The Fake Nerd is a Secret Billionaire Heiress
Chapter 5
Lilyana
"Look at her. Seriously, what the fuck is she even wearing?"
"Is that a grandmother’s sweater? Did she find it in a dumpster?"
The harsh, venomous whispers followed me the moment I stepped into the central quad of the engineering plaza. I kept my chin tucked down, my eyes focused entirely on the concrete paving stones beneath my worn-out sneakers. After yesterday's high-stakes standoff in the library basement between Zander and Zachary, I knew it was only a matter of time before the campus ecosystem reacted. I was a virus to these trust-fund heirs—an untouchable scholarship case who had somehow caught the attention of the two most powerful brothers on campus.
"Hey! Charity case! I'm talking to you!"
I stopped. My muscles tensed, a heavy weight settling into the pit of my stomach.
I looked up slowly, adjusting the thick plastic frames of my glasses. Standing on the wide, concrete steps of the student lounge balcony just ten feet ahead of me was Madison Rhodes. She was flanked by three of her sorority sycophants, all of them holding oversized plastic cups and smirking down at me. Madison looked like a pristine, venomous doll in her pleated designer skirt and perfectly tailored cropped jacket.
"Are you deaf, Lilyana?" Madison sneered, her voice carrying across the courtyard, instantly drawing the attention of dozens of students lounging on the grass. "Or do those ugly-ass glasses block your ears too?"
"I don't want any trouble, Madison," I said quietly, keeping my hands buried deep inside the pockets of my baggy sweater, making sure my platinum watch was completely hidden. "I'm just trying to get to my lab."
"Oh, hear that, girls? The charity case doesn't want any trouble," Madison mocked, turning to her friends, who burst into loud, coordinated giggles. She turned back to me, her eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious hatred. "Too fucking bad. You think you can just arrive here, scam your way into our classes, steal expensive jewelry, and crawl around the Hudson brothers like a desperate little parasite? You don't belong here. And it’s time someone cleaned up the trash."
Before I could even process her words, Madison reached down and grabbed a massive, industrial-sized janitorial bucket resting by her feet. It was filled to the brim with gray, filthy, stagnant water—the leftover runoff from the campus cleaning crew, floating with thick suds, dirt, and chemical grime.
"Welcome to Hudson University, bitch," Madison yelled.
With a violent heave, she tipped the bucket over the balcony rail.
SPLASH.
A wall of freezing, putrid water hit me squarely in the chest. The sheer weight of the volume knocked me back a half-step, the disgusting liquid soaking instantly through my thick sweater, weighing it down like lead. The filthy water drenched my hair, plastering the dark strands to my face, and splattered violently across my glasses, completely blinding me. The toxic scent of cheap bleach and old floor grease filled my nose, making me gag.
"Oh my god! Direct hit!"
"Jesus, that's brutal!"
A massive, deafening roar of laughter exploded across the quad. Dozens of students pointed and jeered, pulling out their phones to record the spectacle. I could hear the rapid clicks of camera shutters, the mocking taunts, the absolute glee they all took in watching a nobody get torn to pieces.
For a split second, the world went completely dark. The cold water seeping into my skin transformed into a different memory—the cold, rain-slicked pavement of London, the sound of Ethan's cruel laughter as he threw my belongings into the street, the shattering of my old life. A heavy, suffocating panic clawed at my chest. I felt a sob building in my throat. My hands trembled inside my wet pockets. 'I-I can't... I need to run...'
But then, something inside me snapped.
It wasn't a slow burn; it was a sudden, blinding flash of pure, ancestral steel. The Carter blood in my veins, the generation of cutthroat global rulers who had built empires from nothing, completely took over. I was a multi-billionaire heiress. My family owned banks, media conglomerates, and prime real estate across three continents. Madison Rhodes was the daughter of a regional corporate executive. Her entire family's net worth wouldn't cover the cost of my father’s private yacht.
How dare she.
I didn't cry. I didn't wail, and I didn't hide my face.
Slowly, deliberately, I reached up with a steady hand and pulled the drenched, foggy glasses off my face. I didn't need them right now. I wiped the filthy water from my eyes with the back of my hand, throwing my head back. I straightened my spine, standing completely erect, my shoulders square, abandoning the slouched, submissive posture of the scholarship nerd.
I looked directly up at the balcony, locking my eyes straight onto Madison.
Without the glasses obscuring my face, my true gaze was fully exposed—piercing, icy, and radiating a freezing, lethal aura of absolute old-money authority. It was the look my father used right before he liquidated a competitor's entire existence. It was a look of pure, unadulterated supremacy.
The laughter on the balcony died instantly.
Madison’s mocking smile froze on her face. She took an involuntary step backward, her hand flying to her throat as she stared down at me. The absolute disgust in her eyes vanished, replaced by a sudden, paralyzing flash of primitive fear. She looked like she had just realized she hadn't stepped on a worm, but a sleeping viper.
"Wh-what the hell are you looking at?" Madison stammered, her voice cracking, trying desperately to maintain her dominant facade. "You think you're tough? You're a pathetic charity case soaked in mop water! Look at yourself!"
"Is that the best you can do, Madison?" I said. My voice wasn't a desperate whisper anymore. It was low, perfectly controlled, and laced with a terrifyingly calm aristocratic disdain that carried clearly across the silent courtyard. "A playground prank? How incredibly pathetic."
"Shut the fuck up!" Madison hissed, her face turning an ugly shade of red as she gripped the balcony railing. "I will have you kicked out of this school by tonight! You're a thief and a nobody!"
"You can try," I replied, stepping forward, ignoring the wet clothes clinging to my skin. I didn't look like a victim; I looked like a queen ruling a courtroom, entirely unbothered by the dirt she had thrown at me. "But remember one thing, Madison. The higher you think you stand, the harder you're going to fall when I decide to break your little pedestal."
The surrounding crowd of students grew completely quiet, the phones recording the scene slowly lowering. No one was laughing anymore. The sheer, suffocating intensity of the power dynamic shifting in real-time left the entire quad paralyzed.
...
At the edge of the quad, standing beneath the shade of a massive oak tree, Zander Hudson stood perfectly still. He had been walking back from the athletic facility when he heard the commotion, arriving just in time to see Madison dump the bucket of filthy water over the scholarship girl's head.
His first instinct had been an explosive, possessive anger. He had clenched his fists, ready to march over and rip Madison apart for touching something—someone—he had already claimed as his exclusive territory.
But he hadn't moved. Because what happened next had completely shattered his reality.
Zander watched, his breath catching in his throat, as Lilyana Carter pulled off her glasses. He didn't see a crying, broken charity case scrambling away in humiliation. He saw her stand up, her spine turning to absolute steel, her entire presence shifting into something incredibly powerful, incredibly dangerous, and breathtakingly elite.
He watched her lock eyes with Madison, delivering a quiet, freezing threat that had actually made the campus queen bee tremble in fear.
The afternoon sun caught the sharp, stunning lines of Lilyana's face, unhidden by the plastic frames. Her eyes weren't the dull, submissive eyes of a nerd; they were the eyes of a fierce, unbreakable goddess who looked down on the entire university as if she owned it.
A heavy, intense heat coiled tight in Zander’s chest, his heart hammering against his ribs with a feral intensity. He couldn't take his eyes off her. He was completely, utterly mesmerized. Every possessive instinct he had wasn't just triggered—it was entirely consumed. She wasn't a toy. She was a beautifully dangerous mystery, and Zander knew, with absolute, terrifying certainty, that he would do whatever it took to completely conquer her.
