The Fake Nerd is a Secret Billionaire Heiress Chapter 1
Lilyana
"Sign the bottom line, Miss Carter. And remember, Hudson University doesn't tolerate academic slippage from its charity cases."
The administrative clerk didn't even look up at me. She just shoved a thick stack of registration papers across the counter, her manicured acrylic nail tapping impatiently against the desk. To her, I was just another nameless face from the system, a charity-grant student who should be grateful to breathe the same air as the elite trust-fund brats flooding the campus.
"I understand," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I forced a meek, compliant smile, adjusting the thick, heavy frames of the oversized glasses sliding down the bridge of my nose. They felt heavy, unnatural, and completely ugly.
Perfect.
"Good. Your scholarship covers tuition and basic boarding. Anything else comes out of your own pocket. Don't expect handouts," she added, her tone dripping with casual disdain. She finally looked up, her eyes scanning my oversized, faded gray thrift-store sweater and worn-out jeans. I could see the immediate judgment flashing in her eyes. A nobody. A loser.
"I won't. Thank you for your help," I murmured.
I grabbed my stamp-approved schedule and squeezed the papers tightly against my chest, stepping out of the air-conditioned administration building and into the blistering afternoon heat of the campus courtyard.
My heart was hammering against my ribs, a familiar, suffocating panic clawing at my throat. I looked around at the towering gothic architecture, the sprawling green lawns, and the groups of students laughing and talking. They wore designer clothes, carried luxury bags, and exuded an effortless aura of wealth.
They had no idea. They couldn't know.
I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, the phantom sounds of shattering glass and cruel, mocking laughter from London echoing in my mind. The brutal betrayal that had shattered my life, leaving me broken and bleeding in a world I thought I ruled. I had left everything behind. The designer gowns, the private jets, the multi-billion-dollar Carter name—all buried under a mountain of lies just so I could survive. Here, I wasn't an heiress. I was just Lilyana, the poor scholarship nerd. I just needed to stay invisible. Three years of keeping my head down, and then I could disappear for good.
I opened my eyes, took a deep, shaky breath, and started walking toward the quad, keeping my gaze firmly locked onto the concrete pavement.
'Just walk,' I told myself. 'Don't look at anyone. Don't make eye contact.'
BAM!
A heavy, leather basketball slammed violently into my right shoulder, the sheer force of the impact spinning me around. I gasped, my feet tangling together as my balance completely failed. I hit the hard concrete court with a bruising thud. The registration papers flew from my grip, scattering across the ground like confetti.
A sharp, searing pain shot up my palms as they scraped against the rough asphalt.
"Fucks sake, look out!" a loud, arrogant voice barked from a few feet away.
I groaned, my vision blurring. My glasses had flown off my face, landing somewhere a few feet away. Panic, cold and sharp, flooded my veins. Without the glasses, my face was too exposed, too bare. I scrambled onto my hands and knees, frantically sweeping my scraped fingers across the concrete, trying to find them.
"Hey. I'm talking to you, nerd."
A shadow fell over me, completely blocking out the afternoon sun. I froze. Heavy, expensive designer basketball sneakers stopped right in front of my face.
Slowly, I looked up.
Even with my blurred vision, he was impossible to miss. He was massive, easily six-foot-three, with a lean, heavily muscled build that screamed athletic dominance. His dark hair was damp with sweat, clinging to his forehead, and his features were sharp, aristocratic, and devastatingly handsome. But it was his eyes that made my blood run cold—a piercing, icy gaze filled with an overwhelming, dangerous arrogance.
Zander Hudson. The campus king. The golden boy basketball star whose family practically owned the university.
He was looking down at me like I was a piece of trash stuck to the bottom of his shoe. He didn't offer a hand. He didn't apologize. He just stood there, spinning a basketball on his index finger, a cruel, amused smirk playing on his lips.
"Are you deaf, or just stupid?" Zander sneered, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with mocking authority. "You walked right into the middle of a team drill. You're lucky you didn't ruin the ball with your face."
