Chapter 2

"Dump the contents on the table, officer."

Eason’s voice cut through the morning silence of the foyer, sharp and unforgiving.

I stood pinned between two uniformed police officers. The leather tote bag I had grabbed last night dangled from a cop's thick fist. I had barely made it three blocks down the freezing street before the flashing red and blue lights surrounded me, dragging me right back to the nightmare I tried to escape.

"I haven't been in this house since you kicked me out twelve hours ago!" I shouted, struggling against the officer's grip.

"The security footage shows a woman in your coat sneaking back into the west wing at two in the morning," Eason countered.

"I left my coat by the front door!" I argued. "Anyone could have put it on."

The officer upended my bag. Makeup, a wallet, and a heavy velvet pouch tumbled onto the glass coffee table. The pouch spilled open upon impact. A massive blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds caught the chandelier's light, glittering against the dark wood.

Sarah let out a piercing wail. She buried her face against Eason’s chest, her shoulders shaking violently.

"My grandmother's necklace," Sarah sobbed. "Why would you take it, Penny? If you needed money, Eason would have given you a severance."

"I didn't steal it!" I yelled, stepping toward her.

The cop shoved me back by my collarbone.

Eason stared at me, his brow furrowed in utter disgust. "Penny, when did you become this kind of person?"

"You set me up!" I pointed a shaking finger at Sarah. "She shoved that into my bag last night while you were screaming at me!"

"Enough." Eason wrapped a protective arm around Sarah. "You're a thief."

A small hand tugged at Eason’s pant leg. Jasper peered around his father’s knees, glaring at me with a hostility that didn't belong on a five-year-old's face.

"Jasper, tell them," I pleaded, dropping my tone to a soft whisper. "Tell them Mommy wouldn't do this."

Jasper wrinkled his nose. "Sarah Mommy never lies. You're a bad person."

I flinched. The words hit harder than a physical blow. A sharp, dry laugh ripped from my throat. No tears came. Just a hollow, scraping sound that made Eason take a half-step backward.

"You think this is funny?" Uncle Arthur, the family patriarch, slammed his cane against the marble floor. He stepped out from the shadows of the staircase, his face flushed with rage. "You disgrace the Miller family name."

"I am not a Miller anymore," I snapped.

"Then get on your knees and apologize to Sarah before we press charges," Arthur demanded. "Kneel!"

"I will never apologize to the woman sleeping with my husband."

"Arrest her," Eason told the cops, his voice devoid of any warmth.

Sarah peeked over Eason's shoulder, dabbing her dry eyes. "No, please. Do not send Jasper's mother to jail. Just... just make her leave. Permanently."

Eason sneered. "You heard her. Get out. If you ever come near my son or my house again, I will see you in a cell."

The heavy wooden door of the Mathematics Department swung shut behind me.

I sat across from Professor Davis. The man who once called me a generational talent now refused to even meet my eyes. The cold pavement of the university courtyard outside his window offered no comfort.

"I am ready to come back, Professor," I urged, leaning over his cluttered desk. "I still have my old research notes on algebraic topology. I just need a stipend to get started."

Professor Davis adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses. "Penny, you walked away five years ago."

"I had a child. My husband needed me to—"

"Your PhD eligibility expired three years ago," Davis interrupted, his tone flat. "The university purged your file."

"Is there an appeal process?"

"You abandoned your work for a domestic life." He stacked a pile of grading rubrics, avoiding my gaze. "Mathematics requires absolute devotion. You gave yours to a man. There is no place for you here."

I stared at the chalkboard covered in equations I used to solve in my sleep. The numbers blurred together.

"Do you know who took your spot in the fellowship?" Davis asked. "A student who refused to let a wedding ring derail their intellect. The grant money is gone. The department moved on."

"I will write a new proposal. Give me one week."

"No. You are a liability. Academia does not wait for housewives who suddenly change their minds."

I stood up slowly. The chair scraped against the linoleum floor.

"Thank you for your time," I whispered.

I shoved the heavy campus doors open and stepped into the biting afternoon wind.

"He rejected you, didn't he?"

I stopped. Sarah leaned against a stone pillar near the campus gates, twirling a set of Porsche keys around her manicured finger. She wore my favorite cashmere coat.

"Are you stalking me now?" I asked.

Sarah pushed off the pillar and strutted toward me. "I just wanted to see the look on your face when you realized the truth."

"The truth is you are a homewrecker."

Sarah laughed, a high, grating sound that echoed across the empty courtyard. "You have nothing left, Penny. Husband, son, career—they're all mine. You're just a ghost."

"Keep the cheating bastard," I spat. "But I will get my son back."

"With what lawyer?" Sarah mocked. "Eason froze your joint accounts this morning. You do not even have bus fare."

"Why are you doing this?" I asked, my fists clenching. "You already took my husband."

"Because you always looked down on me," Sarah sneered. "You and your genius IQ. You thought you were so much better than the rest of us. Now look at you. Begging for scraps."

I turned my back on her and walked toward the busy intersection. My chest felt hollowed out. A strange buzzing filled my ears, drowning out the city noise.

*You have nothing left.*

I stepped off the curb.

A horn blasted. Tires screeched against the asphalt.

I didn't flinch. I just turned my head toward the massive grille of the delivery truck hurtling toward me.

A hand clamped down on my wrist.

Hard.

A powerful force yanked me backward. He spun us around, placing his own body between me and the roaring vehicle. I slammed into a solid chest. The scent of expensive cedar and sharp winter air enveloped me. The truck tore past, the side mirror grazing his shoulder, but he didn't even flinch.

I blinked, disoriented, staring up at the man holding me.

He wore a bespoke charcoal suit. His jawline was sharp enough to cut glass, and his dark eyes locked onto mine with terrifying intensity. It was the man from the Rolls-Royce last night.

He didn't release my waist. Instead, he pulled me a fraction closer.

"Finally found you, little mathematician," he murmured, his voice a low rumble against my ear.

I stared up into his dark eyes, realizing my nightmare wasn't ending—it was just changing players.
