Healer's Rejected & Reborn

The autumn harvest ceremony should have been a celebration of abundance and unity, but as I stood at the edge of the ceremonial circle, my hands trembling at my sides, all I could feel was the weight of hostile eyes upon me. The pack had gathered in the great clearing behind the packhouse, their faces illuminated by the flickering torches that cast dancing shadows across the ancient oak trees. Meadow Hansen stood in the center of the circle, her golden hair catching the firelight as she prepared for the ritualistic combat display—a tradition meant to honor the Moon Goddess and demonstrate our pack's strength. She wore a flowing white dress that would be torn away when she shifted, and even in human form, her beauty was undeniable. The pack members watched her with admiration, their eyes bright with anticipation. But I knew what was coming. As the pack's healer, I would be called upon if anyone was injured during the ceremony. My wolf, Luna, stirred uneasily within me, sensing my anxiety. *Stay calm,* Luna whispered in my mind. *We've done this countless times before.* Yet something felt different tonight.

Healer's Rejected & Reborn Chapter 1

*We've done this countless times before.*

Yet something felt different tonight. Caspian stood beside the ceremonial altar, his imposing figure draped in the traditional Alpha robes. His dark eyes found mine across the circle, and I saw something cold and calculating in his gaze—something that made my stomach twist with dread. Since Meadow's return from abroad three weeks ago, he'd grown increasingly distant, his touches becoming perfunctory, his words sharp with impatience.

The combat began with a thunderous howl that echoed through the forest. Meadow shifted seamlessly, her wolf form a stunning cream-colored creature with amber eyes that gleamed with predatory intelligence. She faced off against Marcus Rivera, Caspian's Beta, whose brown wolf was larger but moved with careful restraint—this was meant to be a display, not a true battle.

But Meadow fought with vicious intensity, her claws raking across Marcus's flank as she sought to prove her worthiness as the future Luna. The pack cheered, their voices rising in excitement as the two wolves circled each other in the firelight.

Then it happened.

Meadow lunged forward with reckless abandon, her trajectory off-balance. Marcus, caught off guard by her aggressive move, tried to dodge but couldn't avoid the collision entirely. They crashed together in a tangle of fur and claws, and Meadow's yelp of pain cut through the night air like a blade.

When they separated, dark blood stained the ground beneath her. Deep gashes ran across her left shoulder and chest, the wounds too severe for her wolf's natural healing to handle quickly.

"Eva!" Caspian's Alpha command cracked like a whip across the clearing. "Now!"

I rushed forward, my healer's kit clutched in my hands, but my legs felt weak beneath me. The entire pack watched as I knelt beside Meadow's injured wolf form, her amber eyes glaring at me with unmistakable hatred even through her pain.

*Focus,* Luna urged. *She's hurt. Help her.*

But as I placed my hands on Meadow's wounds, preparing to channel my healing energy, I felt Caspian's presence looming behind me like a storm cloud. His Alpha aura pressed down on my shoulders, heavy with expectation and barely contained fury. The pack's silence was deafening, broken only by Meadow's labored breathing.

"Hurry up," Caspian growled, his voice low and dangerous.

My hands began to shake. The healing energy that usually flowed through me like warm honey now felt erratic, unstable. Meadow's wolf form writhed beneath my touch, her hostile aura clashing with my attempts to help her. She didn't want my healing—she wanted me gone, erased from Caspian's life entirely.

The energy surged wrong, too fast, too harsh. Instead of the gentle warmth that promoted natural healing, power crackled through my fingertips like lightning. Meadow's wolf let out a shriek of agony as the magic seared across her wounds, sealing them closed but leaving behind twisted, ugly scars that marred her perfect cream-colored fur.

Gasps echoed through the clearing. I jerked my hands back, staring in horror at what I'd done. The wounds were closed, but the scarring was permanent—thick, ropey marks that no amount of werewolf healing could ever erase.

Meadow shifted back to human form, her hands flying to her shoulder and chest where the scars now marked her skin like brands. Tears streamed down her face as she stared at her reflection in the ceremonial mirror one of the pack members quickly brought forward.

"My face," she sobbed, though the scars were on her shoulder and chest. "My beautiful skin... it's ruined! Ruined!"

The pack murmured in shocked whispers. I remained frozen on my knees, my hands still tingling with the residual magic that had gone so terribly wrong.

Caspian's hand landed on my shoulder like a vise, his fingers digging into my skin hard enough to bruise. When I looked up at him, his face was a mask of cold fury.

"My office," he said, his Alpha tone brooking no argument. "Now."

The Pierre Hotel smelled like gardenias and old money. I stood just inside the ballroom entrance and let the scene wash over me. Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across a hundred faces I didn't recognize and a dozen I did. Women in gowns that cost more than cars. Men in tuxedos that fit like they were born wearing them. Waiters gliding between clusters of conversation with trays of champagne so pale it looked like liquid gold. Six years ago, I would have been one of those waiters. I took a glass from a passing tray and didn't drink it. My steel-gray gown was custom Valentino, fitted so precisely it felt like armor. It cost more than my entire first-year scholarship at Columbia.

I tapped my pencil against the edge of my sketchpad, staring at the half-finished design for the ceremonial necklace I planned to surprise Marcus with for our fifth anniversary. The silver and moonstone piece would symbolize our enduring bond—five perfect years as Alpha and Luna of the Silverstone Pack. "What do you think, Lyra?" I whispered to my wolf, who purred contentedly in my mind. *Beautiful, like all your creations, Victoria.* My inner wolf had always been my greatest supporter, even before Marcus. I smiled, setting down my pencil and stretching my arms above my head. The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of our shared study, casting a warm glow over the polished oak desk. Marcus had left his tablet behind this morning in his rush to handle what he'd called an "urgent pack matter." I reached for it, thinking I could review some of the anniversary celebration plans we'd been discussing. We'd granted each other access to our devices years ago—a symbol of trust between mates. The screen lit up at my touch, revealing a messaging app I rarely used. A notification blinked insistently in the corner—from Amber Rodriguez, our new pack coordinator.
