The auction hall buzzed with excitement as pack members gathered for the monthly Silvermoon Pack auction. I sat beside Hudson, my hand resting protectively over my swollen belly, trying to ignore the life-sized anatomical model he'd insisted on bringing to our den last week. The bidding had been going on for nearly an hour, but Hudson's attention had been fixed on one particular lot - a collection of vintage medical equipment from an old pack healer's estate. "Fifty thousand," Hudson called out, his voice cutting through the murmurs of the crowd. I grabbed his arm, whispering urgently, "Hudson, please. That's too much. We can't afford this." He shook me off without even looking at me. "It's a necessary investment for the pack's medical training. You wouldn't understand." "Forty-eight thousand going once," the auctioneer announced. "Do I hear fifty thousand?" "Going twice..." "Sixty thousand!" Hudson shouted, standing up now, his eyes gleaming with an intensity that made my stomach clench.

We can't afford this."

He shook me off without even looking at me. "It's a necessary investment for the pack's medical training. You wouldn't understand."

"Forty-eight thousand going once," the auctioneer announced. "Do I hear fifty thousand?"

"Going twice..."

"Sixty thousand!" Hudson shouted, standing up now, his eyes gleaming with an intensity that made my stomach clench.

The room fell silent. Even the auctioneer seemed stunned. "Sixty thousand dollars for the vintage medical equipment collection. Going once... going twice... Sold to Hudson Black!"

Applause broke out, but I couldn't join in. My hands trembled as I realized what had just happened. Sixty thousand dollars - nearly all of our savings - spent on equipment for his obsession.

Hudson turned to me, expecting praise, but saw only horror on my face. "Jennifer, don't you see? This will revolutionize pack healing. The model needs proper equipment to be effective."

I felt dozens of eyes on us, heard the whispers already starting. "Did you see how much he spent?" "What does Jennifer think?" "Isn't she pregnant with his pup?"

From the back of the hall, I caught Samuel's gaze. His expression was carefully neutral, but I could see the concern in his eyes. He'd been my Beta assistant for years, and sometimes I wondered if he was the only one who truly saw what was happening to me.

Something inside me snapped. I stood up, ignoring Hudson's attempt to pull me back down.

"I need to say something," I announced, my voice stronger than I expected.

Hudson tried to laugh it off. "She's just emotional from the pregnancy hormones. Aren't you, sweetheart?"

I pulled away from him and walked toward the auctioneer's microphone. The room hushed as I took my place at the center of attention.

"No," I said clearly. "This isn't about hormones. This is about me announcing my intention to reject our mate bond."

Gasps echoed through the hall. Hudson's face drained of color.

"Jennifer," he hissed, grabbing my arm. "You're making a scene."

I pulled free and continued, "I will be requesting a formal pack council hearing to reject Hudson Black as my mate."

Hudson tried to reach for the microphone, but I stepped away. "This is ridiculous. She needs medical attention. Pregnancy brain."

Vera Black appeared at his side, her hand possessively on his arm. "I think Hudson's right. Jennifer, you're obviously distressed. Maybe you should see Dr. Cross?"

"This isn't about distress," I replied, my voice steady despite my racing heart. "This is about a mate who would rather spend sixty thousand dollars on medical equipment than support his pregnant mate."

The auction hall erupted in chaos. Some pack members looked shocked, others sympathetic. A few whispered behind their hands, already spreading the news.

That evening, our den was filled with the sound of Hudson moving his equipment around the anatomical model he'd positioned in the center of our living space.

"You're overreacting," he said, not bothering to look at me as he arranged scalpels on a metal tray. "The pack needs this. I'm training to be a better Alpha."

I sat on our mating bed, watching him work. "And what about our pup? What about me?"

"You should be grateful," he replied, holding up a bone saw. "Not all Lunas have mates who care so deeply about pack welfare."

"This isn't about pack welfare," I said quietly. "This is about your obsession."

Hudson finally looked at me, his eyes cold. "The Moon Goddess blessed our union. You can't just throw that away because of some temporary emotional distress."

I didn't respond. There was nothing left to say.

Later that night, I lay alone in our bed while Hudson slept on the floor beside his precious model. The mate bond between us felt stretched thin, ready to snap.

The next morning, Samuel arrived at our den with some pack documents that needed review.

"Jennifer?" he called softly when he saw me sitting alone, a small suitcase beside me.

"I'm packing," I said simply. "The rejection hearing is in three days."

Samuel nodded, his eyes meeting mine with quiet understanding. "I'll support you, whatever you decide."

As I folded another blouse into my suitcase, I felt the weight of my decision settle over me. There was no turning back now.

I stared at the financial records spread across my kitchen table, my fingers trembling as I traced the columns of numbers. Three years. Three years since I'd forgiven Oliver for his affair with that rogue she-wolf, Summer Wilson. Three years of rebuilding our mate bond, of raising our daughter Hope, of believing we'd moved past his betrayal. And now this. "Large withdrawals," I whispered, circling the figures with my pen. "Every month for... two years." The amounts were substantial—more than what we spent on pack supplies. More than what we allocated for Hope's education. The destination was always listed as "security expenses," but the pattern was too regular, too consistent.
