My Alpha Rejected Me to Pay Her Blood-Debt Chapter 1

The fire started at 9:47 PM, and by 9:49 I was screaming Apollo's name through smoke so thick I couldn't see my own hands.

I'd been standing near the back wall of the harbor lodge when the first explosion hit—something in the kitchen, maybe propane, the kind of sound that doesn't register as danger until the windows blow out. The crowd scattered. I turned toward the main exit and saw flames already crawling up the doorframe, spreading faster than anything natural. Someone shoved past me. A beam cracked overhead.

"Apollo!" My voice tore raw. The mate bond pulsed once, sharp and certain—he was close, maybe twenty feet ahead through the smoke. Relief flooded me. He'd come back. He always came back.

Then I saw him.

He was framed in the archway leading to the side corridor, backlit by cleaner air. His arms were wrapped around Anastasia Moore. Her face was buried in his chest. His hand cradled the back of her head like she was something precious, something that couldn't be allowed to break.

I watched him turn his back on me and carry her toward the exit.

The bond didn't scream. It flinched. A sharp, cold recoil that started at the mark on my neck and spread down through my ribs, like my body understood before my brain could catch up. He chose. Right there, with me screaming his name, he chose.

A support beam collapsed ten feet to my left. Sparks exploded across the floor. I stopped screaming and started moving.

There was a service door near the kitchen—I'd used it a dozen times hauling supplies. I crawled toward it on my hands and knees, the heat peeling skin off my forearms where my sleeves had burned through. My wolf stirred once, a weak flicker, then went silent again. She'd been quiet for months. I didn't have time to wonder why she wasn't helping now.

The door was jammed. I kicked it twice, three times. On the fourth kick it gave, and I fell through onto wet sand, my lungs seizing as I dragged in air that didn't taste like smoke.

Behind me, the lodge groaned and folded inward. Flames climbed into the night sky. I lay there on the beach, burns screaming across my arms and ribs, and watched it collapse.

The bond went quiet. Not severed—just empty, like he'd walked out of range or stopped paying attention. I pressed my hand to the mark on my neck. It was still warm. Still there.

I wished it wasn't.

---

The pack healer's quarters smelled like antiseptic and wolfsbane salve. They'd brought me in after someone found me on the beach—I didn't remember who. The healer wrapped my burns in silence, her hands efficient but not gentle. No one had come to check on me. Not Apollo. Not anyone.

I was lying on the cot, staring at the ceiling, when I heard voices in the next room. The walls here were thin. I recognized Apollo's voice first, low and steady. Then Anastasia's, softer.

"You're sure this will work?" Anastasia asked.

"Stephen agreed to the terms." Apollo's voice. Calm. Businesslike. "He'll take her as substitute payment for your blood-debt. The rejection ceremony is set for tomorrow night."

I stopped breathing.

"I hate that it has to be this way," Anastasia murmured.

There was a pause. Then Apollo said, "It's the only way to keep you safe."

I heard the soft clink of glass. Through the crack in the door, I saw Apollo press a small vial into Anastasia's hands. The liquid inside glowed faint blue—deep-sea wolfsbane extract, the kind that took six hours of free-diving through silver-laced Pacific wreckage to harvest. I'd nearly died getting that for him three months ago. My ribs still ached when the weather turned cold.

He was giving it to her.

My wolf stirred. Not in grief. In something colder. She didn't whimper. She watched.

I lay there until they left, cataloging every word. Substitute payment. Rejection ceremony. Tomorrow night. I didn't cry. I didn't move. I just stared at the vial's afterimage burned into my vision and understood, finally, what I'd been to him.

Currency.

---

The ceremonial platform stood in the center of Driftwood's main clearing, and the entire pack had gathered to watch. I stood at the base of the steps, my burned arms wrapped in loose bandages, and waited.

Apollo stood above me in full Alpha regalia. His voice carried across the clearing, steady and formal.

"I, Apollo Webb, Alpha of the Driftwood Pack, reject you, Grace Campbell, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold.

Not burning. Not tearing. Just cold—the kind of cold that comes when something living is removed and all that's left is the empty space where it used to be. My wolf didn't howl. She didn't rage. She just stopped, a silence more absolute than any pain I'd ever felt.

I stood there in front of three hundred pack members and felt the bond die.

Apollo's voice finished the vow. The crowd murmured. Someone shifted uncomfortably.

I turned to the pack healer standing at the edge of the platform.

"I'll need my harvesting equipment returned to me before I leave," I said. My voice carried clear across the clearing. "The wolfsbane collection records are mine. I'll be taking them."

The healer blinked. "The records—"

"Are mine," I repeated. "I'm the only one who knows where the deep-sea sites are. If Apollo wants to keep supplying the pack's medicinal stores, he'll need to find someone else willing to free-dive through silver water."

I didn't look at Apollo. I didn't look at anyone.

I walked off the platform and didn't stop walking until I reached the healer's quarters to collect my things.

---

The transport vehicle smelled like old leather and fear. Two guards sat in the front seat. I sat in the back with my silver compass in one hand and the wolfsbane records in the other—a leather-bound journal containing three years of dive coordinates, tide schedules, and extraction protocols that no one else in Driftwood had bothered to learn.

Through the window, I watched the Driftwood territory boundary disappear behind us. The forests thinned. The road turned north toward Ironmaw.

My wolf sent one pulse through the silence. Not despair. Not grief. Something stripped down and forward-facing, something that tasted like salt water and cold air.

She wasn't gone.

She was waiting.
