The CEO's Contract Bride: Marriage On Paper Chapter 1
Natasha
It was a beautiful day indeed. The sky was so blue that it made me wonder if the sky changed overnight.
I'd never been the one to gaze at the sky or appreciate nature however, today was different, even the breeze felt friendly.
"Kenzie!" I said excitedly as I reached the receptionist's desk. She was the most friendly person I've ever met. Little wonder she had her job anyway.
"You... your hair," She whistled excitedly. I was blushing like wildfire. It felt good to get acknowledged.
"I did a little thing with it," I muttered shyly. "You have such keen eyes for details."
The ringing of the telephone interrupted Kenzie's reply so I waited. She was talking to the CEO, Bruce Stamford, a man known in the business for his charisma, appearance, and ethics.
He was the perfect gentleman in the eyes of the public but at work, he was a total workaholic. What's wrong with being a workaholic, you would ask. Well, it's really bad when it affects the employees too.
I worked three days, two nights straight the day I was hired. But then, I got paid for the stress. These wealthy people, always settling things with money.
Kenzie dropped the telephone.
"There's an emergency meeting!" Kenzie announced. "I think our boss is quite furious. His voice... you know how he sounds when he is angry."
Of course, I knew. "I guess I'll have to run over!" I told her.
"Stay strong!" Kenzie encouraged me, smiling so widely.
I rushed down to the elevator and went all the way to the sixth floor. That was where we usually had meetings.
I entered and it was a full room already. I seemed to be the last to arrive except the one who called the meeting himself... Bruce Stamford.
"He is coming!" Someone said those dreaded words and we all struggled to compose ourselves.
Bruce entered and from his countenance, I could sense danger. He didn't say 'good morning' as usual. He simply glanced at us with his piercing eyes.
"Our most recent project..." He paused, looking around. Our eyes met before he looked away and continued.
"Project Fireball. We have been preparing for a long time, haven't we?"
"Yes, boss!" We all said in unison.
"This morning, I got the rudest shock of my life," Bruce continued.
"Mac Group announced their Godzilla project this morning and I believe I need an explanation as to why their announced project is exactly like ours!"
Silence. No one muttered.
"None of you is going to respond?" Bruce said calmly. His calmness was more frightening in this situation.
Then he shouted, "None of you!" I shook in fear.
The oldest manager among us stood up carefully and asked for permission to speak. Bruce simply nodded as he glanced at the old man.
"The information must have been leaked," the manager muttered. "I checked the details and it was too detailed to be a coincidence."
"How many people had access to such detailed information?" Bruce asked.
"Five people, sir," Sam, the old manager responded. "And uh... plus your secretary, that makes it six!"
Me? I was the secretary.
"It couldn't have leaked from Natasha. It has to be within the five other people. You should..."
Bruce was saying when he got a notification from his phone. He picked it up and checked. He raised his head and looked into my eyes.
"It says a man named Michael is in charge of the project at Mac Group."
"I'm sure that Michael has a connection with one of those who knew the insider information!" Sam said confidently.
"Natasha! How about you explain?" Bruce asked me. He looked like he was boiling in anger right now.
I stood up, "Explain what?"
"You are still pretending?" Bruce muttered. "Michael is your boyfriend, is that true?"
"Michael?" I pondered. "Michael!" The realization hit me hard.
"Wait," I said quickly. "Michael is my boyfriend but... he works for Mac Group but I didn't give him any information. It wasn't me..."
"Then where did he get it from?" Bruce wanted to know. Then I realized.
I took the documents home one day and that same day, Michael had come to visit me. Still, he couldn't have done that, could he?
"I can explain..." I muttered desperately.
"Do you know how much we will lose because of your betrayal?" Bruce asked, breathing hard.
"Drop the key to the company car. You are fired!" I couldn't breathe. I felt asphyxiated.
**I met Michael at a business webinar. It must have been a year ago. I escorted Bruce and while he spoke to a foreign investor, I merely looked around with a glass of champagne in hand.
That was when he appeared. Tall, lanky, well dressed, smelled nicely, and with the cutest smile.
"You're such a beauty," He told me and made me blush. "My name is Michael and it's nice to meet you. Do you shake?"
Life with him has been a rollercoaster ever since. We started dating two weeks after we met and he seemed to be the most perfect man for me.
He was so considerate, always wanted happiness for me... At times, I wondered if he was real. He was, until NOW.
"I'd like to see an employee here. His name is Michael..." I told the receptionist.
Right now, I was at Mac Group's head office where Michael worked. I had to see him to confirm if he really stole my company's ideas. It was obvious what the answer would be though.
I was quite certain that my darling Michael would never do such a thing.
But why wasn't he picking his calls? He must be so busy with work. Why did his house seem empty when I checked earlier? He must have changed houses and thought to tell me later.
"Michael what..." The receptionist muttered.
"Reynolds," I responded.
The receptionist called a number and spoke to someone on the phone. I couldn't hear.
"He doesn't wish to see you, miss," She replied politely.
"Did you tell him who I was? My name?" I asked frantically. My heart was beating harder and the whole scenario was getting out of control.
"He told me to relay these words..." She cleared her throat. "LET'S BREAK UP."
"Whattttt!"

