Chapter 3

I didn't plan it.

We left the bar separately—Oliver first, then me ten minutes later. The plan was simple: meet at his place to go over the Ironclaw Pack records I'd memorized. Strategy. Revenge. That was all.

But the moment I stepped into his apartment, the scent hit me like a tidal wave. Cedarwood and night rain, so thick I could taste it. My legs felt unsteady. The hollow space in my chest—the one that had been dead since the bond broke—flared to life, pulsing hot and insistent.

Oliver stood by the window, his back to me. His shoulders were tense. When he turned, his eyes were already shifting—gold bleeding into black.

"Monica." His voice was rough. Strained. "If you need to leave, do it now."

I should have. Every rational part of me screamed to walk out the door. But the rage was still there, burning under my skin. The humiliation. The memory of Noah turning away from me like I was nothing. And underneath it all, the mate-pull—relentless, demanding, drowning out every thought except one:

*I want this.*

I crossed the room.

Oliver went very still. His hands clenched at his sides. "Monica—"

I kissed him.

It wasn't gentle. Wasn't tender. It was fury and grief and seven years of being told I wasn't enough, all poured into one desperate, reckless act. Oliver made a sound low in his throat—half growl, half groan—and his control shattered. His hands came up, one fisting in my hair, the other gripping my waist hard enough to bruise. He kissed me back like he was drowning and I was air.

We didn't make it to the bedroom.

The couch. The floor. I didn't care. His weight pressed me down, solid and real, and for the first time since the bond broke I felt *something*. Not the hollow ache. Not the silence. Something alive. Something burning.

His mouth moved to my neck, teeth scraping over the spot where a mark would go, and I gasped. "Don't."

He froze instantly. Pulled back just enough to meet my eyes, his breath coming hard. "I won't. I swear it."

"No mark," I said, voice shaking. "Not tonight. Not—"

"Not ever, if that's what you need." His hand cupped my face, thumb brushing my cheekbone. "Your terms, Monica. Always."

I pulled him back down.

It was reckless. Stupid. I didn't care. The mate-pull roared through me, louder than thought, louder than fear. Oliver's scent wrapped around me like a living thing, and somewhere deep in the dead space of my chest, something stirred. Not my wolf. Not yet. But a flicker. A pulse. Like a heartbeat trying to restart.

Afterward, I lay on the floor staring at the ceiling, Oliver's arm heavy across my waist. His breathing had evened out. Steady. Deep. The scent of cedarwood and night rain was everywhere, mixed with sweat and something darker, richer. The mate-bond hummed between us, incomplete but undeniable.

I told myself it was just the scent-pull. Biology. Nothing more.

I didn't believe myself.

---

Morning light filtered through the window, pale and cold. I woke on the couch—Oliver must have carried me there sometime in the night. He sat in the chair across from me, fully dressed, two mugs of coffee on the table between us.

His eyes tracked me as I sat up, pulling the blanket he'd draped over me tighter. Neither of us spoke for a long moment.

"I meant what I said," I said finally. My voice was hoarse. "No mark. Not yet. Maybe not ever."

Oliver's jaw tightened, but he nodded. "Your terms."

"I'll work with you. I'll help you take down Winston and Isabela. But I won't be caged again." I met his eyes, forcing myself to hold steady. "I can't."

"I'm not Noah Kelly." His voice was flat. Hard. "I won't trap you. I won't manipulate you. And I sure as hell won't make you beg for something you deserve." He leaned forward, forearms on his knees. "You set the pace. You choose when—or if—we complete the bond. I'll wait."

The restraint in his voice—the barely controlled tension—was so different from Noah's endless conditions, his constant delays, his weaponized patience. Oliver wasn't withholding. He was *yielding*.

It lodged in my chest like a splinter I couldn't remove.

I reached for the coffee. Took a sip. It was strong, bitter, exactly what I needed. "The coronation is in three weeks."

"Yes."

"Then we have work to do."

Oliver's lips curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "We do."

We spent the rest of the morning going over pack records. I recited everything I'd memorized—Noah's alliances, his patrol schedules, the weaknesses in Ironclaw's defensive perimeter. Oliver took notes, asked sharp questions, his mind clearly working three steps ahead.

But every time his hand brushed mine across the table, the mate-pull flared hot and insistent. And every time, he pulled back first.

Your terms. Always.

---

Three weeks later, I woke up vomiting.

It had been building for days—nausea that came in waves, a hypersensitivity to scent that made even coffee unbearable, and a strange heat beneath my skin I couldn't explain. I'd told myself it was stress. Exhaustion. The coronation was two days away, and we'd been working nonstop.

But when I stumbled out of bed for the third morning in a row and barely made it to the bathroom, I knew.

I contacted Sabrina through an encrypted message. She agreed to meet me at a neutral clinic in unclaimed territory—no questions, no records.

The clinic was small. Sterile. Sabrina was already waiting when I arrived, her healer's kit open on the exam table. She didn't ask what was wrong. Just gestured for me to sit and started running tests.

Blood draw. Scent sample. Physical exam. She worked in silence, her expression carefully neutral.

When she finally looked up from the results, her face had gone very still.

"Monica." Her voice was careful. Too careful. "You're pregnant."

The world tilted.

I gripped the edge of the exam table, knuckles white. "That's not possible. I don't have a wolf. I can't—"

"You do have a wolf." Sabrina set the test results down and met my eyes. "Monica. Your wolf is waking up."

I stared at her. The words didn't make sense. My wolf had been dormant my entire life. Silent. Dead.

"The pregnancy triggered it," Sabrina continued quietly. "And based on these readings—" She tapped the paper. "This isn't just any pup. The hormone markers are off the charts. This is Lycan-blood, Monica. Royal-tier."

The flicker in my chest—the one that had pulsed to life the night I met Oliver—surged. Not faint. Not fragile. *Strong*.

And for the first time in my life, I felt my wolf stir.

Not a whisper. A roar.
