To Save My Mother, I Became the Enemy’s Bride Chapter 1

"Mrs. Hale, we need authorization now."

Dr. Patel's voice shook through my phone while I stood beneath the crystal chandelier in my husband's empty penthouse. Rain struck the windows thirty floors above Manhattan, turning the city into a blur of silver and black.

"Her aneurysm has started leaking again," the doctor continued. "If Dr. Voss can perform the procedure tonight, she has a chance. Without him—"

"I understand."

My mother was unconscious. Her blood was gathering where it should not be, and the best vascular neurosurgeon in the country was at Hale Memorial.

The hospital had been built with Ethan's family money. Dr. Adrian Voss had been recruited with Ethan's signature. The hybrid operating room was reserved through an executive office that reported directly to my husband.

I called Ethan for the seventeenth time.

Voicemail.

I called his assistant.

"I need to talk to Ethan."

A pause. Keyboard clicks. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Hale. Mr. Hale left strict instructions not to be disturbed."

"My mother is dying," I begged. "Please make him answer."

The call ended. My legs gave out, and I slid down the marble wall beneath our wedding portrait.

I called again.

This time, Ethan answered.

"What now, Nora?"

Music drifted behind him. He sounded irritated, not worried.

"Mom's aneurysm is leaking." My words broke between sobs. "She could die tonight. They need Dr. Voss and the hybrid room now. Please move Celeste's procedure. Just a few hours. I'll do anything."

"Lower your voice. Celeste is already prepared for surgery."

"Her condition isn't urgent. Mom has minutes."

He exhaled as if I were embarrassing him. "The moment Celeste needs something, you turn it into a competition. Why can't you be understanding for once?"

"I have understood for years." I pressed a fist to my mouth, but another sob escaped. "I'm only asking you to save my mother."

"I'm asking you to act like an adult. Dr. Patel can stabilize her until morning."

"She said she can't."

"Then she should find another solution. I cannot rearrange a hospital every time you panic."

Tears blurred the carpet beneath my hands.

"Please," I whispered. "I'll apologize to Celeste. I'll kneel in front of her. You don't even have to come. Just make one call. Please don't let my mother die."

For two seconds, he was silent. I thought I had reached him.

Then his voice turned colder.

"Listen to yourself, Nora. This is why no one takes you seriously. A sensible wife would understand the position I'm in instead of making everything harder."

The line went dead.

I called back. He rejected me twice, then turned off his phone.

I curled forward on the floor and cried until no sound came out. My makeup streaked the silk dress I had worn because Ethan once said he liked it. I tasted blood where I had bitten my lip.

I had never felt so small, so foolish, or so completely alone.

Then a message lit the screen.

Stop using your mother to create drama. Celeste's procedure was scheduled. I won't punish her because you're jealous.

Celeste had a benign cardiac arrhythmia. Her operation could have waited weeks. My mother's brain could not wait an hour.

Something inside me went silent.

I had spent four years defending Ethan. When he forgot birthdays, I said he worked too hard. When he left our bed after midnight to answer Celeste, I said they had grown up together. When photographs showed them leaving restaurants, I believed him when he called every meeting business.

Tonight, he had chosen her over my family.

Not because he loved her, he always insisted.

Because, according to him, I was unreasonable.

I ran from the penthouse without a coat. At Hale Memorial, security stopped me outside the executive elevators. I begged a board member I knew, but he said only my husband had the authority. I called every specialist from Boston to Philadelphia. No one could reach Manhattan before morning.

Dr. Patel texted me.

Twenty minutes, Maybe less.

My knees nearly folded.

Then a man in a charcoal coat stepped towards me.

Damian Cross did not belong in Ethan's hospital. The two men had been trying to destroy each other for six years, ever since Ethan forced Damian's father out of a medical technology company and Damian answered by building Crosswell Health into Hale Memorial's strongest competitor.

I had met him twice at charity galas. Both times, his attention had rested on me too long.

Now his dark hair was wet from the rain, and his pale gray eyes were steady.

"Crosswell has a surgical suite ready," he said. "Dr. Leone landed at Teterboro twelve minutes ago. She's as good as Voss. An ambulance is waiting downstairs."

Joy nearly overwhelmed me. I burst into tears, yet still asked him in confusion. "Why?"

"You know why."

I let the tears fall, then wiped them away and wrapped my arms around myself. “Say it.”

Damian came closer until his coat touched my soaked dress. "Come with me."

"To the hospital?"

"Afterward. To my house."

The corridor seemed to narrow.

His jaw tightened. "One year. You live under my roof. You attend events with me when I ask. You do not return to Ethan. And if intimacy happens, it happens because you choose it."

I laughed once, a broken sound. "You found me while my mother was dying and brought a contract."

"I brought a surgeon. The contract can burn if you say no. But I won't pretend I don't want you."

"And if I refuse?"

"Your mother still gets transferred." His expression did not change, but something fierce moved beneath it. "I am not Ethan. I won't hold her life hostage."

That answer exposed the truth: Damian would save my mother even if I gave him nothing, while my husband would let her die to teach me not to be jealous.

The elevator doors opened behind him. Two Crosswell paramedics rushed out with a transport bed.

I watched them enter my mother's room. I watched Dr. Patel sign the transfer order. I watched life return to the corridor in the form of clipped commands and rolling wheels.

Then I looked at Damian.

"If she survives and can recover," I said, "I'll honor the year."

"Nora—"

"Those are my terms."

He studied my face. "Agreed."

The ambulance tore through the rain with my mother inside. Damian and I followed in his car. I sat as far from him as the back seat allowed, digging my nails into my palms while he made calls in calm, precise sentences.

Crosswell Medical Center was already awake for us. Dr. Sofia Leone met the ambulance bay in navy scrubs. She explained the procedure quickly, asked me to sign, and disappeared through secured doors with my mother.

Only then did Damian place a folded contract beside me.

I read every line because I needed something to do besides imagine my mother dying on a table. The agreement called me his live-in companion. It promised privacy, independent legal counsel, medical care for my mother without repayment, and my right to terminate any intimate contact at any time. It also stated that if I returned to Ethan during the year, the arrangement would end.

"You already had this written," I said.

"Not with your name."

That was not comforting.

At four thirty in the morning, Dr. Leone came through the doors.

"The coil is secure. The bleeding has stopped. The next twenty-four hours matter, but the surgery went well."

My body suddenly collapsed. Damian caught me beneath the arms.

I sobbed against the chest of the man I had promised myself to, while my wedding ring pressed between us.

At sunrise, I sat beside my mother's bed and held her warm fingers. Machines breathed and beeped around her. She looked small, but alive.

I texted Ethan one final time.

Mom survived. No thanks to you. My lawyer will contact you.

His answer arrived immediately.

Enough, Nora. Go home.

I removed my ring.

That night, a black car carried me to Damian's estate on the Hudson. His house rose above the river, all glass, stone, and lonely light. A housekeeper named Mrs. Ellis showed me to a guest suite larger than my apartment.

My suitcase waited at the foot of the bed.

Damian stood in the doorway, his tie gone, his sleeves rolled to his forearms.

"Lock the door if it helps you sleep," he said.

"Do you want me tonight?"

His gaze dropped to my bare left hand, then returned to my face.

"Yes."

The blunt answer sent fear through me at once.

"But wanting isn't permission," he added. "Your mother is alive. That is enough for tonight."

He walked away.

I closed the door and turned the lock.

Then I leaned against it, listening to his footsteps disappear, and wondered why the man who had purchased a year of my life gave me a choice.
