After His Mistress Claimed Pregnancy, I Took His Pack

The Black Moon pack house blazed with light on New Year's Eve, every chandelier burning like a constellation brought down to earth. I stood in the corner where the glow didn't quite reach, my back against the cold wall, watching the pack celebrate in a ballroom that had never felt like home. My grandmother's voice cut through the music before I saw her. "Ruby. Ruby!" Sharp. Impatient. The way she'd said my name for as long as I could remember—like it tasted bitter on her tongue. I turned. She stood near the refreshment table with my uncle Derek, her face pinched with that familiar expression of disappointment she wore whenever she looked at me. Derek's smile was worse—slick and satisfied, like he'd just won something.

After His Mistress Claimed Pregnancy, I Took His Pack Chapter 1

"Don't just stand there like a shadow," my grandmother snapped. "Make yourself useful for once. The Alphas' glasses need refilling."

Around us, pack members glanced over with that particular blend of pity and contempt reserved for Omegas who couldn't even shift properly. Wolfless, they whispered. Broken. I felt the weight of every stare like stones in my pockets.

My hand drifted to my neck—the unmarked side, the one that had never borne anyone's claim. The gesture was automatic now, a tell I couldn't quite break. The legal document tucked inside my jacket pressed against my ribs with every breath, a secret that felt heavier than paper had any right to be.

"Of course," I said quietly. I always said of course.

Derek laughed, the sound oily and self-satisfied. "Look at her, Mother. Twenty-six years old and still playing servant. Some wolves are just born to kneel."

I picked up the wine bottle with steady hands and began moving through the crowd. The pack parted around me the way water parts around a stone—not with respect, but with the casual indifference given to things beneath notice.

That's when the energy in the room shifted.

The main doors opened, and Zhuri Boyd made her entrance.

My cousin had always known how to command attention. Tonight she wore it like a second skin—a emerald dress that caught every light, her Beta aura radiating confidence as she glided into the ballroom. But it wasn't Zhuri alone that made the crowd go silent.

Marcus Mendoza walked beside her, his arm casually linked with hers.

My mate. My husband in name only. The Alpha whose mark I'd never been allowed to bear, whose indifference had carved out everything soft inside me and left only the hard, aching parts behind.

He looked exactly as he always did—commanding, untouchable, his Alpha presence filling the room like a storm front. He didn't glance my direction. He never did.

Zhuri's eyes found mine across the ballroom, and her smile sharpened.

She steered Marcus directly toward me, her heels clicking against the marble floor with the precise rhythm of someone who'd rehearsed this moment. When they reached the space where I stood, Zhuri's hand—the one not draped possessively over Marcus's arm—swept out in a careless gesture that sent a wine glass tumbling from a nearby table.

Red wine exploded across the white marble at my feet, spreading like blood.

"Oh," Zhuri said, her voice honey-sweet and sharp as a blade. "How clumsy of me. Ruby, darling, would you mind?"

The ballroom had gone quiet. Every wolf in the room was watching now, waiting to see what the Omega would do. What she always did.

Marcus looked down at the spreading stain, then at me. His Alpha tone rolled out—lazy, bored, absolute. "Clean it up."

Three words. That's all it took for him to remind the entire pack exactly what I was to him. Not his mate. Not his Luna. Just another Omega to order around.

I stared at the wine spreading across the floor and thought about another kind of blood. The blood I'd lost six months ago, alone in a pack house bedroom while Marcus marked Sasha Clark in his office downstairs. The pup I'd carried for barely eight weeks before Sasha's little gift—wolfsbane slipped into my morning tea—had torn that future away from me.

I thought about Benedict. About his gentle hands and his absolute faith that I was stronger than anyone believed. About the blood he'd given to save the man now standing over me, commanding me to kneel.

"No," I said.

The word dropped into the silence like a stone into still water.

Zhuri's smile faltered. Marcus's eyes sharpened, finally—finally—focusing on me with something other than indifference.

"What did you say?" His Alpha tone pressed down harder, a weight designed to force submission.

I straightened slowly, my hand still pressed against the document hidden over my heart. I met his eyes—those cold, dark eyes that had never once looked at me with warmth.

"I said no."

Zhuri recovered first, her laugh brittle and bright. She pressed closer to Marcus, one hand resting deliberately on her flat stomach. "How amusing. Marcus, darling, I suppose I should tell everyone now—I'm pregnant. With your pup."

The ballroom erupted. Gasps. Whispers. My grandmother's delighted crow of triumph.

"Finally," the old woman announced, pushing through the crowd. "A proper heir for the Silverfang Pack. Ruby, you'll leave the pack house immediately. You've embarrassed this family long enough."

Derek nodded eagerly beside her. "It's only right. Step aside for the real Luna."

They were all watching me. Waiting for me to break. To bend. To disappear back into the shadows where Omegas belonged.

I touched my neck again—that unmarked, unclaimed space—and felt something inside me that had been cracked and frozen for six months finally shatter completely.

I looked at Marcus. At Zhuri. At my grandmother and uncle. At every wolf in this ballroom who had spent years teaching me I was nothing.

"No," I said again, and this time my voice didn't shake at all. "I don't think I will."

The scent of pine and mountain air clung to my skin as I stepped into the sprawling neutral-territory lodge. The marble floors echoed beneath my careful steps as I followed the familiar trail of Michael's scent – sandalwood and authority, a commanding presence that had always made my knees weak.
