Chapter 2

Gabriel stared at my bare collarbone until his expression tightened into denial.

"It can fade temporarily," he said.

I almost laughed.

"No, it can't."

"Shock can suppress a mark." He sounded like a man arguing with a verdict. "You're upset. Your wolf is upset. Once you calm down, it'll return."

"You know that isn't how a fifth-year renewal works."

He looked away first. "We're not discussing this at two in the morning."

That was Gabriel's solution to anything he couldn't command into obedience: postpone it until he could rename the problem.

By breakfast, he had renamed the severed bond a marital disagreement.

He sat at the oak dining table with patrol reports spread around his coffee mug, tapping a silver pen against the paper.

"Claire, I need coffee before the border briefing," he said without looking up. "And put some eggs in a container. I'll eat in the truck."

I stood at the kitchen island pouring milk into Lily's pink cup.

Our three-year-old kicked her sneakers against the stool. "Daddy asked for coffee, Mommy."

"I heard him, sweetheart." I slid the cup toward her. "Two hands."

She obediently wrapped both hands around it.

I went back to cutting strawberries.

Gabriel's pen stopped tapping.

"Seriously?"

I placed three pieces of fruit beside Lily's toast.

"Claire."

I wiped a drop of milk from the counter.

His chair scraped back. "Are you going to punish me with silence now?"

"I'm making Lily breakfast."

"You know what I mean."

I did. Before midnight, the irritation in his voice would have tightened the bond between us until I rushed to smooth things over. Now there was only quiet space behind my ribs.

He crossed the kitchen. "I explained what happened. Ava's shift was unstable. She was clawing at her own arms. If I'd walked away and she had hurt herself, the entire pack would have blamed me."

"You said you were the Alpha and the ritual couldn't touch us."

"Because it shouldn't have." A flash of uncertainty crossed his face before pride buried it. "Whatever happened to your mark can be fixed. The elders know restoration rites."

"There are no restoration rites after the fifth-year bond closes."

"We'll see about that."

The front door opened before I could answer.

Ava appeared in the kitchen archway, pale and fragile in Gabriel's black wool coat. The sleeves covered half her hands. Her eyes were swollen from crying, and a faint red scratch marked one wrist.

"Alpha," she said softly. "Luna. I'm sorry to come so early. I wanted to return this."

She drew the coat tighter for one unnecessary second and buried her nose against the collar before taking it off.

The jasmine scent reached me from across the room.

Yesterday, another woman wearing Gabriel's coat would have set every possessive instinct in my wolf on fire. Today my wolf stayed silent, and my pulse did not change.

That frightened me more than jealousy ever had.

Gabriel moved to Ava immediately. "You should be resting."

"I didn't want to keep something that belongs here." Her gaze flicked toward me. "I know family things are important."

The statement was shaped like humility and aimed like a blade.

Gabriel missed the blade.

"You weren't keeping it. I gave it to you because you were shaking."

"You stayed until I fell asleep," she whispered. "I don't remember much, but I remember that. Thank you."

"Of course."

I saw the moment he remembered I was watching. His shoulders squared.

"Claire, her parents died defending our western border ten years ago. You know the oath I made to her father."

Ava lowered her eyes.

"You were fifteen when her father died," I said. "Your father made that oath. You repeated it after you became Alpha."

Gabriel frowned. He did not like corrections in front of witnesses.

"The point is the same. She's under Blackridge protection."

"So are hundreds of other pack members."

"They aren't having uncontrolled shifts."

Ava's fingers twisted together. "Please don't fight because of me."

"We're not fighting," Gabriel said quickly.

"No," I agreed. "We're not."

He turned on me. "What is that supposed to mean?"

I looked past him toward the framed photograph on the living room wall. Lily's first birthday. Gabriel behind me, arms around my waist, both of us smiling as if love could protect itself without effort.

That man felt distant enough to be someone I had once read about.

"Claire, say something."

"Okay."

His eyebrows pulled together. "Okay what?"

"Okay, I understand your position."

For a heartbeat, he looked relieved.

Then I took Lily's hand.

"Come on, baby. We need to get dressed."

Lily hopped off the stool. "Can I wear my fox sweater?"

"Absolutely."

I led her toward the stairs.

Behind us, Gabriel growled under his breath. "That's it?"

I kept walking.

"You're not going to say anything about last night? About the mark?"

"You already decided what you believe."

"Don't do that." His voice rose. "Don't act like I'm the villain because I helped someone. You're the Luna. You're supposed to care about the people in this territory."

I paused on the third stair and looked down at him.

"Caring about the pack and sacrificing our bond were not the same choice. You made them the same because it was easier for you."

Ava sucked in a quiet breath.

Gabriel's face hardened.

"Fine," he snapped. "If you think I handled her crisis badly, I'll make sure it doesn't happen again."

He turned to Ava.

"Your shifting is too unstable to monitor from the south cottages. Move into the guest room here until Dr. Ethan clears you."

Ava's mouth fell open. "Alpha, I couldn't. The Luna—"

"This is my house too."

Too.

Not ours.

He marched to the entry table and reached into the ceramic bowl where we kept the spare keys.

The metal rang against the glaze.

He pulled out a silver key and dropped it into Ava's open palm.

She stared at it as if he'd handed her a crown.

I felt Lily squeeze my fingers.

"Mommy?"

"I'm here."

I guided her up the stairs without looking back.

Behind me, the front-door key chimed softly as Ava closed her fist around it.
