I Raised Another Woman's Son While My Husband Stole My Fortune Chapter 1

Three years after the accident, I finally learned the truth. The husband I trusted, the son I raised, the family I protected—none of them had ever truly been mine. Every moment of the life I'd lived since waking up had been built on the biggest lie of all.

……

"I don't know who you are."

The man sitting beside my hospital bed didn't flinch. He just tightened his grip on my fingers.

"I'm Nathan," he said. "Your husband."

I stared at the white ceiling, trying to pull a single memory through the fog in my brain. Nothing came. The machines next to my bed beeped in a steady, mocking rhythm.

"Why don't I remember you?" I asked.

"You hit your head." He leaned forward, his eyes bloodshot. "The doctors said the swelling caused severe amnesia. It might be permanent."

"Permanent?" Panic flared in my chest. "I don't even know my own name."

"You're Evelyn," he said softly. "And we have a son."

"A son?"

Nathan nodded, his voice thick with emotion. "Mark. He's three years old, and he's waiting for you to come home."

"My family?" I asked, my throat dry. "Did they call my parents?"

His expression shattered. He looked down at the linoleum floor.

"They were in the car with you, Evelyn. They didn't make it."

Tears I didn't understand spilled over my cheeks. I had no memories of the people I was mourning. I only had the man holding my hand.

"I have no one," I whispered.

"You have me." Nathan kissed my knuckles. "It's just the three of us now. I'll take care of you. I swear it."

"This coffee is lukewarm, Evelyn."

Margaret shoved the porcelain cup across the granite island. The dark liquid sloshed over the rim, staining the white counter.

I grabbed a towel and wiped up the mess. "I'll brew a fresh pot, Margaret."

"Don't bother." My mother-in-law adjusted her pearl necklace. "If you haven't figured out a simple coffee machine in three years, another attempt won't help."

I kept my eyes on the damp towel. "The machine was acting up this morning. I did my best."

"Your best is rarely sufficient." She tapped her manicured fingernails against the granite. "I don't know why my son puts up with this. A wife who can't cook, can't clean, and contributes absolutely nothing to the household."

"I take care of Mark," I replied, keeping my tone even.

Margaret sneered. "You pack his lunches. Barely an accomplishment."

Heavy footsteps sounded on the hardwood stairs.

Nathan walked into the kitchen, knotting his silk tie. He stepped between me and his mother, a physical shield against her sharp tongue.

"Leave her alone, Mom," he warned.

Margaret rolled her eyes. "I simply asked for a hot cup of coffee, Nathan. Is that too much to expect from the woman of the house?"

"Evelyn is still recovering." He placed a firm hand on my waist. "She doesn't need your nagging."

"Recovering?" Margaret scoffed. "It's been three years since the accident. She's perfectly fine. She just likes playing the invalid so she doesn't have to work."

Nathan's jaw hardened. "Enough."

"She needs to get a job," Margaret pressed. "Or at least join a charity board. She sits in this house all day like a prisoner."

"She stays home because I want her safe. End of discussion."

He turned to me, his harsh expression instantly softening. He brushed a stray strand of hair behind my ear.

"Don't listen to her, Evie. You know how much I appreciate everything you do for Mark and me."

I managed a small smile. "I know. Thank you for defending me."

"Always." He kissed my forehead. "I have back-to-back meetings today. Rest. Don't push yourself."

"Have a good day at work," I replied.

He grabbed his briefcase and headed for the garage. Margaret huffed, snatched her purse, and followed him out to head to her country club.

Silence settled over the kitchen.

I tossed the dirty towel into the sink. The house always felt entirely too large when they left.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Rosa, our nanny and housekeeper, hurried into the kitchen. Her apron was covered in flour, and she held a wrapped square box.

"What is it, Rosa?"

"Mark left this on the entryway table. It's the retirement gift for his science teacher. He needs it before second period."

I checked the wall clock. Eight-thirty.

"Can you run it over to the school?" I asked.

Rosa shook her head frantically. "Impossible. I have the dough rising for the rolls, and the roast for tonight's family dinner needs to go in the oven in ten minutes. If I leave now, the whole meal will be ruined."

"Call a courier?" I suggested.

"They won't arrive in time." Rosa looked distressed. "Mark was so excited to give Mr. Davis that watch."

I stared at the small box.

For three years, I hadn't left the neighborhood alone. Nathan always drove me to appointments. Rosa took Mark to school and ran the errands. The outside world felt like a massive, unpredictable void.

But Mark had spent weeks picking out that gift. He would be crushed if he showed up empty-handed.

"I'll take it," I said.

Rosa blinked. "Are you sure? Mr. Carter usually prefers you stay in the house."

"It's just four blocks away." I grabbed my coat from the hook. "I can walk there and be back in twenty minutes. Nathan won't even know."

I snatched the box from her hands before my courage could evaporate.

***

The autumn wind bit at my cheeks the second I stepped off the porch.

I pulled my coat tighter around my ribs. A strange, fluttering energy stirred in my chest. No driver. No Nathan holding my elbow. Just me, navigating the cracked sidewalks of our suburban street.

A neighbor watering her lawn waved at me. I offered a stiff nod, quickening my pace.

Cars sped past on the main road. The noise made my pulse drum against my throat. I kept my gaze fixed straight ahead, tracking the red brick building of the elementary school in the distance.

Why was I so nervous? I was a grown woman running a simple errand.

Yet, every shadow seemed to stretch toward me. Every passing face felt like a threat.

I reached the wrought-iron gates of the school. A cluster of parents lingered near the entrance, chatting over paper coffee cups.

I slipped past them, heading for the main office doors.

"Excuse me."

A tall man stepped directly into my path, blocking the walkway.

I halted, clutching the wrapped box to my chest. "Yes?"

He didn't move. He wore a dark trench coat, his collar turned up against the wind. Rough stubble lined his jaw, and a jagged scar cut through his left eyebrow.

He stared at me with an intensity that made my stomach drop.

"Can I help you?" I asked, taking a half-step back.

"You're alive." His voice was a gravelly rasp.

I frowned. "I'm sorry, you must have me confused with someone else."

I tried to sidestep him. He shifted, blocking me again.

Panic spiked in my veins. "Move out of my way, please."

"Three years," he muttered, his eyes raking over my face. "Three goddamn years we've been tearing the city apart."

"I don't know you." I glanced around, hoping one of the other parents would notice us. They were completely absorbed in their own conversations.

"Where have you been?" he demanded, taking a step closer.

"Back away from me," I warned, my voice shaking. "I'll scream. The school security guard is right inside those doors."

"Go ahead and scream," the man challenged, his tone dropping dangerously low. "Let them call the police. I'd love to explain to the cops why my fiancée has been missing for thirty-six months."

"Fiancée?" My brain scrambled to process the word. "You're insane."

The man reached into his coat pocket.

I flinched, bracing for a weapon.

Instead, he pulled out a crumpled, faded photograph. He held it up.

My lungs froze.

The picture showed two people laughing on a boat. The woman in the photo had my face. My eyes. My smile. She wore a diamond ring on her left hand.

But the man holding her wasn't Nathan.

It was the stranger standing right in front of me.

"Evelyn Sterling?" he asked softly.

I shook my head, my hands trembling so hard the box nearly slipped from my grip. "My name is Evelyn Carter."

A bitter laugh escaped his lips. "Carter? Is that what he's calling himself now?"

"Who?"

"The man who kidnapped you."

The street noise faded into a dull ringing in my ears. "My husband didn't kidnap me."

The stranger stepped closer, closing the distance between us. "He's not your husband, Evie. And we finally found you."
