Twenty-one days. That was how long I'd been living inside the office.

The IPO filing was finally done. I'd slept on the leather couch in the corner more nights than I could count. I'd eaten cold takeout at three a.m. I'd watched the sun rise over the Hudson through the floor-to-ceiling glass, my fingers cramping on the keyboard, and I'd told myself it would be worth it.

On Christmas Eve, I finally pushed away from my screen. My back hurt. My eyes burned. The baby—six weeks along, our secret, mine—had been quiet all day, and I rested a hand low on my stomach, just for a second, just to remind myself why I was doing this.

Then I lifted my head and looked around.

My office was wrong.

The long desk by the window—the one Carter had carried in himself, seven years ago, when we moved out of the Brooklyn storage unit—was empty. My monitors, my files, my framed photo of the two of us laughing in front of that first crooked desk lamp. Gone.

In the far corner, a sloppy stack of cardboard boxes. My books. My coat. My spare heels tipped sideways like someone had kicked them in.

A yellow sticky note clung to the bare desk. I knew the handwriting before I read it.

*Jazmin needs the space for gala prep. — C*

I read it twice. Three times.

I didn't move. I pressed my thumb hard against the inside of my wrist and counted to four. The pulse there was steady. Mine. Still mine.

That's when I saw the box.

It sat in the middle of the cleared desk like an offering. White paper. Silver ribbon. A small card balanced on top.

My hand shook a little when I picked it up.

*Merry Christmas—from Carter's office. xo, Jazmin.*

I lifted the lid.

White tissue paper. A glint of porcelain. A small face under a fall of dark curls. A white lace dress. Tiny black shoes. Glass eyes, wide and blue and unblinking.

A doll.

The room slid sideways. For a second I wasn't thirty-one. I was eight. I was crouched on the floor of my father's study, the briefcase open on my lap, and there was a doll inside it that wasn't for me. There was a card inside it that wasn't for my mother. And the whole shape of my life had cracked clean down the middle in the space of one breath.

The same dress. The same curls. The same blue eyes.

She knew. She had to know. Carter knew. He had promised me, years ago, lying in bed with his face against my hair—*never, Sam, not in our house, not ever.*

The first cramp hit me low and sharp, like a wire pulled tight.

I dropped the box.

I got as far as the elevator. I don't remember the ride down. I remember the lobby tile, very white and very cold, and I remember a man's voice saying *ma'am, ma'am,* and a hand on my elbow. A cab driver. He'd come in to use the bathroom. He saw me folded against the wall.

"You need a hospital," he said. He wasn't asking.

I nodded. I think I nodded.

The ER smelled like bleach and old coffee. They wheeled me through fluorescent light. A nurse cut my blouse open. A doctor pressed cold gel low on my stomach and watched a screen with her mouth set in a hard line.

"You're pregnant, Mrs. Lawrence."

"Morgan," I said. My voice came out thin. "Samantha Morgan."

"Ms. Morgan. You're showing signs of threatened preterm contractions. Acute stress response. Have you eaten today?"

I couldn't remember.

"Is there someone we can call?"

I gave her Carter's number. I watched her dial it on the wall phone. I watched her hang up.

"No answer," she said gently. "We'll try again."

They admitted me. They put a band on my wrist with my name on it and a thinner band higher up that monitored a heartbeat that wasn't mine. The room was small. The blinds were closed. Outside, somewhere, the city was lit up in red and green.

I called him.

Once. Twice. Five times. The phone rang and rang and went to voicemail, and his voicemail still said, *Hey, you've reached Carter and Sam,* in the cheerful voice he used for the camera.

I called twelve times. I counted.

Then I opened Instagram.

I don't know why. I think I already knew.

The photo was right at the top of my feed. Tagged by someone from the marketing team. *Christmas Eve done right.*

A rooftop. String lights. Manhattan glittering behind them like a backdrop they'd ordered. Carter in the navy coat I'd given him last winter. Jazmin in red, her head tipped back, laughing. His hand on the small of her back. Low. Easy. Like it lived there.

I stared at his hand.

I didn't cry. I want to be clear about that. I didn't make a sound.

Something inside me—the last small stubborn thing that had still been whispering *maybe, maybe, maybe*—just went quiet. Like a pilot light going out.

The room was very still after that.

At midnight the doctor came back. She checked the monitor. She told me the baby was stable. She told me, carefully, that another episode like this could end the pregnancy.

"You need to remove the stressor," she said. "Whatever it is."

"I will," I said.

She must have heard something in my voice, because she looked at me a long moment before she left.

I lay back. I put my hand on my stomach, very flat, very gentle.

Two decisions. I made them right there, under the humming fluorescent tube, with my husband's hand still resting on another woman's back somewhere fifty blocks south.

I was going to keep this child.

And I was not going to tell a single soul. Not Carter. Not my mother. No one. Not until every last piece was in place and the knife was already through.

They discharged me on the twenty-sixth. I walked out alone, into a cold bright morning, carrying two secrets in the same small body.

I was very calm.

I have never, in my life, been so calm.
