My Husband Bet I’d Crawl Back After Divorce Chapter 1

The lounge smelled like money — cedar and gin and someone's expensive perfume trying too hard. Gold light dripped off the chandeliers and pooled on the black marble table where Aden sat, one arm draped over the back of the booth like he owned the room. He probably did. He owned most rooms now.

I sat across from him in the dress he picked out for me three years ago. He'd said blue brought out my eyes. I hadn't worn it in months, but tonight felt like a night for old things.

"Esme." He said my name the way he always did lately — like a formality, like a word he was tired of using. He slid a folder across the table. It stopped an inch from my hand. "Let's not make this messy."

Dominic Ashford laughed from the next seat, swirling his scotch. He'd been Aden's shadow since business school, the kind of friend who showed up for the wins and vanished before the losses. "Come on, man, at least buy her a drink first."

Nobody else laughed. Somewhere behind Aden, near the bar, Berkley Salazar sat with her legs crossed and her chin tilted just enough to look like she wasn't watching. She was watching. She'd been watching for months.

I opened the folder. Divorce Settlement Agreement. My name typed in black ink beside his. Seven years, reduced to twelve pages and a signature line.

"You're really doing this here," I said. Not a question. My voice came out steady, which surprised me.

"Why not?" Aden leaned back, grinning at Dominic like they were sharing a private joke. "Fifty bucks says she signs and calls me crying by Thursday." He tapped his wrist, the Rolex I'd picked out for our third anniversary. "Actually — make it this. She won't last a week without me."

Dominic whistled low. "Bold."

"Not bold," Aden said, eyes on me now, soft with a cruelty he probably didn't even recognize as cruelty. "Just true."

I looked at him. Really looked. The jaw I used to trace with my thumb. The mouth that used to say my name like it meant something. Seven years of making myself smaller so he could feel bigger — folding my ambition into drawers, my name into an alias, my voice into silence at dinner parties where his opinion was the only one that mattered.

Something in my chest, something that had been smoldering so long I'd forgotten it could still burn, went quiet. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just — out. Like a candle someone finally remembered to blow out.

I picked up the pen.

My hand didn't shake. I signed my name, slow and clean, the way I sign everything. Then I closed the folder and slid it back across the marble.

"There," I said.

Aden blinked. The smirk stayed frozen on his face a second too long. "That's it?"

"That's it."

I stood, took my coat off the back of the booth, and walked out. Nobody said a word. I didn't look back to see their faces, but I heard the silence trailing after me like a held breath.

Outside, the cold hit my face like something honest. I stood on the sidewalk under a streetlamp, watching my breath curl up and disappear, and I pulled out my phone.

One unread message. Months old. I'd never let myself open it before tonight — not because I didn't know what it said, but because I did.

*Harrison Wright: Marry me. Whenever you're ready. I'm not going anywhere.*

I typed one word.

*Yes.*

I hit send before I could talk myself out of it, then stood there a moment longer, watching the city breathe around me, feeling lighter than I had in years.

—

The penthouse was warm when I let myself in, warm and smelling faintly of Berkley's perfume — something floral and expensive, the kind she probably bought specifically because it was different from mine. I heard them before I saw them. On the couch. Her legs tangled with his, my silk robe — the pale gray one, a gift from my mother — slipping off one shoulder.

Berkley looked up first. She didn't move. She smiled, slow and satisfied. "Close the door on your way out."

I didn't answer. I walked past them to the bedroom, pulled one suitcase from the closet, and packed with hands that stayed perfectly steady. Sweaters. Sketchbooks. The framed photo of my parents from Geneva. I didn't need much. I'd never needed much — that was the tragedy of it.

In the kitchen, I slid the ring off my finger. It came free easier than I expected. I set it on the counter, no ceremony, no sound, just gold against granite.

Then I walked out.

A black Maybach idled at the curb, engine humming low against the quiet street. The back door opened before I reached it. Harrison Wright sat inside, dark coat, steady eyes, saying nothing.

He didn't ask what happened. He didn't reach for me.

He just waited until I was seated, closed the door softly behind me, and told the driver to go.
