I stood at the edge of the Silvercrest Pack's moonlit courtyard, a flute of champagne untouched in my hand. The Grand Harvest Gala was in full swing, with string lights twinkling overhead and the scent of autumn flowers perfuming the air. Five years of playing the perfect Luna had taught me to maintain my composure regardless of the circumstances, and tonight would test those skills to their limits. My gaze drifted to the center of the courtyard where Marcus stood, tall and imposing in his tailored black suit. For anyone watching, he was the picture of Alpha strength and authority. Only I knew the hollowness behind that facade. "Attention, my pack," Marcus's voice boomed across the courtyard, silencing the chatter and music. His arm snaked possessively around Victoria's waist, pulling her close against his side. Her crimson dress clung to her curves, a stark contrast to my understated silver gown. "Tonight we celebrate another bountiful harvest," he continued, raising his glass.

Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King Chapter 1

The pack council meeting had been routine until the doors burst open.

I felt it before I saw him—a shift in the air that made my wolf stir restlessly beneath my skin for the first time in months. The scent hit me next, wild and magnetic, cutting through the familiar musk of our pack like lightning through storm clouds. My pen froze mid-sentence over the meeting notes as every nerve in my body suddenly came alive.

Harrison Miller stood in the doorway.

But this wasn't the reckless troublemaker who'd left our pack three years ago with nothing but bitter words and broken promises. This man commanded the room without saying a word, his presence radiating an Alpha authority that made even Calvin's most seasoned warriors shift uncomfortably in their seats. Gone was the lanky Beta who'd always lived in his older brother's shadow. In his place stood someone who looked like he'd been forged in fire and tempered by violence.

"Harrison." Calvin's voice carried surprise and wariness in equal measure. "You're back."

My mate's half-brother stepped into the room with predatory grace, his dark eyes scanning the assembled pack members before settling on Calvin. "Brother." The single word held no warmth, only acknowledgment. "I've come to formally announce my new position. I'm Alpha of the Bloodstone Pack now."

The silence that followed was deafening. I could hear my own heartbeat thundering in my ears as my wolf pressed against my consciousness, demanding attention I'd never given her before. What was wrong with me? I'd been perfectly content with Calvin, perfectly settled in my role as Luna. So why did every instinct I possessed suddenly feel like it was screaming?

"Bloodstone?" Beta Marcus leaned forward, his weathered face creased with concern. "That's rogue territory."

"Was rogue territory." Harrison's smile was sharp as a blade. "I unified the scattered packs. Brought order to chaos. The Moon Goddess rewards those who prove themselves worthy."

His gaze found mine across the room, and the world tilted on its axis. Those dark eyes held secrets and promises and something that made my breath catch in my throat. I gripped my pen so tightly I heard the plastic crack.

"Congratulations," Calvin said carefully, though I could sense the tension radiating from him through our mate bond. "What brings you to Moonridge?"

"Pack business. Territory discussions. The usual diplomatic necessities." Harrison's tone was casual, but his eyes never left mine. "I'll be staying for a few days."

I forced myself to look down at my notes, to focus on anything other than the way his presence seemed to fill every corner of the room. But I could still feel him watching me, could still smell that intoxicating scent that made my wolf pace restlessly.

The meeting continued around me, but I absorbed none of it. Every cell in my body was hyperaware of Harrison's location, of the way he moved when he shifted in his chair, of the low rumble of his voice when he spoke. This was wrong. I was mated to Calvin. I loved Calvin. We'd built a good life together, a peaceful life.

So why did I feel like I was waking up from a two-year sleep?

When the meeting finally ended, I gathered my papers with shaking hands, desperate to escape before I did something I'd regret. But as the room emptied, I felt rather than saw Harrison approach.

"Luna Paige." His voice was different now, lower, more intimate. "You look well."

I forced myself to meet his gaze, calling on every ounce of Luna training I possessed. "Alpha Harrison. Welcome back to Moonridge."

The formal words felt like ash in my mouth. Up close, I could see the scars that hadn't been there before—thin white lines along his jaw, a deeper mark disappearing beneath his collar. Evidence of the battles he'd fought, the prices he'd paid to become the man standing before me.

"Still writing those romance novels?" he asked, and something in his tone made my cheeks burn.

"Yes." The word came out breathier than I intended.

"Good." His smile was dangerous. "I always wondered if you'd ever experience the kind of passion you wrote about."

Before I could respond, Calvin appeared at my side, his hand settling possessively on my lower back. "Harrison. I trust you'll be comfortable in the guest quarters."

"Of course." Harrison's gaze flicked between us, and I saw something flicker in his expression—hunger, frustration, determination. "Thank you for your hospitality, brother."

He left without another word, but his scent lingered, wrapping around me like a promise I didn't understand. Calvin guided me from the room, his touch gentle but firm, and I let him lead me away from whatever dangerous precipice I'd been standing on.

But as we walked, my wolf whined softly in the back of my mind, mourning something I couldn't name.
