Chapter 4

The restaurant was the kind of place where people came to sign things that mattered. White tablecloths. Low voices. Waiters who knew not to interrupt.

Helena was already seated when I arrived. She didn't stand. She nodded once toward the chair across from her.

I sat.

She slid a leather portfolio across the table. I opened it. The stock transfer authorization sat on top. Three pages. My name at the bottom of each one, waiting.

"Read it," Helena said. "Every word. I don't care how long it takes."

I read it. The language was clean. Precise. No room for interpretation. On January twenty-fourth, at nine a.m., all shares currently registered under Carter Michael Lawrence would transfer in full to Samantha Jane Morgan. Irrevocable. Immediate. Enforceable under the infidelity forfeiture clause of the prenuptial agreement executed seven years prior.

I turned to the second page. The third. I read the notary statement. The witness line. The date.

When I looked up, Helena was watching me.

"Questions?" she asked.

"No."

"Concerns?"

"No."

She leaned back. Her coffee sat untouched in front of her. "Once you sign this, there's no undoing it. The moment it's filed, the clock starts. He'll have less than seventy-two hours before the transfer executes. If he tries to move assets, liquidate, or transfer shares to a third party, we have an automatic injunction in place. But you need to be sure."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. I felt the pulse there. Steady.

"I'm sure," I said.

Helena nodded. She pulled a pen from her bag. Matte black. Heavy. She set it on the portfolio.

I reached for it.

That's when I heard his voice.

Not loud. Just clear enough to carry across the half-empty room.

"...Amalfi Coast first, then we sail to Santorini. I already booked the suite."

My hand stopped.

I turned my head. Slowly. Like something was pulling it on a string.

Corner table. By the window. Carter in the charcoal sweater I'd given him two Christmases ago. Jazmin across from him in cream cashmere, leaning forward with her elbows on the table. His phone between them. Her hand over his.

He was smiling. The smile he used to give me when he was excited about something. When he wanted me to be excited with him.

Jazmin laughed. She touched the screen. She said something I couldn't hear. He nodded. He turned the phone toward her and zoomed in on something.

"The suite has a private terrace," he said. His voice was warm. Easy. "You can see the water from the bed."

I stared at his hand. The way it rested over hers. Casual. Comfortable. Like it had been there a hundred times before.

The Mediterranean cruise.

Five years. Five anniversaries. Five times he'd said, *Next year, Sam. I promise. When things settle down.*

Things never settled down.

But apparently they'd settled enough for this.

I watched Jazmin lean closer. I watched Carter's thumb move in a small circle over her knuckles. I watched him look at her the way he used to look at me in the Brooklyn storage unit when we were twenty-four and broke and building something we believed in.

I turned back to the table.

Helena was watching me. Her face hadn't changed. She didn't ask if I was all right. She didn't say anything.

I picked up the pen.

I signed the first page. My signature was steady. Careful. The cursive I only used for things I meant to keep.

I turned to the second page. I signed again.

Third page. My hand didn't shake.

I closed the portfolio. I slid it back across the table.

Helena took it. She opened it once, checked each signature, then closed it again. She slipped it into her bag.

"I'll file it tomorrow morning," she said. "Nine a.m. The clock starts the moment it hits the clerk's desk."

I nodded.

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she said, very quietly, "You're going to be fine."

I didn't answer.

I reached for my coffee. It was cold. I drank it anyway.

Behind me, Carter laughed again. Low and easy. The sound of a man who had everything he wanted.

I set the cup down. I opened my wallet. I pulled out two twenties and left them on the table.

"That's too much," Helena said.

"I know," I said.

I stood. I buttoned my coat. I picked up my bag.

I walked toward the door. I passed Carter's table. He didn't look up. He was too busy scrolling through photos of a trip he'd promised me five times and given to someone else.

Jazmin saw me. I know she did. Her eyes flicked up for half a second. Then back down.

I kept walking.

I pushed through the door into the cold January afternoon. The sky was white. The air smelled like snow that hadn't fallen yet.

I stood on the sidewalk. I pressed my thumb against my wrist. I counted to four.

Then I walked to my car. I got in. I closed the door.

I sat there for a long time. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I didn't call anyone.

I just sat.

Then I started the engine. I pulled out into traffic. I drove back to the office.

I worked until midnight.

When I finally left, I stopped in the parking garage. I stood beside my car in the fluorescent silence.

I put my hand on my stomach. Very gently.

"Eliana," I said out loud. Just to hear it. Just to make it real.

Then I got in the car and drove home.

Fourteen days.
