"We're going to be late, Aria. Move faster!" Dylan snapped, his fingers digging into my wrist as he practically dragged me up the marble steps of the Moonveil Pack House. The grand structure loomed against the evening sky, its windows blazing with light and the sound of laughter spilling from within. "I still don't understand why we need to attend this reunion," I murmured, deliberately keeping my voice soft and submissive—the voice of the unremarkable, docile mate I'd pretended to be for years. "You said you hated these pack gatherings." "Things change," Dylan replied curtly, his eyes not meeting mine. "Besides, Alpha Carter specifically requested everyone from our generation attend. It's just a casual get-together." I nodded meekly, though inwardly, my senses were already on high alert. Something felt wrong. Very wrong. The Coming of Age reunion was typically a simple ceremony for young wolves who had just discovered their inner wolves—not a formal gathering requiring all pack members to dress in their finest attire as Dylan had insisted.

After My Mate Betrayed, I Fought Back Chapter 1

"We're going to be late, Aria. Move faster!" Dylan snapped, his fingers digging into my wrist as he practically dragged me up the marble steps of the Moonveil Pack House. The grand structure loomed against the evening sky, its windows blazing with light and the sound of laughter spilling from within.

"I still don't understand why we need to attend this reunion," I murmured, deliberately keeping my voice soft and submissive—the voice of the unremarkable, docile mate I'd pretended to be for years. "You said you hated these pack gatherings."

"Things change," Dylan replied curtly, his eyes not meeting mine. "Besides, Alpha Carter specifically requested everyone from our generation attend. It's just a casual get-together."

I nodded meekly, though inwardly, my senses were already on high alert. Something felt wrong. Very wrong. The Coming of Age reunion was typically a simple ceremony for young wolves who had just discovered their inner wolves—not a formal gathering requiring all pack members to dress in their finest attire as Dylan had insisted.

As we approached the entrance, I noticed the collection of luxury vehicles lining the circular driveway—sleek sports cars and high-end SUVs that didn't belong to our pack members. Visitors. Important ones.

The moment we stepped into the grand main hall, my wolf stirred uneasily within me. *Something's not right, Aria,* she whispered in my mind. I'd spent years training myself to suppress her powerful presence, to make her seem ordinary and unremarkable to other wolves. Tonight, however, she was restless, prowling beneath my skin.

I inhaled deeply, sorting through the layered scents that hung in the air. Beneath the expected aromas of food, wine, and perfume, I detected something else—anticipation, excitement, and... malice. The scent of a trap.

Dylan's grip on my wrist suddenly loosened as we entered the crowded hall. His eyes darted around until they locked on something—or someone—across the room. A small, satisfied smile curved his lips.

"I need a drink," he announced abruptly. "Wait here."

Before I could respond, he was gone, weaving through the crowd with purpose. I watched him approach a small group of wolves near the grand staircase, noting how his shoulders straightened and his chin lifted—a man about to claim a prize.

The crowd around me suddenly quieted, conversations tapering off into whispers. I felt dozens of eyes turn in my direction, a mixture of pity, anticipation, and cruel amusement in their gazes.

"Aria Blackwood," a female voice rang out, clear and commanding.

The crowd parted like water, revealing a statuesque woman in a skintight silver dress that matched her perfectly styled platinum hair. Madison Sterling, daughter of Beta Richard Sterling and now Luna of the neighboring Silverfang Pack. Her mate, Alpha Gideon Sterling, was nowhere to be seen.

Beside her stood Dylan, his face a mask of cold indifference as he gazed at me—his mate of five years.

"I've waited for this moment for a very long time," Madison continued, her voice carrying throughout the now-silent hall. "I demand that you reject Dylan Blackwood as your mate, effective immediately."

My breath caught in my throat, not from shock—I'd suspected Dylan's infidelity for months—but from the public nature of this ambush. This wasn't a spontaneous confrontation; this was a carefully orchestrated humiliation.

"Madison and I are true mates," Dylan announced, his voice stronger and more confident than I'd ever heard it. "The Moon Goddess made a mistake when she paired me with you. I've known it for years, but now I'm finally brave enough to correct it."

I felt it then—the sharp, searing pain of our mate bond shattering. Not from his words, but from the absolute betrayal they represented. Five years of my life, my cover, my mission—all jeopardized for this theatrical display of cruelty.

The room seemed to hold its collective breath, waiting for my reaction—tears, pleading, collapse. They expected the weak, unremarkable Aria they thought they knew.

But as I stood there, feeling the fragments of my mate bond dissolve, I realized something else was breaking free—the chains I'd placed on my true self.

Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across a hundred faces I didn't recognize and a dozen I did. Women in gowns that cost more than cars. Men in tuxedos that fit like they were born wearing them. Waiters gliding between clusters of conversation with trays of champagne so pale it looked like liquid gold. Six years ago, I would have been one of those waiters. I took a glass from a passing tray and didn't drink it. My steel-gray gown was custom Valentino, fitted so precisely it felt like armor. It cost more than my entire first-year scholarship at Columbia.
