly, agonizingly, he let go of my sweater and turned his head toward the entrance of the aisle.

Standing there was a carbon copy of Zander's striking genetics, but built with an entirely different aura. Zachary Hudson stood with his hands casually slipped into the pockets of his tailored trousers, a crisp white button-down shirt hugging his lean, athletic frame. He wore a pair of thin, silver wire-rimmed glasses that gave him a brilliant, intensely intellectual look. But beneath the polite, gentlemanly smile on his face, his eyes were sharp as scalpels.

"Zachary," Zander spat, his voice dripping with pure venom. He didn't step away from me, maintaining his possessive stance as if marking his territory. "What the fuck do you want? Get lost. This doesn't concern you."

Zachary didn't flinch. He walked into the aisle with effortless grace, his eyes shifting from his brother’s aggressive posture directly to my wide, terrified eyes. A look of genuine, gentle concern washed over his face, completely contrasting Zander's raw cruelty.

"Are you alright, Lilyana?" Zachary asked softly, completely ignoring his brother.

"S-She's fine," Zander barked, stepping directly between us, shielding me from Zachary's view. "I told you to back off, Zach. I'm handling something."

"You're harassing a freshman in a basement, Zander. That's not 'handling' anything," Zachary countered, his tone remaining perfectly calm, though a dangerous edge crept into his words. He took another step forward, standing face-to-face with his brother. The physical tension between the two was explosive, like a match hovering over a powder keg. "Actually, it's funny I found you both here. Lilyana and I had an appointment."

I blinked behind my glasses, completely bewildered. "We... we did?"

Zachary looked past Zander’s shoulder, giving me a reassuring, brilliant smile that felt like the first breath of fresh air I’d had in days. "Of course. Did you forget? You're my private study partner for the advanced honors seminar. The Dean approved it this morning. We're supposed to be reviewing the research syllabus right now."

Zander's entire body went rigid. He turned around to look at me, his eyes wide with sharp suspicion, before snapping his gaze back to his brother. "Your study partner? Since when do you take charity cases into your precious honors circle, Zach? Don't bullshit me."

"It's not bullshit, little brother," Zachary said, his voice smooth as silk as he extended a hand toward me, completely bypassing Zander. "Lilyana has a remarkable academic file. I requested her personally. So, if you're quite finished wasting her time with whatever playground nonsense you're pulling, she needs to come with me."

I didn't hesitate. The moment Zachary offered an escape, I slid past Zander's massive frame, my shoulder brushing against his varsity jacket as I scrambled toward Zachary's side. My hands were still shaking, but the sheer relief of having a protector outweighed the confusion of why Zachary even knew who I was.

"Thank you, Zachary," I murmured, keeping my head down, my voice trembling.

"Anytime, Lilyana," Zachary replied gently, his hand coming to rest lightly, protectively against the small of my back. The gesture was warm, polite, and entirely respectful, but the moment his palm touched my sweater, the entire energy in the room shifted.

I looked at Zander.

My breath caught in my throat. Zander’s face had completely transformed. The arrogant, mocking smirk was entirely gone, replaced by a terrifying, feral darkness. His fists were clenched so tightly at his sides that his knuckles were stark white, his veins bulging against his tan skin. His icy eyes weren't just angry—they were blazing with a raw, savage, and intensely possessive jealousy as he stared at his brother’s hand on my back.

He looked like he wanted to rip Zachary limb from limb. He looked like an alpha wolf watching another predator touch what belonged to him.

"Take your hand off her, Zachary," Zander growled, his voice a low, animalistic warning that made the hairs on my arms stand up. He stepped forward, his eyes locking onto mine with a dangerous promise that made my heart stop. "She isn't your partner for anything. Do you fucking hear me? She's mine."
