My Husband Adored His Mistress, so I Asked Her Out

"Did you see her at the charity gala last month?" a woman's voice drifted out. "Lily Matthews. She looked absolutely stunning in that emerald dress." "The way Seth looked at her..." another voice added with a knowing laugh. "I mean, we all know about his thing for her, but he wasn't even trying to hide it." I froze, my hand hovering over the elevator button. "Poor Quinn," the first voice continued. "She's beautiful, but she's not Lily. Everyone knows Seth's been obsessed with her since college." "Remember when Lily came for that consulting meeting last week? Seth practically rearranged his entire schedule. And the way he walked her to her car..." "It's so obvious. I heard from Jennifer in accounting that Seth and Lily were seen at the Ritz last Tuesday. Same day Quinn was at that women's leadership conference." My chest tightened, but I remained perfectly still, hidden by the wall. "I feel bad for Quinn. She seems sweet, but she has to know, right? The whole office can see it." "Maybe she's in denial. I would be." Their laughter felt like needles against my skin. I waited until their footsteps faded before moving, my face carefully composed despite the storm building inside me.

My Husband Adored His Mistress, so I Asked Her Out Chapter 1

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing the pristine marble lobby of Westbrook Corporation.

I stepped out, my heels clicking against the polished floor, and felt the familiar weight of expectation settle on my shoulders.

"Mrs. Westbrook!" The receptionist's voice was bright, almost theatrical in its enthusiasm. "Welcome to your first day. HR is expecting you on the fifteenth floor."

I forced a smile and nodded, pressing the elevator button again. The ride up felt endless, each floor marking another step deeper into Seth's domain. When the doors opened, a woman in her thirties with perfectly styled blonde hair greeted me.

"Quinn! I'm Sarah from HR. We're so excited to have you join our marketing team." Her handshake was firm, professional. "Your mother-in-law spoke very highly of your capabilities."

Of course she did. Eleanor Westbrook never did anything without calculation.

Sarah led me through an open office space filled with sleek desks and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Conversations quieted as we passed, and I caught the subtle glances, the whispered exchanges. My stomach tightened.

"Here's your workspace," Sarah announced, gesturing to a corner desk with a view. "You'll be working on the Morrison account initially. It's a significant client, so we're confident you'll do well."

Five hundred thousand a month for marketing work I could do in my sleep. The absurdity wasn't lost on me.

After Sarah left, I settled into my chair and opened my laptop.

The morning passed in a blur of introductory emails and project briefings, but I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched.

During my lunch break, I decided to explore the building, familiarizing myself with my new environment.

The executive floor was quieter, more refined. As I walked past Seth's corner office, I glimpsed him through the glass walls, his dark hair perfectly styled, his attention focused on whatever was displayed on his computer screen.

He didn't notice me, and I didn't announce myself.

I was heading back to the elevator when I heard voices from the break room.

"Did you see her at the charity gala last month?" a woman's voice drifted out. "Lily Matthews. She looked absolutely stunning in that emerald dress."

"The way Seth looked at her..." another voice added with a knowing laugh. "I mean, we all know about his thing for her, but he wasn't even trying to hide it."

I froze, my hand hovering over the elevator button.

"Poor Quinn," the first voice continued. "She's beautiful, but she's not Lily. Everyone knows Seth's been obsessed with her since college."

"Remember when Lily came for that consulting meeting last week? Seth practically rearranged his entire schedule. And the way he walked her to her car..."

"It's so obvious. I heard from Jennifer in accounting that Seth and Lily were seen at the Ritz last Tuesday. Same day Quinn was at that women's leadership conference."

My chest tightened, but I remained perfectly still, hidden by the wall.

"I feel bad for Quinn. She seems sweet, but she has to know, right? The whole office can see it."

"Maybe she's in denial. I would be."

Their laughter felt like needles against my skin. I waited until their footsteps faded before moving, my face carefully composed despite the storm building inside me.

The rest of the afternoon crawled by. Every interaction felt loaded with subtext, every glance a reminder of what everyone apparently knew but me—or rather, what I'd known but refused to acknowledge.

That evening, Eleanor had invited us to a company dinner at the Four Seasons. I'd chosen a midnight blue dress that hugged my figure elegantly, my hair swept into a low chignon. If I was going to be the subject of office gossip, I'd at least look the part of the successful CEO's wife.

The hotel's ballroom buzzed with conversation and the soft clink of champagne glasses. Eleanor, regal in burgundy silk, greeted me with genuine warmth.

"Quinn, darling, you look radiant." She kissed both my cheeks. "How was your first day?"

"Enlightening," I replied, accepting a glass of champagne from a passing waiter.

Eleanor's eyes sharpened slightly, but before she could respond, a ripple of attention moved through the room. I turned to see what had captured everyone's focus.

Lily Matthews had arrived.

She was exactly as the office gossips had described—stunning in an effortless way that seemed almost calculated. Her auburn hair cascaded in loose waves over one shoulder, and her cream-colored dress was simple but expensive. She moved through the room with practiced grace, accepting greetings and air kisses like a queen holding court.

But it was Seth's reaction that made my blood run cold.

He appeared at her side almost instantly, his hand finding the small of her back with an intimacy that made my stomach clench. His eyes never left her face as she spoke, and when she laughed—a delicate, musical sound—his expression transformed into something I'd never seen directed at me.

Adoration. Pure, unguarded adoration.

"Quinn?" Eleanor's voice seemed to come from far away.

I blinked, realizing I'd been staring. "Excuse me?"

"I asked if you'd like to meet some of the board members."

"Of course." I forced my attention back to Eleanor, but my peripheral vision remained locked on Seth and Lily.

Throughout the evening, I watched them orbit each other like binary stars. Seth found excuses to touch her—adjusting her shawl, guiding her through the crowd with his hand on her elbow, leaning close to whisper something that made her eyes sparkle. When she excused herself to the restroom, his gaze followed her until she disappeared from view.

I excused myself as well, needing a moment to process what I was witnessing. The bathroom was mercifully empty, its marble surfaces gleaming under soft lighting. I gripped the edge of the sink, staring at my reflection.

The woman looking back at me was beautiful, successful, perfectly put together. She was also a fool.

Three years. Three years of hoping, of believing that patience and devotion would eventually break through Seth's indifference. Three years of making excuses for his distance, his distraction, his casual cruelty disguised as benign neglect.

The bathroom door opened, and two women entered, their conversation already in progress.

"...absolutely shameless. Did you see how he was looking at her?"

"In front of his wife, too. I almost felt sorry for Quinn."

I stepped into a stall, closing the door quietly.

"Lily's smart, though. She knows exactly what she's doing. That innocent act doesn't fool me for a second."

"Well, it's working on Seth. Mark my words, this marriage won't last much longer."

Their voices faded as they left, but their words echoed in the silence.

I remained in the stall for several minutes, something fundamental shifting inside me. The humiliation was complete now, public and undeniable. But instead of the devastation I'd expected, I felt something else entirely.

Clarity.

When I finally emerged, my reflection showed the same beautiful woman, but her eyes held a different light. No longer the eyes of a victim waiting to be discarded.

They were the eyes of someone who had just decided to take control of her own story.

I returned to the ballroom with my head high, my smile perfectly calibrated. Seth was still orbiting Lily, but now I watched them with new eyes—not as a betrayed wife, but as a strategist studying her opponents.

If Seth wanted Lily Matthews so desperately, perhaps it was time I helped him get exactly what he deserved.
