Chapter 2

They didn't take me to a hospital.

They took me back to the basement.

I sat on the concrete floor for a long time after the locks clicked shut. My uniform was stiff with dried blood. Three darts had gone deep — one in my left forearm, one just below my shoulder blade, one in the meat of my side. I pulled them out myself, one by one, using the small first-aid kit Derek had left years ago. A gesture of care, I used to think. Now I understood it for what it was: maintenance. You oil the machine so it keeps running.

I wrapped my ribs with the last of the gauze. Taped the cuts closed. Worked slowly, methodically, the way you do when you can't afford to feel anything yet.

When I was done, I sat very still.

I didn't cry. I didn't rage. I just sat there and made three decisions, clean and quiet as stones dropping into water.

I would not beg.

I would not break.

I would try one more time to reach Hayes.

Not with tears. Not with desperation. Just proximity. Patience. The slow, steady pressure of the truth.

I started with the locks that night.

The new ones Derek installed were electronic — a keypad and a secondary deadbolt. But electronic locks have weaknesses, and I had time. I stripped the metal spirals from three of my notebooks and spent the following nights bent over the door in the dark, learning the mechanisms by touch. My fingers memorized the give of each component. I practiced until my knuckles ached.

By the end of the second week, I could open both locks in under three minutes.

I didn't go anywhere. Not yet. I waited for the right night.

It came on a Thursday.

Derek was in Chicago. Kathryn had a charity function in the city — I heard her heels on the floor above, then the distant sound of a car pulling away. The house went quiet. The guards did their rounds on a forty-minute rotation.

I opened the locks at eleven-fifteen.

The upstairs world was dim and still. I moved through it like a ghost, keeping to the walls, avoiding the cameras I'd memorized from my one previous escape. The brightness that had blinded me before was softer now — just nightlights and the ambient glow of the city through tall windows. I paused at each window for half a second. Just to look.

Hayes's room was at the end of the hall.

I eased the door open and slipped inside.

He was asleep, one arm thrown over the stuffed rabbit he always kept beside him. The rabbit I'd made from an unraveled sweater, down in the basement, before they took him away. He didn't know that. He just knew he couldn't sleep without it.

I sat on the edge of his bed. The mattress barely dipped.

I had an apple in my pocket — I'd taken it from the kitchen on my way through. A small knife, the kind you'd use to peel fruit. I turned it in my hands for a moment, then began to peel the apple in one long, slow spiral, the way I imagined mothers did. The way I'd wanted to do, for seven years, in a room with actual light.

I talked to him while I worked. Quietly. Almost to myself.

"I carried you for nine months," I said. "I used to press my hands against my stomach and talk to you. I told you about the sky. I told you what rain smelled like."

The ribbon of apple skin curled to the floor.

"The lullaby you hum — the one you don't know the words to. That's mine. I made it up for you. There are no words. It was just a sound I made so you'd know I was there."

His breathing changed. Not quite awake. Not quite asleep.

"I know what they told you about me. I know you believe it. You're seven years old and the only world you've ever known told you I was dangerous." My voice didn't break. I wouldn't let it. "But I'm your mother. And I have loved you every single day of your life. Even the days you didn't know I existed."

I held out a slice of apple toward him in the dark.

His eyes opened.

For one moment — one terrible, luminous, unbearable moment — something moved across his face. Not fear. Not the rehearsed horror I'd seen at the birthday party. Something older. Something that lived beneath the coaching and the scripts and the years of careful instruction.

Recognition.

Then his hand shot under the pillow.

The alarm was silent. I didn't know that until the door exploded open and Derek was there, filling the frame, his eyes taking in the scene in a single sweep — me, the knife, Hayes already crying, already clutching the blade with both hands, screaming that I'd tried to kill him.

Derek didn't speak.

He crossed the room in four steps, grabbed my arm, and dragged me toward the balcony doors.

I didn't fight. There was nothing left to fight with.

The night air hit me first — cool and clean, the smell of cut grass and distant water. Then the railing caught my hip, and his hands released me, and I was falling.

The stone patio came up fast.

The impact was a white-out. Left arm. Ribs. The side of my head.

I lay still for a long time.

Above me, through the pain, through the spreading dark at the edges of my vision, I could see the sky.

Actual sky. Stars I hadn't seen in eight years, cold and indifferent and impossibly beautiful.

I stared up at them and felt something inside me — some last, stubborn, luminous thing I'd been protecting without even knowing it — quietly go out.

The stars didn't move.

Neither did I.
