The bond broke at 8:47 on a Thursday night, right between the toast and the dessert course.

I knew the exact minute because I had just glanced at the antique clock behind the head table, wondering how long I needed to smile before I could slip out and check on the kitchen staff. Then Kieran stood up. He tapped his knife against his glass. The whole banquet hall—three hundred wolves, allied delegates from Ironveil and Copperbrook, my own father two seats down—went still.

He looked right at me. He wasn't nervous. That was the part that hollowed me out first, before he even spoke.

"I, Kieran Shaw, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Harper Grant, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold in the middle of the word *mate*. Not warm-cold. Not cool. Cold like a door slamming shut on an empty room, cold like something inside me had been unplugged from the wall. Then the crack. I felt it split down my collarbone in a thin line of ice, and my knee hit the marble before I could stop it. Someone gasped. I didn't hear who. My hand was already pressing to the mark to hold it in, and I felt the skin split under my fingers, wet and freezing.

I got up.

I don't know how. My legs were made of wet paper. But I got up, and I made myself look at him, and I watched him reach for Selah. She rose beside him in that soft blue dress I'd helped her pick out last month, and she pressed her cheek into his ribs like she'd been waiting her whole life for the cue. Her scent bloomed across the room—that thick synthetic floral musk she'd been wearing for weeks—and every Alpha in the hall inhaled at once.

"My true mate," Kieran said.

I walked out.

Nobody followed. My father Marcus dropped his eyes to his plate the moment I passed his chair. I remember the shape of his bald spot better than I remember the doorway. The bleeding from my neck was slow, cold, and did not want to clot.

I made it as far as the outer wall of the pack house before my knees folded. The stone was still warm from the afternoon sun. I pressed my back into it and shut my eyes, and that's when the dying bond flickered once more and dragged me with it.

I felt her scent on his skin.

Not at a distance. Not in memory. In real time, layered on him like paint, sweet and wrong, and under it his own sweat, and under that the shape of his mouth pressed somewhere I used to be allowed to touch. It came through the bond as clearly as if I were standing in the room. My stomach heaved. I drove my knuckles into the split mark until the pain drowned it out. Once. Twice. Until the connection dimmed and finally, mercifully, quit.

Then I stood up and started walking toward the tree line.

I did not go inside to pack. There was nothing in that house that was mine.

By dawn they came for me at the edge of the forest with a story already written.

Wolfsbane vials, they said. Found in my old dressing room. Patrol led by one of Selah's cousins, of course—she'd chosen her witnesses well. Kieran didn't call a tribunal. He didn't need to. He stood at the border stones in fresh Alpha regalia, mate-mark still pink on Selah's throat, and pronounced my exile like he was clearing a dish.

My father was there too. I made myself look at him.

"I have only one daughter now," Marcus said, loud enough for the patrol to hear, and Selah's face did that little tremble she practices in mirrors.

I crossed the boundary line without a word. The mark on my neck was still bleeding, thin and cold. My hands were empty. But I had spent three years watching that pack house the way a servant watches a rich man's safe—altered pup charts I'd re-filed, wolfsbane shipments that never matched their invoices, names of pups whose awakenings had "failed" in patterns no healer should have missed. I hadn't been able to touch any of it as a wolfless Luna.

I was not a wolfless Luna anymore. I wasn't anything to them anymore. Which meant, finally, I could move.

Three nights in, I found Barnaby.

He was under a fallen pine, wedged in the dry hollow, half his ribs showing and the ragged edge of his left ear crusted black. Selah had thrown him out weeks ago—said his coat shed on her rugs. I hadn't been allowed to look for him. I dropped to my knees in the pine needles and pulled him into my chest, and his heartbeat found mine like it had been waiting.

"We're not going back," I whispered into the top of his skull. "Not to beg. Not for anything."

His tail moved once against my thigh. It was the warmest thing that had touched me in three days, and it was enough.

On the fifth night my bones started breaking.

Not shifting. Breaking. My femur cracked lengthwise and I heard it, a wet green-branch snap inside my own leg, and I screamed into the dirt with my teeth in the moss. My spine went next. My ribs peeled outward one at a time. Something under my skin was tearing loose from something else that had been holding it down for twenty-three years, and then—

Light.

Silver light, exploding out of my chest in a column that lit the trees white for a mile in every direction. Somewhere across the ridge a patrol shouted. I didn't care. I was rising. I was enormous. My paws hit the ground and the ground answered. I could feel my own fur glowing.

And inside my skull, for the first time in my life, a voice.

Female. Ancient. Furious.