My chest tightened, a volatile mixture of fear and white-hot fury swirling in my gut. Back in London, no one would have dared speak to me like this. I would have ruined his entire family's portfolio with a single phone call. But I wasn't that girl anymore. I had to swallow the rage. I had to play the victim.
"I-I'm sorry," I whispered, my voice trembling as I finally found my thick glasses and shoved them back onto my face. I looked down, hiding behind the plastic frames. "I wasn't... I wasn't looking where I was going."
"Yeah, clearly," Zander laughed, a harsh, dismissive sound. A few of his teammates on the court laughed along with him. "Next time, keep your eyes open, charity case. The quad isn't a playground for losers who can't afford a map."
"Get lost, Zander! Leave the poor girl alone!" a girl shouted from the sidelines, but nobody stepped closer. Nobody dared to actually cross him.
"Shut up, Madison," Zander called back carelessly, not even looking away from me. He stepped closer, his shadow pressing down on me, suffocatingly intense. "Well? Are you going to sit there on your ass all day, or are you going to pick up my ball?"
The basketball had rolled a few inches away, resting right against my scraped knee. My hands were shaking. I hated him. I absolutely hated him. Every aristocratic line of his face, his possessive aura, his casual cruelty—he was everything I had run away from.
"I'll... I'll give it to you," I muttered quietly.
I reached out my right hand, grasping the heavy leather of the basketball. But as I lifted it, the oversized, stretched-out sleeve of my thrifted sweater caught on the textured surface of the ball, pulling back violently toward my elbow.
The fabric slid away, exposing my bare wrist to the bright sunlight.
And there, gleaming against my pale skin, was a watch. It wasn't a cheap plastic digital watch. It was a solid platinum, ultra-rare, vintage UK luxury watch—a priceless, customized heirloom passed down through generations of the Carter family. A watch worth more than a six-figure sum. I had worn it out of pure habit, a stupid, comforting link to the home I had lost, always keeping it safely hidden beneath my baggy clothes.
Until now.
I saw the exact moment Zander's eyes locked onto it.
The amused, mocking smirk vanished from his face instantly. His icy eyes narrowed, turning razor-sharp as they focused entirely on the gleaming platinum and the intricate, unmistakable vintage watch face on my wrist. He stopped spinning his ball. The entire atmosphere around us shifted, turning heavy, dangerous, and suffocatingly tense.
Panic seized my chest, squeezing the air right out of my lungs.
"Wait a minute," Zander murmured, his voice suddenly losing all its casual mockery, replaced by a dark, intense gravity.
Before I could pull my hand back, before I could hide it, Zander dropped his basketball. In one fluid, terrifyingly fast motion, he lunged forward, his large, calloused hand shooting out and wrapping tightly around my wrist.
His grip was unyielding, iron-clad, pinning my arm in place.
"Hey! Let go of me!" I gasped, my heart leaping into my throat. I tried to pull away, but he didn't budge an inch. His touch was electric, sending a strange, terrifying jolt of heat straight up my arm, but the sheer terror of exposure drowned it out.
"Where the fuck did you get this?" Zander demanded, his eyes blazing as he stared down at the watch, his thumb rubbing roughly against the platinum casing. He looked up at me, his gaze drilling straight through my ugly glasses, searching my face with a terrifying, obsessive intensity. "This is a vintage piece. UK edition. Only five of these exist in the entire world, nerd. I know, because my father tried to buy one at a London auction last year and got outbid by a shadow billionaire."
"I-I-I don't know what you're talking about!" I stammered, my voice cracking in genuine horror, the natural stutter breaking through my defenses. My mind was racing, screaming at me to run, to escape. "It's—it's just a piece of junk! Let me go!"
"Don't lie to me," Zander growled, stepping completely into my personal space, his towering frame forcing me back against the concrete boundary wall of the court. He leaned down, his face inches from mine, his breath warm against my skin. His eyes were dark, dangerous, and utterly possessive, locking me in place. "A charity case wearing a six-figure watch? Who the hell are you really?"
