Chapter 3

They didn't even give me a cot.

The stable was on the far edge of the upstate property — a long walk from the main house, past the tree line, past the stone wall where the estate's manicured grounds gave way to something wilder. A private doctor came the morning after the fall. He set my arm without speaking, wrapped my ribs, checked my pupils with a penlight. He didn't ask how it happened. He didn't look at my face. He was paid not to.

Afterward, a guard showed me the stall in the back corner. Clean hay. A wool blanket folded over the wooden rail. A bucket of water.

I sat down in the hay and listened to the horses breathe.

The security cameras were mounted in two corners — I spotted them immediately. One covered the entrance. One covered my stall. Someone was watching. Someone was always watching.

I didn't care.

I'd stopped caring about the watching a long time ago. What I cared about was the fact that I could see the sky from the gap above the stable doors. A narrow strip of it, grey and moving, but real. I watched it for hours that first night. Clouds shifting. The faint suggestion of stars behind them.

The stable hands left food on a wooden ledge near the entrance — scraps, mostly. Bread ends. Whatever was left from the main house kitchen. I ate without tasting. I slept in the hay with my cast braced against my side and my good arm wrapped around myself.

My arm healed. My ribs healed. The bruises along my jaw faded from purple to green to yellow to nothing.

I stayed.

Not because I had anywhere to go. Because Hayes was still here. And I was not leaving without him knowing who I was. That was the only thing left. The only thread I hadn't let go of yet.

I told myself that every morning. Standing at the stable doors in the early grey light, looking out at the grounds. I told myself: one more day. One more chance.

It came on a Tuesday afternoon, three weeks after the fall.

I heard his footsteps before I saw him — small, hesitant, the crunch of gravel slowing as he reached the stable entrance. I was sitting in the hay with a book I'd found left behind by one of the hands. I looked up.

Hayes stood in the doorway.

He looked different. Smaller, somehow, without Kathryn beside him. His hands were clasped in front of him and his expression was something I had never seen on his face before — uncertain. Soft at the edges. Almost shy.

"I want to talk to my real mommy," he said.

The words hit me somewhere below the sternum. I felt my whole chest open up like a wound.

I should have been careful. I know that now. I knew it then, in some quiet part of me that had learned to distrust everything. But he was seven years old and he was standing in a doorway looking at me like he was afraid I'd disappear, and I was his mother, and I had not held his hand in longer than I could count.

I stood up. I held out my good hand.

He took it.

We walked through the tree line together, his small fingers wrapped around mine. The afternoon light came through the branches in long gold pieces. I could feel the warmth of him — the specific, particular warmth that I had memorized in the dark of the basement when he was still small enough to hold against my chest.

The trees opened onto the cliffside overlook.

The Hudson Valley spread below us — the river a grey ribbon between steep walls of rock and pine, the sky enormous overhead. Wind came up from the gorge and moved through my hair. I breathed in and felt it: the physical sensation of open space. Of air that didn't belong to anyone. Of a horizon that went on past the edge of what I could see.

For one moment, standing there with Hayes's hand in mine, I felt something I had not felt in eight years.

Freedom. Just the edges of it. Just the shape.

Then Hayes stepped toward the cliff's edge.

I tightened my grip. "Hayes—"

He stumbled. Deliberate. I saw it — the careful placement of his foot, the practiced lurch, the way his body tipped just far enough to be convincing.

He screamed.

The sound of a car engine came from the access road below — already there, already climbing. He'd texted Derek before he ever walked into the stable.

Derek was out of the car before it fully stopped. He crossed the overlook in long, furious strides, grabbed Hayes from the ledge, pulled him close. Then he turned.

His eyes found me.

I was standing two feet from the edge. My good arm at my side. My cast held against my ribs. I hadn't moved.

Derek's face was something I had no word for. Beyond rage. Beyond anything that had a name.

I looked at him. Then I looked at Hayes.

Hayes looked back at me with empty, patient eyes. Waiting. Waiting to see what I would do. Waiting to see if I would beg, or run, or cry. Waiting for the next part of the scene he'd written.

And I felt it go.

Not with a sound. Not with pain. Just a quiet, clean snap — like a thread pulled taut for too long finally giving way.

I almost smiled.

Derek was still moving toward me.

I turned and looked out at the river.
