I’m Carrying the Lycan Heir After My Alpha’s Betrayal Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Saturday night, in front of three hundred witnesses.

I felt it snap before Noah even finished speaking. The words came slow, formal, each syllable a blade dragging through my chest: "I, Noah Kelly, Alpha of the Ironclaw Pack, reject you, Monica Perry, as my mate and sever whatever bond exists between us."

The partial bond—seven years of chosen-mate devotion that had never been real—tore loose like ripping stitches from a wound that hadn't healed. My knees buckled. The marble floor came up fast, cold against my palms. Inside my chest, the space where my wolf should have been went utterly dead. Not silent. Dead.

I lifted my head.

Noah wasn't even looking at me. He'd already turned away, crossing the distance to Lola Peters in three long strides. She stood just inside the banquet hall doors, drenched in heavy perfume that couldn't quite mask the scent underneath—something floral, cloying, familiar in a way that made my stomach twist. Noah buried his face in her neck and breathed one word loud enough for the entire hall to hear: "Mate."

The crowd erupted. Cheers, applause, the sharp whistle of allied Alphas celebrating a fated bond. Someone near the front called out congratulations. Alison Kelly—Noah's mother—smiled from her seat at the high table, her eyes sliding over me like I was a stain on the floor that would be cleaned up later.

No one moved to help me.

I stayed on my knees for three seconds. Maybe four. Long enough to register the cold marble, the torn hem of the gown I'd spent weeks choosing, the way my hands were shaking. Long enough to understand that this was the moment Noah had been waiting for all along. Seven years of "I can't mark you until your wolf awakens" had been a lie to keep me useful. A placeholder. Insurance.

I pushed myself upright.

My legs felt like they belonged to someone else, but they held. I smoothed the torn fabric of my skirt with hands that wouldn't stop trembling and lifted my chin. Alison's smile widened. An elder near the door whispered something to his companion, and they both laughed.

I walked.

Not toward the servant's exit in the back where packless wolves were supposed to slink away. Toward the front doors. The main entrance. The same doors Lola had walked through ten minutes ago to destroy my life. Every step felt like wading through deep water, but I kept my spine straight and my eyes forward. The crowd parted. Some looked away. Others stared.

Behind me, Noah's voice rose above the noise, rough with his wolf's satisfaction: "She's perfect."

I reached the doors. Pushed them open. The night air hit my face, cool and sharp, carrying the scent of pine and distant rain. I stepped through and kept walking, down the wide stone steps, across the gravel drive, past the line of expensive cars that belonged to visiting Alphas. My heels crunched on gravel. Then dirt. Then forest floor.

I didn't stop until the lights from the banquet hall disappeared behind the trees.

The forest was dark. Quiet. I stumbled over a root and caught myself against a tree trunk, bark rough under my palm. My chest ached—not the sharp tear of the bond breaking, but something deeper, older. Seven years. I'd given him seven years. Believed him when he said my wolf would awaken. Believed him when he said he was waiting for me.

I'd memorized his tactical schedules. Learned the pack's patrol routes. Sat through council meetings and smiled at visiting Alphas and played the role of future Luna even without a mark. I'd made myself indispensable because I thought that was how you earned a bond.

And tonight, the moment his fated mate walked through the door, he'd thrown me away like I was nothing.

I pushed off the tree and kept walking. I didn't know where I was going. Didn't care. Just needed to move, to put distance between myself and the hall where I'd been publicly humiliated. The forest thickened. Moonlight filtered through the canopy in pale strips. Somewhere in the distance, music drifted on the wind—not from Noah's banquet, but something else. Closer.

I broke through the tree line into a clearing.

Lights. Lanterns strung between trees. A gathering of wolves in formal clothes, glasses of champagne catching the glow. A Mate Ceremony. I'd crossed into Silverfang territory without realizing.

And then the scent hit me.

Cedarwood and night rain. So strong it felt like a fist closing around my lungs. I staggered, grabbed the nearest tree for balance. Inside my chest—in the dead space where my wolf should have been—something stirred. Not my wolf. Not yet. But a flicker. A pulse. Like a heartbeat in a room I thought was empty.

Across the clearing, a man froze mid-conversation. Tall. Broad-shouldered. His aura rippled outward like a shockwave, and the wolves around him stepped back without thinking. He turned.

Gold eyes locked on mine.

He crossed the clearing in three strides, the crowd parting like water. Stopped two feet away. Tilted his head and scented me deliberately, nostrils flaring. His wolf was right there, just under his skin, and I could feel the weight of it pressing against my senses.

"Mate," he said.

His voice was deep. Rough. It reverberated through my bones like a command I couldn't disobey.

I shook my head. Took a step back. "No."

"You scent like honeysuckle and thunderstorm," he said quietly. "And your wolf knows me."

"I don't have a wolf." My voice cracked. "And I just had a bond ripped out of my chest an hour ago. I can't—"

He didn't move. Didn't reach for me. Just stood there, gold eyes steady, and said, "Then run."

I ran.

Back into the trees, heart pounding, the scent of cedarwood and night rain chasing me like a promise I couldn't afford to believe.
