Left At The Altar, Now I Burn His Empire Chapter 1

"He is forty minutes late, Evelyn."

My fingers clamped around the edge of the velvet vanity chair. The heavy silk of my custom gown pressed tightly against my ribs.

"Traffic," I said, keeping my gaze fixed on the mirror. "The FDR Drive is always backed up on Saturday afternoons."

"He has a police escort," my maid of honor, Sarah, pointed out.

I checked my phone screen again. Blank. Not a single text from Kael Mercer, CEO of Mercer Enterprises, the man I had loved fiercely for three years.

"Go out there," I told her. "Tell the string quartet to play another loop of Pachelbel."

Sarah gave a tight nod and slipped out the side door.

The church vestibule fell utterly silent. Beyond the heavy oak doors, five hundred of New York's elite shifted in the pews. I stepped closer to the wood, pressing my ear against the polished surface. The murmurs bled through the cracks.

"Did you hear? Mercer's jet took off from JFK twenty minutes ago."

"Left her at the altar. Poor girl."

"She’s just a nobody anyway. A charity case. The gold digger got exactly what she deserved."

My jaw locked tight. They thought I was nobody. Just a regular girl from a middle-class neighborhood who got lucky when a billionaire CEO fell in love with her. They didn't know the Kensington family owned half the commercial real estate under their feet. My father could buy this cathedral and turn it into a parking lot before sunset.

The vestibule door swung open, hitting the wall with a loud bang.

"Clear the room."

The booming voice belonged to my father, Dominic Kensington.

The wedding planner, who had just rushed in with a clipboard, dropped her pen and scurried away.

My father slammed the door shut behind her. His face was a rigid mask of cold fury. He wore a bespoke tuxedo that cost more than Kael’s entire wedding budget, but right now, he looked ready for a war.

"He is gone, Evelyn."

"We don't know that for sure."

"My security team tracked his motorcade." He stepped closer, towering over me. "He bypassed the church. He went straight to the airport and boarded a private flight to Paris."

A sharp pain flared in my chest. "Paris?"

"He humiliated you. He humiliated this family." My father reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone. "I am going to crush him."

I snatched the device from his hand.

"Give that back."

"Dad, stop. Don't do this."

"He left you standing in a white dress while he flew across the Atlantic!" My father’s voice shook the stained glass windows above us. "Mercer Enterprises relies entirely on our overseas supply chains. I will cut them off by midnight. I will leak the embezzlement files from his CFO to the feds. He will be bankrupt by Monday morning."

"No!"

My father froze. His eyes narrowed, studying me like a stranger.

"You are a Kensington," he growled. "Act like one."

"I love him."

"He abandoned you!"

"It might be a work emergency." I gripped the phone tighter, my knuckles turning white. "A hostile takeover. You know how volatile the European markets are right now."

"A work emergency?" My father let out a harsh, barking laugh. "Are you listening to yourself?"

"I'm not letting you destroy his life over a misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding. Evelyn, the entire city is laughing at you right now. The press is already outside."

I shoved the phone back against his chest. "Let them laugh. I don't care about them. I care about Kael."

"He doesn't care about you."

"You don't know him."

"I know men who run from their responsibilities." My father pocketed the phone, his expression hardening into stone. "I gave you three years to play this little game. You wanted to hide your identity. You wanted to be a normal girl and find true love. Look where it got you."

"He will call me."

"He won't."

"He loves me, Dad. I know he does."

My father sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. The anger drained out of him, replaced by a heavy, suffocating pity. That was worse. I could fight his rage. I couldn't fight his pity.

"I am going out there to announce the wedding is canceled," he said softly.

"Tell them it's postponed."

"Evelyn—"

"Postponed. Please."

He stared at me for a long moment. "You have three days. If Kael Mercer doesn't crawl back here and beg for your forgiveness by Tuesday, I will erase him from Wall Street. And you will not stop me."

He turned on his heel and walked out, leaving me alone in the quiet room.

The silence pressed in on me from all sides. I looked down at my hands. The diamond engagement ring sparkled under the chandelier lights. Three years of late-night takeout, stolen kisses in elevator cabs, and whispered promises in the dark. He wouldn't just throw it away. He wouldn't leave me without a reason.

The heavy doors opened again. Sarah slipped back inside, her face pale.

"The guests are leaving," she whispered.

"I know."

"Evie, there are reporters swarming the front steps. We need to get you out the back alley."

I reached up and pulled the veil from my hair, letting it drop to the floor. "Bring the car around."

"Where do you want to go? Your father's estate?"

"No. Kael's penthouse."

Sarah blinked. "Why?"

"Because he left something behind. Or someone knows something." I gathered the heavy skirts of my dress. "I am going to find out exactly why my fiancé fled the country."

We hurried through the narrow corridors of the church, avoiding the main hall. The sounds of camera shutters echoed from the street, but we managed to slip into the waiting SUV unnoticed.

The ride to the penthouse was a blur of city lights and suffocating tension. I stared out the tinted window, replaying every conversation Kael and I had over the last week. He had been distracted. Checking his phone late at night. Taking calls in the other room.

I thought it was just wedding jitters. Or a big merger.

The SUV pulled up to the luxury high-rise. I didn't wait for the driver to open my door. I pushed it open and marched past the doorman, who stared at my wedding dress with wide eyes.

Sarah chased after me into the lobby. "Wait up! You shouldn't do this alone."

"I'm fine," I snapped, hitting the elevator button.

"You're in shock."

"I'm looking for answers."

The private elevator took us straight to the top floor. The doors slid open to reveal the dark, empty penthouse.

I stepped inside, flicking on the lights. Everything was perfectly in place. His scotch glasses on the bar. The stack of financial magazines on the coffee table.

"Kael?" I called out, even though I knew he wasn't there.

My voice echoed in the cavernous space.

Sarah lingered near the entrance. "I'll check the study."

I walked straight into the master bedroom. The bed was made. His closet doors were shut. I pulled them open.

His suits were still hanging in perfect rows. But his travel duffel was gone. And the safe in the back of the closet was standing wide open.

I dropped to my knees, peering into the empty steel box. The emergency cash was gone. His passports were gone.

But there was one thing left behind.

A single, folded piece of paper resting on the bottom shelf.

I reached for it, my fingers trembling slightly. I unfolded the crisp white sheet.

It wasn't a letter from Kael.

It was a printed photograph.

I stared at the image, my stomach dropping. The edges of my vision blurred.

It was Kael. In Paris. But he wasn't in a boardroom.

He was standing on a balcony, wrapped in the arms of a stunning blonde woman. Her hands were tangled in his hair, and his lips were pressed fiercely against hers.

I flipped the photo over.

A single line of text was scrawled in red ink across the back.

*He belongs to me now.*
