After He Smashed Our Baby’s Grave, I Planned Revenge Chapter 1

I stood alone in the bridal suite with my fingers on the last bead. Six months of work. Six months of sitting at my kitchen table after dinner, needle moving through silk, eyes burning under the lamp. Every stitch was a promise I made to myself. Every bead was a piece of the future I thought we'd have.

The gown fit perfectly. I'd measured it a hundred times. White silk with lace sleeves and tiny pearls along the bodice. The skirt fell in soft layers. I'd sewn it all by hand because I wanted Dorian to know I could make something beautiful just for him. Something no one else would ever wear.

I touched the mirror. My reflection looked back. Hair pinned up. Makeup done. The woman in the glass looked like a bride.

Downstairs, the guests were seated. I could hear the hum of voices through the floor. My parents were down there somewhere. The flowers in the arrangements were white roses. The same kind I brought to the grave every month. I'd picked them myself.

I smoothed the last wrinkle in the skirt. My hands were shaking a little. Not from nerves. From something else. Something I'd been ignoring for a long time.

The side door opened.

I turned. Dorian walked in. He wasn't alone.

Reese was on his arm. She wore jeans and a leather jacket. Her hair was down. She looked comfortable. She always looked comfortable.

Dorian smiled at me. Easy. Relaxed. Like he was walking into a coffee shop.

"Hey," he said.

I stared at him. At them.

The wedding coordinator froze by the window. Three bridesmaids stood near the door. No one moved.

Dorian glanced around the room like he was checking the weather. Then he looked back at me.

"So," he said. "We need to talk."

I didn't say anything. My hands were still on the skirt.

"Reese and I got married in Vegas," he said. His voice was calm. Matter-of-fact. Like he was telling me he'd changed our dinner reservation. "It was kind of a wild night. We were drunk. But it's legal. So."

Reese smiled. Not big. Just a small curve of her mouth.

I looked at Dorian. At the man I'd spent ten years with. The man I'd forgiven ninety-nine times. The man I'd sewn this dress for.

"I know this is weird timing," Dorian continued. He scratched the back of his neck. "But Reese always wanted to wear a dress like this. Since we were kids. We used to play house and she'd always talk about the white dress. So I was thinking—" He gestured toward me. Toward the gown. "Maybe you could take it off and let her wear it? Just for today. You'd be doing her a huge favor."

Reese didn't say anything. She just stood there with that small smile.

I looked down at the dress. At the beads I'd sewn one by one. At the lace I'd stitched by hand. At the six months of my life I'd poured into silk and thread.

Behind me, one of the bridesmaids made a small sound. Like a gasp that got caught.

Dorian waited. He looked patient. Like he'd asked me to pass the salt.

I stood there for three seconds. Maybe four. The room was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.

Then I reached up and grabbed the neckline of the gown. I pulled.

The fabric ripped. Beads scattered across the floor. The sound was loud in the silent room. I tore the dress off my body and threw it at Dorian's feet. It landed in a heap of white silk and broken thread.

I pulled the engagement ring off my finger. The diamond caught the light. I'd worn it for two years. I threw it at him. It hit his chest and fell to the floor.

"We're done," I said.

My voice didn't shake. It didn't break. It was calm. Steady. Final.

Dorian blinked. "Ella—"

"We're done," I said again.

I walked past him. Past Reese. Past the bridesmaids frozen by the door. I walked out of the bridal suite in my underwear and bare feet. The hallway was empty. My feet were cold on the marble floor.

I didn't look back.

Behind me, I heard nothing. No footsteps. No voice calling my name. Just silence.

I walked down the hall, down the stairs, out the side exit. My car was in the lot. I got in. Started the engine. Drove.

I went to my parents' house. I don't remember the drive. I just remember pulling into the driveway and sitting there with the engine still running.

The front door opened. My mother stood there. She looked at me through the windshield. At my bare shoulders. My ruined makeup. My empty hands.

I got out of the car. Walked up the steps.

She didn't ask any questions. She just stepped aside. Let me in. Closed the door behind me.

My father was sitting at the kitchen table. He looked up when I walked in. His face didn't change. He just looked at me.

I sat down. My mother sat down. The three of us sat there in the kitchen.

No one said anything.

Outside, the sun was bright. Inside, the house was quiet.

I looked at my hands. They were empty. The ring was gone. The dress was gone. Ten years were gone.

I felt nothing.

No. That wasn't true.

I felt something. Something cold and clear and sharp.

I felt done.
