My Mate Humiliated Me Before the Lycan King Chapter 1
At 6:42 p.m., after ten months of living in rogue filth, my boots hit the gravel inside Ironveil’s wrought-iron gates.
Lia was a burning weight across my shoulders. Her fever soaked through my torn flannel, her shallow breaths rattling against my spine. My arms trembled, muscles locked rigid from carrying her the last twelve miles without pause. My throat tasted like blood and dirt.
I expected border patrols. I expected medical stretchers.
Instead, fifty wolves stood in absolute silence, arranged in four rigid ranks across the courtyard. Torches hissed in iron sconces. It wasn’t a greeting for a returning scout. It was a tribunal.
At the center stood Nicholas.
My mate. My Alpha. For three years, I had quietly funneled Lycan-grade contracts into his council, bribed territorial cartels to leave his borders untouched, and drank daily doses of wolfsbane tea until my true scent died in my pores—all so he could stand tall without feeling overshadowed by what I was.
Beside him stood Charli Vargas.
The torches caught the light around Charli’s neck. A collar of raw, carved moonstone. On her right wrist, an engraved silver cuff. Both were my bonding gifts—heirloom pieces forged from ancestral silver that Nicholas had promised to place on me once our third winter passed.
Charli rested two manicured fingers on his forearm. Her scent—cheap lilac and heavy musk—hung in thick, suffocating layers over his skin. He didn’t smell like pine and rain anymore. He smelled entirely like her.
"Nicholas," I rasped, barely able to lift my chin. "Take her. Lia’s dying. We need Maren. Now."
Nicholas didn’t move toward his sister. He didn't even drop his eyes to the girl slung over my back. He stepped forward two paces, his jaw set, his chest expanding with that familiar, rehearsed Alpha grandeur.
"Ophelia," he said. His voice cut flat across the yard, pitching cleanly to the silent gallery of his pack. "You have abandoned your post and brought contamination to our gate."
"Nicholas, look at her face," I croaked. "It’s Lia."
He drew a breath. The words rolled out without a hitch, polished and practiced:
"I, Nicholas, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Ophelia, as my mate."
The blow hit me physically before my brain could process the sound.
The mating mark on the left side of my neck flared with white heat, then plunged into absolute, dead ice. The warmth that had tied my pulse to his for three years simply vanished, like a heavy oak door slamming shut on an empty, frozen room. The bond didn't stretch or fray; it snapped clean. A hollow, nauseating vacuum tore through my chest, driving me straight down to one knee.
Lia slipped from my grip, rolling onto the gravel with a faint, broken whimper.
My inner wolf—the ancient, silver beast I had poisoned with wolfsbane for a decade just to make myself small enough to love this man—didn't whimper. She didn't curl into the dark. Beneath the chemical numbness in my blood, she snapped her jaws and snarled, clawing at my ribs with a rage that rattled my teeth.
"Silence your dog," Nicholas said, looking right through me.
"She is your blood!" My voice cracked, raw and furious as I dragged myself upright. I didn't beg. I didn't reach for the mark dying against my collarbone. I pointed a trembling, dirt-caked finger at Lia's sunken face. "Look at her, Nicholas! Look at your sister!"
He gave a slight, flicking nod toward Charli.
Bones popped with sickening speed. Charli shifted mid-stride, her coat a dull, reddish gray, jaws already snapping with frothing saliva. She didn't lunge at me. She went straight for the feverish girl curled on the stones.
"No!"
I threw myself flat over Lia's body before the gray wolf could tear her throat out.
Charli’s front paws slammed into my spine. Her claws caught my left shoulder, ripping through fabric and digging five parallel furrows into my flesh. The impact knocked the remaining air from my lungs. Blood—hot, bright, and smelling faintly of the suppressed silver bloodline I carried—splattered across the grey gravel, mingling with the dirt beneath Lia’s cheek.
Above us, not a single Ironveil warrior stepped forward. Beta Reid kept his chin high and his eyes averted. Fifty wolves watched an Alpha let his mistress tear into his own blood sister.
Beneath me, Lia finally opened her glazed eyes. She looked up into my face, then over my shoulder at the brother who had ordered her death, and let out a high, ragged scream of pure terror.
Charli tore back my skin again, teeth snapping an inch from my jugular.
My blood seeped into the gravel, pooling around the severed mark on my neck. And deep within the marrow of my bones, where the wolfsbane had starved my true nature for ten years, the chemical chains violently snapped.
Silver sparks ignited behind my retinas. A low, thunderous vibration began to hum through my vocal cords—an octave so deep it didn't belong to a common wolf.
Nicholas blinked, taking an instinctive step back as the air around us dropped ten degrees.
High above the tree line, the rhythmic, heavy thud of twin military helicopter rotors began to tear through the clouds, descending fast directly over the Ironveil pack house.
