My Husband Ruined My Life, So I Became the Star He Could Never Reach Chapter 1

The pain cut through my abdomen like a dull blade, tearing into raw flesh with every shallow breath.

I lay flat on the narrow hospital mattress, cold sweat soaking my hairline and sticking my gown to my skin. My fingers dug into the rough cotton sheets, knuckles white and trembling. The anesthesia had worn off an hour ago, leaving behind a deep, throbbing ache that radiated through my pelvis. Every tiny expansion of my chest pulled at the surgical sutures inside me.

The doctor’s words from earlier were still ringing in my ears.

*I'm so sorry, Mrs. Laurent. The trauma from the impact was too severe. We couldn't save your baby.*

Nine months. I had carried my daughter for nine months, feeling her tiny kicks against my ribs, painting her nursery pale yellow, counting down the days until I could hold her in my arms.

And then came the second blow, delivered with the doctor’s regretful gaze.

*The uterine rupture caused extensive internal scarring. The odds of you carrying another pregnancy in the future are nearly nonexistent.*

My daughter was gone. My body was broken.

I squeezed my eyes shut, biting the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper, fighting to keep the sobs trapped in my throat. I didn't want the nurses to pity me. I didn't want anyone to see how utterly shattered I was.

Then, through the heavy silence of the private suite, a familiar voice drifted in from the cracked doorway.

"Relax. She won't be going back to the entertainment industry."

It was Ethan. My husband.

My breath caught in my throat. I stayed perfectly still, the monitor beside my bed beeping in a steady, monotonous rhythm.

The woman on the other end of the line must have asked something, because Ethan let out a soft, dismissive chuckle.

"The baby didn't make it," he said, his tone as casual as if he were discussing a canceled business lunch. "And her body is ruined. The doctor said she'll never carry again. That means she has no choice but to stay home and behave. She won't be around to take your roles or steal your spotlight anymore."

A cold numbness spread outward from my chest, freezing the blood in my veins.

Steal whose spotlight? Who was he talking to?

I opened my eyes, staring at the sterile white ceiling tiles above me. My mind scrambled to connect the pieces, but before I could make sense of it, Ethan spoke again.

"The crash was set up cleanly," he said quietly, stepping slightly farther down the corridor. "She thinks a reckless driver ran the red light. She’ll never know we arranged the whole thing. Even if she wakes up and suspects something feels off, there isn't a single shred of evidence."

The words hung in the air like poison.

The blinding headlights that had smashed into the passenger side of my town car. The crushing impact of metal. The frantic sirens.

It hadn't been a freak accident.

It had been planned.

My husband had orchestrated the collision that killed our daughter and gutted my future. And the "we" he spoke of—the woman on the line—was someone else I had welcomed into my life, someone I had trusted.

Suddenly, the physical agony in my gut disappeared, swallowed whole by a terrifying, hollow stillness.

I stared unblinkingly at the fluorescent lights above me.

Five years ago, before I met Ethan, my name had meant something entirely different. At twenty-two, I was Aurora Laurent, the most sought-after young talent in the industry. My debut feature film had earned me a best actress nomination at an international festival. Renowned directors lined up to pitch me their passion projects. Luxury brands and television networks booked my calendar two years in advance.

Every critic and producer in the business said I was destined to become a global star.

Then Ethan walked into my life with his gentle smiles, his attentive gestures, and his promises of a quiet, beautiful future together.

I fell for all of it.

To spend more time with him, I turned down multi-picture franchise deals. To marry him without media frenzy, I walked away from a prestigious overseas production. And when we decided to start a family, I held a press conference and announced an indefinite hiatus from acting, giving up the career I had bled for since I was a teenager.

I told myself that fame was fleeting, but love was real. I convinced myself that standing beside Ethan and raising our child was worth leaving the red carpets and the applause behind. I truly believed he cherished the sacrifices I made for our home.

And this was my reward.

I lay in a cold hospital room, stripped of my daughter, stripped of my ability to ever become a mother again, while my husband stood outside the door boasting about how thoroughly he had ruined me.

A single tear escaped my lashes, sliding down my temple and soaking silently into the pillow.

I didn't make a sound. I didn't reach for the emergency call button. I didn't scream his name.

Crying was useless against monsters.

They thought they had reduced me to a helpless invalid who would spend the rest of her life trapped in an empty house, mourning a phantom life and relying on Ethan's false comfort. They thought taking away my child and my health would break my spirit entirely.

They forgot who I was before I gave everything up for a lie.

I had walked away from the spotlight once for the man I loved. But I would never let anyone tear down what was left of my life ever again.
