After My Mate Let Our Daughter Die, I Left Him Chapter 1

The music stopped at 8:40, and the doors of the Shadowmere hall opened, and my mate walked in fat and glowing.

That was the first thing my body understood. Not his face. His skin.

Five years of mind-link messages about frozen frontier nights, about rations and rogue teeth and a wound in his side that wouldn't close. Five years of me eating half my bowl so Lilliana could have the rest. And there he was under the firelight, Alpha Tristan of Shadowmere, my fated mate, with a clean jaw and a heavy coat and not one scar on him.

The mark on my neck went hot, then strange, then quiet. Like a door closing in an empty room.

"Mama." Lilliana's hand tightened in mine. Four years old, small as a two-year-old, her heartbeat a fast little bird under her ribs. "Is that him?"

"That's him, baby."

I took a step. That's when I smelled it — someone else layered all over him, a heavy floral perfume soaked into his collar, into his cuffs, into the hollow of his throat where my scent should have been. Years of it. It wasn't one night. It was a life.

Kendra Jenkins came through the doors behind him in a gown the color of wine, hand curled through his arm like she'd been holding it for a decade. A little girl trailed her, glossy-haired, chin up. The pack roared and closed around them, wolves pushing forward with cups raised, and the crowd swallowed my mate whole before I could get within twenty feet.

Something behind my ribs woke up and pushed. Not a voice. Just heat.

I held on to my daughter's hand and I waited. I had gotten very good at waiting.

The toast came at nine. Garrett, Tristan's Beta — the same Beta who had relayed every fake message to me for five years, who used to lower his eyes when he did it — lifted his glass and called it a homecoming.

And Kendra fell.

She went down two feet from my daughter, one hand flying to her ankle, a cry sliding out of her that was pitched perfectly to carry. "Oh — oh, my leg—"

"She pushed her!" Aubree's voice cut across the hall, clear and confident and rehearsed. Her finger came up and pointed straight at Lilliana. "That one. She pushed my mom."

The hall went silent. Two hundred wolves, and not one of them breathed.

Lilliana looked up at me. She hadn't moved. She hadn't been within reach of Kendra at all, and every wolf standing near us knew it, and every one of them looked at the floor.

Tristan turned.

His eyes found his daughter for the first time in her life. I watched it happen. I watched him look at that small pale face, and there was nothing in him — no recognition, no question, not even curiosity. Just cold irritation, the way you look at a stain on your good coat.

He started forward, and his aura came off him like heat off asphalt. Wolves dropped to their knees in a wave. My spine bent before I told it to.

He took something from his belt. A collar. Thin, braided, silver.

"Tristan—" I shoved off my own knees. "She's four. She's mine. She's—"

A body stepped in front of me. Then another. Delta shoulders, backs of heads, the whole pack becoming a wall between me and my child.

I heard the clasp click.

Lilliana didn't scream. She never screamed; I'd taught her not to. She made a small wet sound, and the smell of burning hit the air — sweet and awful, a smell I will carry until I die.

"Kneel," Tristan said, and he put the Alpha tone in it, full and crushing, on a four-year-old.

She knelt instantly. She trusted him. That's what breaks me, even now. She had never been given a reason to fear a father, so she went down onto the stone at once, obedient, her hands folded, silver eating into her throat.

Then her body locked. Her heels drummed the floor.

I hit the wolf in front of me hard enough to feel his rib go, clawed through the next one, and got to her as she went over sideways.

"Healer!" I had her against my chest. The collar came off in my hands and took skin with it and I didn't care, I threw it across the floor. "HEALER — her heart, she has a bad heart, somebody—"

Nobody moved.

Across the hall, Kendra sat on a chair with her ankle propped up and three healers crouched around a scratch you could have covered with a thumb. Tristan's order. Every healer to the Luna's side.

Lilliana's fingers curled once in my sleeve. Her mouth moved. No sound came.

"Look at me, baby. Mama's here. Mama's right here."

Her heart stopped at 9:22. I felt it stop, the way you feel a clock stop in a quiet house.

I looked up. Tristan's back was already to us. He was walking toward Kendra.

The enforcers came for me in the corridor an hour later, and they took her out of my arms, and they went down to the basement and broke everything she had ever touched. Her cup. Her flat pillow. The pressed flowers in the tin.

They didn't check my hands. I had already torn one lock of her hair loose and pushed it into the hem of my dress, and I sat on the cold floor with a needle from the kitchen and sewed it shut, stitch by stitch, while behind the wall the music started up again and Kendra laughed.
