The evening breeze carried the scent of pine and wildflowers through the Silver Moon Pack's grand gathering hall. I smoothed down the silver silk dress that Alexander had insisted I wear for tonight's celebration—a rare gesture that had momentarily rekindled a flicker of hope within me. Ten years as Luna to Alpha Alexander Sterling had taught me to cherish these small moments of consideration. "You look beautiful tonight, Luna Melissa," whispered Elara, our pack healer, as she passed by with a tray of ceremonial wine. I offered her a gentle smile, though we both knew the compliment was merely a kindness. The years of Alexander's infidelities had hollowed something inside me, leaving shadows beneath my eyes that no amount of preparation could conceal. Still, I held my head high as befitting the Luna of the prestigious Silver Moon Pack. Alexander stood across the room, his powerful frame commanding attention as he addressed the gathered wolves. His voice carried that natural Alpha timbre that had once made my heart race. Now, I simply watched him perform his duties, wondering which of the she-wolves in attendance might become his ninety-ninth or hundredth chosen mate.

Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King Chapter 1

"The Silver Moon Pack welcomes our neighboring territories for this seasonal gathering," Alexander announced, his gaze briefly meeting mine. "May the Moon Goddess bless our continued prosperity."

The crowd raised their glasses in unison, and for a heartbeat, Alexander's eyes held mine with something resembling our old connection. My wolf stirred hopefully within me.

Then came the sound of carriage wheels on gravel outside.

The great oak doors swung open, and conversation died as a young woman stepped into the hall. She couldn't have been more than twenty-five, with chestnut hair that cascaded down her back in loose waves and eyes the color of amber honey. But it wasn't her beauty that silenced the room—it was her scent.

The floral fragrance hit me like a physical force, sweet yet somehow primal. I watched as male wolves throughout the hall stiffened, nostrils flaring. But none reacted like Alexander.

My mate's body went rigid. His glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the stone floor. Nobody moved to clean it. His eyes dilated, fixed unblinkingly on the newcomer as though she were the moon itself.

"Isabella Monroe," she introduced herself with a curtsy that seemed both practiced and deliberately innocent. "Alpha Blackwood's cousin, from the Eastern Territories. I hope I'm not too late for the celebrations."

Alexander moved before she'd finished speaking. He crossed the room in long, purposeful strides, completely abandoning the speech he'd been giving. Completely abandoning me.

"Welcome to Silver Moon territory," he said, his voice dropping to that intimate timbre I'd once believed was reserved only for me. "I am Alpha Alexander Sterling."

I stood frozen as he took her hand, bringing it to his lips in a gesture he hadn't offered me in years. My wolf whimpered, recognizing the shift in his attention—the absolute focus he was granting this stranger.

"You must be tired from your journey," Alexander continued, not once looking in my direction. "Allow me to personally escort you to our guest quarters."

Isabella's eyes flicked briefly to me, taking in my Luna pendant, before returning to Alexander with a smile that was both demure and knowing. "That's very kind of you, Alpha."

As they walked past me, Alexander finally seemed to remember my existence. "Melissa, continue hosting our guests," he said dismissively, not even meeting my eyes.

The humiliation burned through me as whispers erupted around the hall. I stood there, Luna in title only, watching as my mate led another woman away, his hand possessively at the small of her back.

Two weeks later, the sacred Full Moon ceremony began as it always had for generations. The pack gathered in our ceremonial clearing, the ancient stones of the luna circle gleaming silver under the moonlight. As Luna, I stood at the altar, Alexander momentarily at my side as tradition demanded.

"We honor the Moon Goddess who guides our paths," I began the ritual chant, my voice steady despite the tension between us. Alexander had barely spoken to me since Isabella's arrival, spending every possible moment in her company.

"We offer our gratitude for her blessings," Alexander continued, his part of the ancient words.

The pack joined in the responsive chant, their voices rising toward the full moon above us. I felt a moment of connection, of purpose—this, at least, was still mine. The role of Luna during the sacred rites could not be usurped.

Then it happened.

Mid-chant, Alexander's head snapped up, nostrils flaring. Isabella had arrived late to the ceremony, standing at the edge of the gathering. Even from the altar, I could see the calculated way she lingered just outside the circle, her scent carried by the night breeze.

Without a word—without even completing his sacred vow—Alexander stepped away from the altar. Away from me. The pack's chanting faltered as their Alpha abandoned the ceremony, trailing after Isabella's scent like an obedient pup.

I stood alone at the altar, the ceremonial wine cup trembling in my hand, as every member of the Silver Moon Pack witnessed my complete humiliation. Some averted their eyes in secondhand embarrassment. Others watched with barely concealed pity or cruel amusement.

Beta Marcus attempted to salvage the ceremony, stepping forward to continue the chant, but the damage was done. The sacred rite was broken. My position as Luna publicly undermined by my own mate.

Later that night, I locked myself in my private chambers—the rooms Alexander hadn't entered in months, preferring to sleep elsewhere. My hands shook as I crossed to the far wall where a wooden panel, intricately carved with moon phases, concealed my most personal belongings.

I slid it open, revealing a small silver dagger—a gift from my mother when I became Luna—and a blank section of polished wood on the inside of the panel.

With trembling fingers, I took the dagger and carefully carved a single tally mark into the wood.

"One," I whispered, my voice breaking.

My wolf, so long subdued by years of humiliation, suddenly howled within me—not in sorrow, but in fierce determination.

Nine more chances. Nine more betrayals. And then I would do what I should have done years ago.

I, Luna Melissa Harper, would reject my mate bond with Alpha Alexander Sterling.

The dagger gleamed in the moonlight as I made my vow, feeling something long dormant awaken inside me—the first stirrings of freedom.

The pack run had been Marcelo's idea. He'd announced it three days prior at the weekly council meeting, his Alpha tone leaving no room for debate. A show of unity, he'd called it. A reminder that the Black Moon Pack moved as one body, one purpose. I'd watched him from my seat at the far end of the table—the Luna's chair, though I'd stopped feeling like a Luna months ago—and said nothing. Petra Voss had nodded approvingly. The other council members had murmured their agreement. Rosalina, seated closer to Marcelo than protocol allowed, had smiled that soft, adoring smile she always wore around him. I should have known then. The territory's northern river was swollen from early spring melt, the current fast and mean.
