My Husband Used Me to Fund His Mistress Chapter 1

The champagne had been chilling for two hours.

I checked it one more time—still perfect, still cold—then stepped back and looked at the room. Candlelight. White roses. The bed turned down with the precision of people paid to make things look effortless. I'd chosen this hotel specifically because Colson once said the views here were the best in Manhattan. That was three years ago, on our first anniversary. I'd remembered.

I smoothed my hands over the black lace and looked in the mirror. The procedure had healed well. My body felt like mine again, or close enough. I'd spent six weeks recovering quietly, not telling anyone why, just wanting to feel something other than postpartum and invisible. Tonight was supposed to be the answer to all of that.

I touched the thin gold bracelet on my left wrist. My mother's. I always touched it when I needed to feel steady.

Colson was supposed to arrive at nine. I'd told him I had a surprise. He'd texted back a single red heart.

I moved to the adjoining door—I'd booked the next room too, as a staging area for the gifts, for getting dressed without ruining the reveal—and sat on the edge of that bed to wait.

That's when I heard his voice.

At first I thought I was wrong. The walls in these places are thinner than the nightly rate suggests, and Manhattan carries sound strangely at night. But then I heard it again. His laugh. That specific low laugh he only used when he was relaxed, when he thought no one was watching.

I didn't move. I just listened.

'She actually thinks I'm working late.' His voice, easy and amused. 'She's probably home right now reading to the baby and feeling very proud of herself.'

A woman's laugh. Sharp. Practiced.

'She let herself go the second she popped out the kid.' A pause. The sound of something—a bottle, a glass. 'Boring, saggy housewife. I don't even know who she is anymore.'

I pressed my palm flat against the wall. The plaster was cool.

'The divorce gets handled after New Year's. Once the money's ready.' His voice dropped, but not enough. 'You just have to be patient a little longer, Raquel.'

Raquel.

His new executive assistant. Twenty-eight. I'd met her at the company holiday party three weeks ago and shaken her hand and thought nothing of it.

I stood there in black lace in a hotel room full of white roses and I waited for something inside me to break.

It didn't.

It went very, very quiet.

I walked to the mirror. Looked at myself for a long moment. Then I took off the lace mask I'd been wearing, set it down on the bed, and walked out into the hallway.

I knocked on his door.

Colson opened it. Shirt half-unbuttoned. The room behind him soft with the same candlelight I'd arranged next door, because of course he'd thought of that too, or she had. Raquel was visible past his shoulder, sitting on the edge of the bed, legs crossed, wearing an expression she'd clearly rehearsed.

I watched his face move through four things in about two seconds. Shock. Terror. Calculation. And then the smile—that warm, disarming smile that had once made me feel like the only person in any room.

'Baby.' He reached for my hand. 'This isn't what it looks like. I was running a loyalty test—HR wanted documentation that she'd cross professional lines so we'd have grounds to terminate her.'

Behind him, Raquel nodded. Wide eyes. Very sincere.

I looked at him. I looked at her. I looked back at him.

Then I made my face do something soft and uncertain, let my lip tremble just slightly, and said, 'Oh.' A breath. 'I'm sorry. I should have trusted you.'

His shoulders dropped with relief. 'Come here—'

'No, it's fine.' I stepped back. Smiled. 'I'm sorry for interrupting. Good night.'

I walked back to my suite. I packed my things with steady hands—the champagne, the roses, I left all of it. I put on my coat. I took the elevator down alone.

Outside, snow was falling over Manhattan in slow, indifferent sheets. I sat in my car for a moment without starting it. The city moved around me like it always did, like nothing had happened.

I drove home.

Eiden was asleep in his crib, his small fist curled beside his cheek. I stood over him in the dark for a long time. The room smelled like baby powder and something clean and uncomplicated.

I touched his fist. He didn't wake.

'I'm going to fix everything,' I whispered. 'I promise.'

Then I went to my desk, opened my laptop, and started a new document.

At the top, I typed one word: *Evidence.*

I touched my mother's bracelet once. Then I began to write.
