Chapter 4

I woke to the smell of blood.

Not fresh. Not threatening. The clean, mineral scent of a kill that had been dressed properly, the way a wolf who knew what he was doing would prepare meat for someone who mattered.

I sat up in the narrow bed of the temporary den Silvercrest had provided at their border settlement. The room was small, functional, nothing like the Luna's quarters I'd left behind at Duskridge. A single window. A door that locked from the inside. Enough.

The scent was coming from outside.

I pulled on clothes and opened the door.

A massive stag lay on the ground three feet from my threshold. It had been cleaned and dressed with precision — no wasted meat, no careless cuts. The kind of work that took time and skill. The kind of offering that wasn't about showing off but about providing.

There was no note.

I stood in the doorway and stared at it. My hand rose toward my throat before I realized what I was doing. My fingers brushed the dead mark, cold and numb beneath my touch. I forced my hand back down and curled it into a fist at my side.

Maverick.

He hadn't announced it. Hadn't asked for acknowledgment or thanks. He'd simply left the largest kill from last night's pack hunt at my door and disappeared.

My wolf stirred faintly. Not the collapsed, hollow silence of the rejection. Something else. A flicker of awareness, like she was testing whether it was safe to move again.

I looked at the stag for a long moment.

Then I dragged it inside, closed the door, and started cutting the meat myself.

---

That night, I shifted.

It hurt.

My wolf came sluggishly, reluctantly, like she was moving through deep water. The transformation that used to take seconds stretched into minutes. My bones reshaped with a grinding ache I'd never felt before. When I finally stood on four legs, my body felt wrong — unbalanced, weakened, like I was wearing someone else's skin.

I shook myself and started running.

The border settlement was small. I circled it once, testing my legs, feeling the way my muscles responded. Everything was slower. Duller. The rejection had damaged more than just the bond.

I picked up speed and headed toward the perimeter.

That's when I felt him.

Another presence, running parallel to mine in the darkness beyond the settlement boundary. Massive. Silent. Keeping perfect pace.

I knew the scent before I turned my head.

Dark cedar and winter storm.

Maverick was running beside me, separated by the boundary line. He didn't cross into the settlement. Didn't approach. He simply matched my pace, stride for stride, a shadow moving through the treeline.

My wolf's ears flicked toward him. She wanted to turn. Wanted to close the distance. I forced her forward, kept running, ignored the pull.

He stayed with me for the entire circuit.

When I finally turned back toward my den, exhausted and aching, I glanced over my shoulder once.

He was gone.

My wolf made a sound low in her throat. Not quite a whimper. Almost.

I shifted back inside the den and sat on the floor with my knees pulled to my chest, waiting for my hands to stop shaking.

---

Drake Voss arrived the next afternoon.

I was sitting outside the den with my evidence files spread across a small table, cross-referencing alliance contracts against the Luna Accord provisions, when I caught his scent approaching from the Duskridge side of the border.

He wasn't alone. Two Delta warriors flanked him, both armed. A formal delegation.

I didn't stand.

Voss stopped ten feet away. His face was set in grim satisfaction, like he'd been waiting for this moment.

"Regina Lawson," he said, his voice carrying the full weight of his Gamma authority. "By order of Alpha Kellan Lawson of the Duskridge Pack, you are commanded to return to the pack house immediately and rescind your invocation of the Luna Accord. Failure to comply will result in your formal declaration as a rogue."

His Alpha tone hit me like a wave.

I felt it land — the compulsion, the pressure, the biological command that should have driven me to my knees. It pressed against my chest, my throat, my instincts.

And then it slid off.

Not because I resisted it. Not because I fought it. It simply didn't take. Like my body had stopped recognizing Kellan's authority as something that applied to me.

Voss's eyes narrowed. He'd felt it too — the command failing, the power dissipating into nothing.

I looked up at him.

"Kellan is welcome to bring that declaration to the Lycan Council tribunal," I said quietly. "Where I have already filed my evidence. Along with witness testimony. And authenticated contract seals."

I paused.

"And now," I continued, "a formal charge for the unlawful use of Alpha-tone compulsion against a severed former Luna. Which you just delivered. In front of witnesses."

I gestured toward the two Deltas flanking him. Both of them had gone very still.

"Thank you for that," I said.

Voss's jaw tightened. His hand twitched toward his belt, where I knew he carried a blade. But he didn't draw it. He was a Gamma. He understood pack law well enough to know that physical violence against a former Luna during a tribunal proceeding would end his career.

He turned and walked away without another word. The two Deltas followed.

I waited until they were out of sight.

Then I picked up my pen and added a new entry to my evidence log, noting the time, the witnesses, and the exact wording of Voss's command.

My hand was shaking.

I pressed it flat against the table and held it there until it stopped.

Then I went back to work.
