Rejected Luna Took Down Her Alpha Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly nine forty-seven on the night of our renewal ceremony.

I felt it the moment Kellan's mouth opened. The great hall was packed — every ranked wolf, every warrior, every family that had sworn loyalty to Duskridge for three generations. Candles lined the dais. The ceremonial incense made the air thick and sweet. I stood beside my mate in the Luna's formal dress, white silk with gold embroidery at the cuffs, and I noticed Margo Gomez in the front row wearing a gown the exact shade of ceremonial gold reserved for ranked wolves.

That was my first warning.

Kellan wouldn't look at me. His jaw was tight. His shoulders were squared in that way he did when he was about to say something he'd already decided was right.

"I, Kellan Lawson, Alpha of Duskridge," he said, his voice carrying through the hall with perfect Alpha resonance, "reject you, Regina, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Not painful. Not yet. Just cold, like someone had pressed ice directly against the scar. Then the cold spread — down my collarbone, across my chest, into the hollow of my throat where I could feel my pulse stuttering.

My wolf collapsed.

She didn't whimper. She didn't howl. She just folded inward, like something vital had been cut, and the absence of her was so sudden and so complete that I staggered half a step before I caught myself.

The pack link shuddered. I felt it ripple outward from the dais — shock, confusion, a few wolves gasping aloud. Rejections happened, but not like this. Not at a renewal ceremony. Not in front of the entire pack with the incense still burning and the ceremonial vows half-finished.

Kellan turned away from me.

He walked three steps to the edge of the dais and held out his hand. Margo rose from the front row, her face carefully composed in something that might have been surprise if you didn't look too closely. She took his hand. He pulled her up onto the dais beside him and draped his arm around her shoulders.

"Margo Gomez will be the new Luna of Duskridge," Kellan said.

The hall erupted.

Voices overlapped — questions, protests, a few cheers from wolves I didn't recognize. The Beta, Owen Briggs, stood frozen three feet to my left, his mouth half-open like he'd forgotten how to close it. The Gamma, Drake Voss, was already moving toward the dais, his face set in grim approval.

I stood exactly where I was.

The cold in my mark was spreading. My wolf wasn't answering when I reached for her. The place where she should have been felt hollow, like an empty room with the door still swinging open. My hands were steady. I made sure of that. I folded them in front of me, fingertips pressed together, and I did not let them shake.

Kellan started down the dais steps with Margo on his arm.

She stumbled.

It was a small thing — her heel catching on the edge of the bottom step, her hand flying out for balance. Kellan caught her instantly. He turned toward her, his body angling to shield her, one hand steadying her elbow and the other bracing her back.

He didn't look at me.

His mate — his rejected mate, standing six feet away with a dead bond burning cold in her throat — and he turned toward the unmarked she-wolf he'd just declared Luna.

I felt something crack inside my chest. Not my heart. Something deeper. The part of me that had spent three years holding this pack together, brokering alliances Kellan never even knew were fracturing, healing warriors he never thanked me for saving.

That part cracked, and what came through the gap was very, very clear.

I turned to Owen. He was still staring at Kellan and Margo like he was watching a building collapse in slow motion.

"Beta Briggs," I said.

My voice came out quiet. Measured. It didn't shake.

Owen's head snapped toward me.

"You will formally witness and record," I said, "that Alpha Kellan Lawson prioritized an unmarked she-wolf over his bonded Luna in the presence of the assembled pack."

Owen's jaw tightened. His eyes flicked to Kellan's back, then back to me.

"Write it down," I said.

He pulled the small record-tablet from his belt. His fingers moved across the screen. When he looked up, his face was unreadable, but he nodded once.

"Recorded," he said quietly.

I turned toward the hall's side exit.

The crowd parted. No one spoke to me. A few wolves dropped their eyes when I passed. One older she-wolf, a healer I'd worked beside for two years, reached out like she wanted to touch my arm, then pulled her hand back.

I walked the length of the hall with my spine straight and my chin level. The dead mark was ice against my throat. My wolf was silent. My aura — the warm, steady presence I'd maintained as Luna for three years — felt like it was cracking along invisible fault lines, pieces of it falling away with every step.

I reached the door. I pushed it open.

I did not look back.

Behind me, Kellan's voice rose above the crowd, saying something about new beginnings and the pack's future. Margo laughed, light and musical.

I stepped into the corridor and let the door swing shut.

The cold in my mark spread all the way down my left arm. I pressed my fingers against it — just once, just to confirm — and felt nothing but scar tissue and ice.

I forced my hand back down.

Then I walked toward the pack house's secondary quarters, where I would not sleep, and began building my case.