My fiancé always told me he loved me. But not long after our engagement, I woke up suffocating in the dark.
He was pressing a pillow over my face, his eyes cold and dead, while my half-sister stood by watching with fake pity.
They had orchestrated everything just to steal my trust fund.
It all started with a massive hotel scandal. They had drugged me, thrown a cheap escort into my bed, and brought a mob of paparazzi to ruin my reputation.
When my fiancé broke through the crowd, playing the heartbroken victim, he knelt down with a massive diamond ring.
"I know things have been hard, but I love you. If you come home with me, I will forgive all of this."
In my past life, I cried tears of gratitude and let him slide that ring onto my finger.
That ring sealed my death warrant. I lost my company, my dignity, and eventually, my life.
Until my lungs burned and my heart stopped, I didn't understand.
How could the people I trusted most plot my murder so ruthlessly?
Why did they have to tear my entire life apart?
Opening my eyes again, I was back on the morning of the hotel scandal, exactly one year ago.
But the man lying bare-backed in my bed wasn't a random escort.
It was Johnathan Chase, my family's biggest corporate rival and the most ruthless predator on Wall Street.
Listening to the paparazzi pounding on the door, I smiled coldly.

My husband, Bennett, and I were New York's golden couple. But our perfect marriage was a lie, childless because of a rare genetic condition he claimed would kill any woman who carried his baby. When his dying father demanded an heir, Bennett proposed a solution: a surrogate.
The woman he chose, Aria, was a younger, more vibrant version of me. Suddenly, Bennett was always busy, supporting her through "difficult IVF cycles." He missed my birthday. He forgot our anniversary.
I tried to believe him, until I overheard him at a party. He confessed to his friends that his love for me was a "deep connection," but with Aria, it was "fire" and "exhilarating."
He was planning a secret wedding with her in Lake Como, at the same villa he'd promised me for our anniversary.
He was giving her a wedding, a family, a life—all the things he denied me, using a lie about a deadly genetic condition as his excuse. The betrayal was so complete it felt like a physical shock.
When he came home that night, lying about a business trip, I smiled and played the part of the loving wife.
He didn't know I'd heard everything.
He didn't know that while he was planning his new life, I was already planning my escape.
And he certainly didn't know I had just made a call to a service that specialized in one thing: making people disappear.

My boyfriend, Jefferson, convinced me to give up my Yale scholarship for him. He was my secret, my escape from the shame of my mother's past, and I threw away my future for our love.
Then, at a gala, he publicly announced his engagement to Aubrey Carroll-the girl who made my high school years a living hell.
He trapped me in his mansion, forcing me to become her personal servant. She tortured me daily, culminating in her brutally killing our dog, Charlie, with a garden trowel.
When her friends arrived, they joined in, stripping me half-naked and live-streaming my panic attack for the world to see.
The man who once promised to protect me watched as they destroyed me.
But as I lay bleeding out on the floor, it wasn't an ambulance that arrived. It was the private security of Alexzander Stevens-my estranged, billionaire grandfather.
He revealed I was his sole heiress, and now, we were going to make them pay for every last tear.

To keep her grandmother on life support, Aracely was blackmailed into taking Evelyn's place in the pitch-black bedroom of the ruthless billionaire, Brennen Levine.
After that night, Evelyn tossed a hideous silicone scar at her feet, forcing Aracely to glue it to her face and work as a bottom-tier maid in his estate so he would never recognize her.
Brennen, suffering from chronic insomnia, was completely addicted to the sweet gardenia scent of the woman from the dark. But when he saw the "disfigured" Aracely scrubbing floors, he was physically repulsed, publicly humiliating her and calling her a monster.
Meanwhile, Evelyn paraded around as his soon-to-be wife. Terrified of her lies unraveling, Evelyn constantly abused Aracely, throwing scalding coffee at her face and threatening to pull the plug on her grandmother if Aracely didn't sneak back into Brennen's room to act as his human sleeping pill.
Aracely endured the suffocating fake scar, the insults, and the freezing servant quarters. She ground her teeth, swallowing the bitter injustice just to keep her only family alive, wondering when this torturous hell would ever end.
But Evelyn's malice knew no bounds. When Evelyn raised her hand to strike again, threatening to rip off the very disguise she forced Aracely to wear, something inside Aracely finally snapped.
"Do not push me."
Aracely locked her hand around Evelyn's wrist in a bone-crushing grip, completely unaware that Brennen was watching from the balcony above, his dark eyes narrowing as a dangerous realization hit him.

It was her hair that fascinated him. The reddish-brown mass was parted high to one side, windswept almost. And then there was her make-up, neutral save for the liner around her eyes and the bold lip colour... was that purple?
His gaze narrowed over it and she must have sensed his attention, her eyes flickering in his direction. "You know, it's rude to stare."
Her voice was husky, a crisp edge that rasped along his spine and sealed her appeal. Derek was hooked. Her eyes were back on the doors, her lack of interest obvious.
He should've taken it as a sign, but since when had he backed off from anything he fancied?
