Chapter 3

The morning after I met Maverick in the clearing, Margo appeared at the Duskridge common grounds wearing Kellan's ceremonial Alpha cloak.

I saw her from across the square. The cloak was unmistakable — deep charcoal wool with the Duskridge crest embroidered in silver thread across the back, the hem brushing the tops of her boots. It was a privilege reserved exclusively for the Luna. I'd worn it exactly twice in three years, both times at formal pack ceremonies where tradition demanded it.

She'd positioned herself near the central fountain where the pack's morning gathering always formed. Deliberate. She wanted to be seen.

I was crossing the grounds with a stack of diplomatic files, heading toward the archive room to pull the original alliance contracts I'd negotiated two years ago. I needed the authenticated seals — the ones bearing my Luna authority before Kellan had started forging my signature.

Several pack members who used to greet me with 'Good morning, Luna' now dipped their heads toward Margo instead. The shift was automatic, reflexive. Wolves reorienting to a new hierarchy.

Gamma Drake Voss stood at Margo's side, arms crossed, smirking openly in my direction.

I met Margo's gaze for exactly two seconds.

Long enough to make clear I was not flinching. Not looking away. Not performing the shame she expected.

Then I kept walking.

My wolf stirred faintly. Not howling. Not collapsing. Just present, watching through my eyes with a cold, patient awareness that hadn't been there before the clearing.

I pulled out the small notebook I'd started carrying and made a note: *Margo wearing ceremonial Alpha cloak. Common grounds. 8:47 a.m. Voss present.*

Everything was evidence.

---

The archive room was locked.

Two junior warriors stood in front of the door, arms crossed in a mirror of Voss's stance. I recognized them — Cade and Brennan, both promoted to Delta rank within the last year. I'd signed off on Cade's warrior certification myself after he'd recovered from a training injury that should have ended his career.

He wouldn't look at me now.

"Archive's restricted," Brennan said. His voice was flat, rehearsed.

"By whose order?" I asked.

"Gamma Voss," Cade said, still staring at the wall behind my shoulder. "Your Luna credentials aren't valid anymore."

I didn't argue.

I pulled out my phone, took a photograph of the blocked door and the two warriors standing guard, and noted the time in my notebook. Then I turned and walked toward the pack boundary.

Behind me, I heard Brennan exhale like he'd been holding his breath.

---

The boundary line ran along the eastern ridge, marked by old stone cairns that had stood since before Kellan's grandfather held the Alpha title. I reached it just as the sun was setting, the sky bleeding orange and purple across the horizon.

I stood at the territorial line and felt the pack bond humming faintly beneath my ribs — not the mate bond, which was dead and cold, but the broader connection that linked every Duskridge wolf to the land and to each other.

I'd severed the mate bond three nights ago when Kellan spoke the rejection. But the Luna bond was separate. Older. It required a formal severance, spoken aloud at the boundary, witnessed by the land itself.

I took a breath.

"I, Regina Lawson, Luna of Duskridge, sever my bond to this pack and this territory." My voice carried across the empty ridge. "I release my claim. I release my authority. I release my oath."

The bond snapped.

It didn't hurt. It was more like a rope going slack, the tension I'd been holding for three years suddenly gone. A disorienting lightness moved through my chest, and for a moment I felt untethered, like I might drift away if I didn't concentrate on staying rooted.

Then the lightness settled.

And something else activated.

I felt it like a lock turning over — distant, legal, bureaucratic. The Luna Accord. The ancient pack-law provision Kellan had never bothered to read. The one that stated clearly: *A Luna who severs her bond due to wrongful rejection retains legal authority over all alliances, agreements, and diplomatic bonds established during her tenure, pending tribunal resolution.*

Every alliance I'd brokered. Every trade route I'd negotiated. Every warrior-training contract I'd signed. All of it legally reverted to my authority the moment I spoke the severance.

I'd filed the Accord activation to the Lycan Council's administrative office two hours ago, timestamped and authenticated.

Kellan's alliance network was about to collapse.

I walked back from the boundary with my phone already lighting up with automated confirmation notices.

---

By morning, the chaos had started.

I didn't go to the pack house. I didn't need to. The messages came through on the encrypted network I'd built for diplomatic coordination — the one Kellan didn't know existed because he'd never asked how I managed his alliances.

Pack partners who'd traded with Duskridge because of my personal relationships were receiving formal notices. Their agreements were void pending the Luna Accord's resolution. Trade caravans were rerouting. Warrior-training delegations were sending withdrawal notices.

One message came from an Alpha I'd worked with for two years: *Regina, what the hell is happening? Kellan's Beta says the agreements are invalid, but your seal is on every contract. Who do I answer to?*

I replied: *The Luna Accord is in effect. All agreements revert to my authority pending tribunal. I'll contact you within forty-eight hours with updated terms.*

I sent similar messages to six other Alphas.

Then I waited.

---

Maverick's file arrived at noon.

No preamble. Just a subject line: *Margo Gomez — Dossier One.*

I opened it.

Confirmation of scent suppressant use. A pattern of resource extraction across at least two previous Alpha marks. And the first traceable thread connecting her to an underground rogue syndicate blood-debt.

There was a note at the bottom: *She's running the same con on an Alpha in the Thornwall Pack simultaneously. His resources are nearly dry. When they are, she will need Kellan's to accelerate.*

I read it twice.

Then I added it to my tribunal evidence file and sent back a single line: *How long before she realizes Kellan's reserves are already compromised?*

His response came within minutes: *Weeks. Maybe less.*

I set my phone down and looked out the window.

Across the grounds, I could see the pack house. Lights were on in the Alpha's office. I imagined Kellan in there, staring at withdrawal notices he didn't understand, demanding explanations his Beta couldn't give.

Margo would be watching.

And when she realized the well was running dry, she would accelerate.

I picked up my notebook and made another entry.

Then I started drafting my formal tribunal petition.
