Chapter 3

Three days after Gabriel gave Ava a key to our home, Dr. Ethan Cole found me sitting on a blanket in the backyard with Lily.

"Look, Mommy." Lily stacked a red block on top of two yellow ones. "It's a castle."

"Then every castle needs a strong foundation." I steadied the bottom block while she added another.

Above us, the second-floor balcony door slid open.

"Careful, the tea's hot," Gabriel said.

"Thank you, Alpha," Ava answered.

I didn't look up.

Ethan came through the side gate carrying his medical bag. He had served as Blackridge's physician before Gabriel named him Beta, and he refused to give up either job. Most mornings he wore a suit over scrubs. Today was no exception.

"There she is," he said to Lily. "My least cooperative patient."

Lily grinned. "I don't like cold listening."

"The stethoscope has apologized for its behavior."

She giggled and allowed him to listen to her heart. He checked her ears, asked about her sleep, and declared her fit for preschool.

"I need your signature on the clearance form," he told me.

I stood and brushed damp soil from my jeans.

Ethan handed me the clipboard.

Then he froze.

His nostrils flared once.

His eyes went straight to my neck.

"Lily," he said carefully, "can you build me a taller tower? I want one higher than your knee."

"Okay!"

He caught my elbow and moved me several yards away.

"Where is Gabriel's scent?"

"Gone."

Ethan's face changed. "Claire."

I pulled my collar aside just enough for him to see smooth skin.

He swore under his breath.

"When?"

"The renewal night. Midnight."

"And he doesn't know?"

"He saw the missing mark. He decided it's temporary."

Ethan stared at me as if he couldn't decide which fact was more alarming. "A severed fifth-year bond can cause cardiac shock, loss of wolf control, temporary dissociation—"

"I know."

"Do you? Because you're standing in a yard pretending this is normal."

"Lily is three feet away. Lower your voice."

He obeyed, but his anger didn't fade. "Your pack-link is gone with the mate bond. I can barely detect your Blackridge signature. If the council realizes it before the registry is updated, they'll panic."

"Will they panic for me or for Gabriel?"

Ethan's silence answered.

I handed back Lily's form. "I need two things."

"You need an ECG and bloodwork."

"After you get me the things."

His jaw tightened. "What?"

"A copy of the pack-registry withdrawal form and the contact information for the family attorney in Silver Pine. Not a pack attorney. Someone independent."

"You're leaving him."

"Yes."

The word felt clean.

Ethan looked toward the balcony. Gabriel laughed at something Ava said.

"Claire, if you withdraw from the pack before joining another one, you'll lose Luna protection."

"I lost that three nights ago."

"And Lily?"

"I'm taking her with me."

"Gabriel will fight you."

"Then he can explain to a civil court why the Alpha residence has become a crisis ward for a woman whose behavior he refuses to document."

Ethan rubbed a hand over his face. "You planned this fast."

"No. I admitted it fast. There is a difference."

He studied me, then walked to his SUV and returned with a plain envelope.

"Blank withdrawal form," he said. "And the attorney's card. I keep both for wolves who need to leave safely."

I tucked the envelope into my jacket.

"Thank you."

Ethan caught my wrist before I could turn away. "Sit down for five minutes. If you're going to ignore my medical advice, at least let me make sure you can safely drive tomorrow."

I wanted to refuse, but Lily was watching us from the blanket. I sat on the garden bench while he checked my pulse, blood pressure, pupils, and the healing skin where the mark had vanished. His expression grew more serious with every measurement.

"Your heart rate is normal. That's the good news," he said. "The bad news is your wolf is suppressing almost everything. You may feel calm because your nervous system is protecting you. Don't mistake numbness for strength. If you get dizzy, feverish, or lose time, call me immediately."

"I'm not planning to fall apart."

"Bodies don't care about plans." He packed away the cuff. "And Claire? Once you cross the boundary, Gabriel's Alpha command shouldn't reach you. Your Luna link died with the mate bond. Legally you're still Blackridge until the registry is changed, but magically you're already outside his chain of command."

That mattered more than I wanted him to know.

"Good," I said.

"I haven't agreed to help you disappear."

"Not yet."

That evening, workers were rearranging tables in the packhouse grand hall. Gabriel stood by the stone fireplace holding a guest list.

"Move the head table closer to the windows," he ordered. "The council wants sightlines to the courtyard. And call the florist. White roses."

I crossed the hall carrying Lily's preschool packet.

"Gabriel, I need your signature."

He barely glanced at the folder. "For what?"

"Preschool enrollment. The deadline is tomorrow."

"Tomorrow? I'm in council meetings all morning."

"It takes one signature."

He finally looked at me. "Ava completed a controlled shift today. We're holding a formal banquet Friday to recognize her recovery and the healers who helped her. I need you to coordinate the household staff."

"No."

His expression went blank. "What?"

"I'm not planning a banquet for Ava. Sign Lily's form."

"Claire, this event matters politically. The northern elders are attending."

"Our daughter's school placement matters to our daughter."

"She's three. Another semester won't ruin her life."

I held the pen out. "Sign it."

"Stop making everything a contest between Lily and Ava."

"I'm not. You are."

Two enforcers moving chairs slowed down.

Gabriel noticed them watching and lowered his voice. "You are the Luna. Friday night you will stand beside me, welcome our guests, and make it clear that this household is united."

"It isn't."

His eyes flashed gold. "Don't test me."

"I already said no."

He reached for my arm.

A polished black shoe stepped between us.

Ethan moved in front of me before Gabriel's hand could close around my wrist.

The hall went silent.

Gabriel's face darkened. "Move, Beta."

Ethan didn't.

"The Luna said no," he said.

Every worker in the room stopped breathing.

And for the first time since midnight, someone had challenged Gabriel's authority before I had to stand alone.
