Chapter 5

Jazmin appeared in my doorway at four-thirty on the twenty-third. I didn't look up right away. I finished the sentence I was typing. Then I turned my head.

She was holding a piece of paper. Cream cardstock. Embossed lettering. The kind of thing that cost money to print.

"Carter wanted me to make sure you had a copy," she said. Her voice was light. Pleasant. The tone you'd use with a colleague you barely knew. "Seating chart for tomorrow."

She stepped forward and placed it on my desk. Right on top of the file I'd been working on. Her nails were painted a soft pink. French manicure. Perfect half-moons.

I looked at the paper. Then at her.

She smiled. Not wide. Just enough. "Your name's on the third row," she said. "Great sightlines from there. You'll be able to see everything."

She stood there for one second longer than necessary. Then she turned and walked out. Her heels clicked down the hall. Steady. Confident. The sound of a woman who believed she'd already won.

I looked at the seating chart.

Row one: Board members. Investors. Carter's father.

Row two: Senior directors. Press liaisons. Carter's college roommate.

Row three: Mid-level staff. A few plus-ones. Samantha Morgan.

I folded the paper in half. Then in half again. I opened my desk drawer. The photograph was there. Me and Carter in the Brooklyn storage unit. Both of us twenty-four. Exhausted. Laughing.

I pulled the receipt from my wallet. The one where I'd written her name in careful cursive. *Eliana Morgan.*

I placed it on top of the photograph.

Then I closed the drawer.

I worked until midnight. Then I went home. I laid out my dress. Black. Structured. No embellishments. I polished my shoes. I set my jewelry on the dresser. Small diamond studs. The ones I'd bought myself after our first profitable quarter.

I went to bed at one a.m. I set my alarm for five.

I didn't sleep.

I got to The Plaza at seven-thirty. The ballroom was already half-set. Round tables draped in white linen. Centerpieces of white roses and eucalyptus. A stage at the front with a podium and six chairs arranged in a careful line.

I walked toward the stage. My heels made no sound on the carpet.

Jazmin was already there.

She was sitting in the second chair from the left. The co-founder's chair. The one with the nameplate that still read *Samantha Morgan.*

She was wearing ivory. Custom. Silk and lace. From the same atelier where Carter had bought my wedding dress seven years ago. I recognized the stitching.

She saw me. She didn't stand. She just smiled. That same small, pleasant smile.

"Good morning," she said.

I didn't answer. I looked at the chair. At the nameplate. At her.

She crossed her legs. The silk whispered. "Carter thought it made more sense for me to sit here," she said. "Since I've been handling the investor relations. The optics, you know."

I nodded once. Then I turned and walked toward the side entrance.

That's when I heard his voice.

"Samantha."

I stopped. I didn't turn around.

Carter's footsteps crossed the stage. He came down the stairs. He walked around to face me.

He was wearing the suit I'd helped him pick out two months ago. Navy. Slim cut. The tie I'd given him for his birthday.

He didn't quite look at my eyes. Somewhere near my shoulder.

"Your role today is to sit in the audience," he said. His voice was low. Firm. The voice he used in board meetings when he wanted something settled quickly. "Jazmin is handling stage coordination. She's been the face of the investor outreach. It makes sense for her to be visible."

He paused. He straightened his tie. It was already straight.

"Try not to make this about you," he said.

I looked at him.

I looked at the man who used to carry boxes with me. The man who used to angle the lamp. The man who promised me, once, that we were building something together.

I looked at him for three full seconds.

I didn't say a word.

I smiled. Small. Precise. The kind of smile that doesn't reach anywhere.

Then I turned and walked away.

I heard him exhale behind me. A small sound. Like relief. Or maybe something else.

I walked into the corridor. I pulled my phone from my bag. I made two calls.

The first was to Helena. "Are you close?"

"Ten minutes," she said. "Notary's with me."

"Good."

I hung up.

The second call was to a number I'd saved three days ago. A man answered on the first ring.

"Ms. Morgan."

"Is everything ready?" I asked.

"Yes ma'am. USB loaded. Cued to your signal. Thirty seconds from green light to full display."

"Good," I said. "Wait for my text."

"Understood."

I hung up.

I walked back into the ballroom. It was filling now. People in suits. People with cameras. People who mattered.

I found my seat. Third row. Center. Great sightlines.

I sat down. I folded my hands in my lap. I crossed my ankles.

I waited.

On stage, Jazmin laughed at something Carter said. He leaned toward her. His hand brushed her shoulder.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. I counted my pulse.

Steady.

The lights dimmed. Someone tapped the microphone. The ceremony was about to begin.

I reached into my bag. I felt the edge of the envelope. The one Helena had given me yesterday. The one with my signature on three pages.

I left it where it was.

I looked at the stage. At Carter. At Jazmin. At the nameplate that still read *Samantha Morgan.*

I smiled.

Not for them. For me.

Because in exactly twelve minutes, the world was going to learn what I'd known for three weeks.

I didn't need a seat on that stage.

I was going to own it.
