Chapter 7

I planned to hide my pregnancy from Damian forever.

At twelve weeks, I heard my baby’s heartbeat for the first time.

At thirteen weeks, one of Damian’s oldest friends saw me leaving the obstetrics clinic.

Two days later, Damian stood outside my apartment in the rain.

He cried before I did.

Dr. Samuel Reed recognized me near the hospital elevators.

He was a cardiac surgeon, a Westbridge alumnus, and the only friend Damian mentioned with unguarded affection. We had met twice over dinner.

His gaze dropped to the ultrasound envelope in my hand. Then he looked at my stomach.

“Evelyn.”

“Don’t.”

“Is Damian the father?”

I stepped into the elevator. “This is private medical information, Sam.”

He held the door before it closed. “He’s barely functioning.”

“That does not give you permission.”

“No, it doesn’t.” He released the door. “But if that child is his, he deserves to know.”

“And I deserved to know who he was before I slept with him.”

The doors closed.

For two days, nothing happened. I began to hope Sam had respected my boundary.

Then I opened my apartment door at eleven at night and found Damian in the hallway, soaked by a winter storm.

He looked thinner. His eyes were red.

“Sam told you.”

“He told me he saw you at the obstetrics clinic. He did not share anything else.” Damian swallowed. “Are you pregnant?”

I could have lied.

Instead, I stepped aside.

He entered but remained by the door as if crossing farther required permission.

“Yes,” I said. “Thirteen weeks.”

His face broke.

Damian covered his mouth with one hand and turned away. His shoulders shook once. When he looked back, tears had escaped despite his effort to control them.

“Is the baby healthy?”

“So far.”

“And you?”

“I’m healthy.”

Relief moved through him. He lowered himself onto the edge of a chair, suddenly less like the head of an empire and more like a man whose knees would not hold him.

“I won’t take the child from you,” he said. “I won’t use lawyers or money. If you want me gone, I’ll arrange support through a blind trust and stay away. But if there is any chance—any chance at all—let me earn a place in your lives.”

I folded my arms around myself. “You don’t get to promise a happy ending before you understand the beginning.”

“Then tell me everything.”

This time, I did.

I told him that Adrian had hidden his identity for almost a year. I described Chloe’s slap, the guards taking my clothes, the office whispers, and Mr. Caldwell forcing me out to protect Harrington’s account. I told him about the twelve unanswered calls and the doctoral acceptance letter on my table.

Damian listened without defending anyone.

When I finished, he stared at the floor.

“Richard had Adrian confined at the estate,” he said. “I was in Singapore negotiating a merger. By the time I returned, Adrian claimed the woman he loved had disappeared. Richard called you an opportunist who ran after being exposed.”

“And you believed him?”

“I did not care enough to investigate.” His voice roughened. “That is my shame. I thought it was another family scandal. If I had asked one question—”

“You might not have found me.”

“I would have found the security footage. I would have found your dismissal.”

He raised his eyes.

“I cannot undo what they did. I can promise never to hide another truth from you, even if it costs me you.”

I wanted to trust him. Wanting felt dangerous.

So I tested the promise.

I asked about his money, his controlling trust, every family obligation, every former relationship, and every business connection to Westbridge. He answered until dawn. When he did not know, he said so. When the truth made him look ruthless, he did not soften it.

Then he gave me passwords to the family governance files and the contact information for his independent counsel.

“Verify everything,” he said.

Trust did not return in one grand gesture. It returned in small, unglamorous pieces.

Damian attended appointments when invited and waited in the lobby when he was not. He assembled a crib backward, cursed at the instructions, and refused to let an assistant fix it. He transferred the Whitmore Foundation’s university programs into an independently audited nonprofit, removing his ability to influence my academic work.

When I woke at three in the morning craving peaches in December, he found them.

When fear woke me instead, he sat on the bathroom floor and listened.

At twenty weeks, our son kicked beneath Damian’s palm.

Damian looked at me with wonder. “He’s strong.”

“You don’t know it’s a boy.”

“I have a feeling.”

“You also had a feeling you could build a crib.”

“The crib remains structurally sound.”

“It leans.”

“So do several important buildings.”

I laughed, and the last wall between us cracked.

We married quietly at city hall three months before Leo was born. Professor Grant and Rachel served as witnesses. I wore a cream dress from a department store. Damian wore a navy suit and looked happier than he had at any gala.

There was no Whitmore announcement.

That was my choice. I did not want our marriage turned into market news while I finished my doctorate and built a name no family could give or take.

Damian respected it.

Leo arrived after seventeen hours of labor, furious and perfect. Damian wept openly when the nurse placed him in his arms.

My career grew beside our family.

Professor Grant introduced me to Dr. Noah Bennett, founder of a small regenerative-medicine startup called NovaGen. I joined as its sixth employee in exchange for modest pay and equity. My scaffold technology became the center of our first therapeutic platform.

I worked through failed trials, investor rejections, and nights when Leo slept in a carrier against Damian’s chest while I analyzed data at the kitchen table. Damian offered capital once. I refused because I needed NovaGen’s success to be independent of Whitmore money.

He never offered again.

Four years later, our product entered major clinical partnerships. NovaGen expanded across three countries. My original shares made me wealthy; later performance grants made me one of the company’s largest owners. I became chief scientific strategist because I had earned the position in laboratories, patent hearings, and negotiations where no one cared whose wife I was.

For privacy, I remained Dr. Evelyn Carter professionally. Damian and I wore wedding bands but avoided publicity. Leo knew that secrecy was not shame—it was shelter until we chose otherwise.

Then NovaGen selected Bellhaven for expansion.

The past came looking for us before we were ready to step into the light.

In the present, our car reached the hotel shortly after midnight. Damian carried the sleeping Leo upstairs. I watched him place our son in bed and tuck the green dragon beneath his arm.

“What happens now?” I asked.

Damian straightened.

“Now Richard and Eleanor learn that being my relatives does not protect them from consequences.”

“And Adrian?”

A knock sounded at the suite door before he could answer.

Through the security screen, I saw my former boyfriend standing in the hallway.

He had no idea his uncle was inside.
