Chapter 6

I fell in love with Damian beneath a sky full of fireworks.

I gave him my body because he had already earned my trust.

Hours later, in the dark, he told me the one truth I had never asked clearly enough.

He was not merely a distant member of Adrian’s family.

He was Adrian’s uncle and the controlling power behind the Whitmore empire.

By sunrise, I had ended our relationship.

Three weeks later, a pregnancy test turned positive in my hand.

The university’s winter research gala was held at a vineyard north of the city. Professor Grant insisted I attend because our patent had attracted interest from three medical companies.

I wore a dark green dress borrowed from Rachel, who was then a newly hired corporate attorney in the technology-transfer office. Damian arrived late from London and found me on the terrace, hiding from donors who wanted me to explain tissue regeneration while they chewed steak.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

“You look jet-lagged.”

“I crossed an ocean for your charming conversation.”

“You crossed an ocean for a tax-deductible gala.”

He offered his hand. “Dance with me.”

“There’s no music out here.”

“Then no one can criticize my timing.”

I let him draw me closer.

Music drifted faintly through the open doors. His palm rested against my lower back. Cold stars spread above the vineyard, and the first firework burst beyond the hills at midnight.

“I love you,” he said.

No performance. No dramatic pause. The words vibrated against my hair.

Fear came first, because fear had guarded me longer than hope.

Then I looked at the man who had protected my work, listened to my anger, and never once asked me to become smaller for his comfort.

“I love you too.”

His kiss tasted like champagne and winter air.

We left before the fireworks ended.

At my apartment, Damian stopped inside the door. Desire had tightened every line of his body, but he still waited.

“Tell me what you want,” he said.

“You.”

His eyes darkened. “Be certain.”

I reached for his coat and pushed it from his shoulders. “I am.”

The kiss that followed carried months of restraint. His hands framed my face, slid down my back, and pulled me against the heat of him. I unbuttoned his shirt with clumsy fingers. He laughed softly when I missed one, then caught my wrists and kissed each palm.

“Slow down,” he murmured. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Those words nearly broke me.

He carried me to the bedroom after I wrapped my legs around his waist, both of us laughing when he bumped the doorframe. The laughter faded when he laid me down.

Every touch was a question. Every answer was mine to give.

He kissed the scar on my neck where Chloe had torn away Adrian’s necklace. He kissed the inside of my wrist where Marcus had grabbed me. He treated the places connected to humiliation as if they deserved tenderness instead.

I pulled him closer and stopped thinking about the past.

The night became warmth, breath, tangled sheets, and his name against my mouth. When urgency rose between us, he slowed whenever I needed him to. When I asked for more, he gave it without making me feel fragile. I had expected surrender to frighten me. With Damian, it felt like choosing.

Afterward, I lay across his chest while rain touched the windows.

His fingers traced circles along my bare shoulder.

“We should go somewhere when your term ends,” he said. “No laboratories. No board meetings.”

“Do you know how to exist without a board meeting?”

“I’m willing to conduct a controlled trial.”

I smiled against his skin.

Then his phone lit on the nightstand.

RICHARD WHITMORE.

I felt Damian go still.

“Your brother?” I asked.

“Yes.”

Something in his tone made me lift my head. “I thought you said the Whitmores involved in my past were distant relatives.”

“I said I was not close to Adrian.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

He sat up, the sheet falling to his waist. “Evelyn—”

“How closely are you related to him?”

Silence answered first.

“I’m his uncle.”

The room turned cold.

I climbed out of bed and reached for my dress. My hands shook so badly I could not find the zipper.

Damian came toward me. “Let me explain.”

“Don’t touch me.”

He stopped immediately.

“You knew,” I said. “When I told you about Adrian, you knew exactly who he was.”

“Yes.”

“You let me keep seeing you.”

“I told myself his choices were not mine. I told myself revealing the connection too soon would make you leave before you knew me.”

“So you chose for me.”

Pain crossed his face. “I was afraid.”

I laughed bitterly. “That excuse must run in your family.”

“It was wrong.”

“Are you part of Whitmore Holdings?”

“I run it.”

I stared at him.

The private sponsor. The international travel. The deference from executives. I had seen each piece and accepted the harmless version because I wanted him to be safe.

“You’re the head of the family.”

“Financially and legally, yes. Richard manages the domestic subsidiaries, but I hold the controlling trust.”

I dragged the dress over my head.

“Evelyn, what happened tonight was real.”

“That is what makes this worse.”

“I should have told you sooner.”

“You should have told me before you kissed me. Before you came into my bed. Before I said I loved you.”

He flinched at each sentence.

I pointed toward the door. “Leave.”

“I love you.”

“Leave.”

He dressed in silence. At the door, he looked back once.

“I won’t use the foundation, the university, or your research to reach you. You have my word.”

“I had your word when you told me to ask anything.”

The door closed.

I collapsed on the floor after he left.

For three weeks, Damian kept his promise. No calls. No surprise visits. Professor Grant confirmed that my funding remained untouched. A formal notice transferred oversight of our grant to an independent committee so I would never have to interact with him.

His restraint should have made forgetting easier.

It did not.

I missed him while brushing my teeth, while reading data, while passing the coffee shop where he had memorized my order. I hated him for lying. I hated myself for understanding why he had been afraid.

Then I began waking nauseated.

I blamed stress until Rachel found me vomiting in a restroom after a patent meeting.

“When was your last period?” she asked.

I knew before I answered.

The pharmacy test turned positive in under a minute.

I sat on the edge of my bathtub, staring at two pink lines.

My first feeling was terror.

My second was love—immediate, unreasonable, and fierce.

I pressed one hand against my still-flat stomach.

The baby knew nothing about Whitmore lies. It had done nothing wrong. It was not leverage, scandal, or proof of anyone’s ownership.

It was mine.

“I won’t let them hurt you,” I whispered.

I did not call Damian.

I made a doctor’s appointment under a shortened name, moved to a different apartment, and told myself I could raise a child alone.

What I did not know was that someone would soon recognize me at the hospital.
