His Mistress Took My Bedroom, So I Reclaimed the House Chapter 1

Evan promised Vanessa would stay with us for three nights.

I believed him, because after seven years of marriage, I thought our bedroom was the one place he would never hand to another woman.

Then Vanessa looked at the guest suite and said it made her feel unwanted.

Evan turned to me and said, “Let her use our room.”

I asked where I was supposed to sleep.

“The guest room, Natalie. Don't make this difficult.”

That night, Vanessa walked out of my bedroom wearing my silk robe while Evan told me her anxiety was “not about me.”

I stopped arguing.

I said, “Fine.”

By breakfast, I had moved into the downtown penthouse I owned before our marriage.

The housekeeper, chef, and driver followed because their contracts were with me, not Evan.

At six that evening, my husband finally called.

“Why is the house empty?”

I looked around my quiet apartment.

“Because I left.”

"It's only for three nights, Natalie."

Evan dropped two designer suitcases onto the marble floor of my foyer. The sound traveled through the vaulted entryway of the villa I had bought two years before I married him.

I folded my arms. "You said Vanessa was staying at a hotel."

"There was a problem with the reservation." He rubbed the back of his neck and avoided my eyes. "She doesn't know anyone else in the city. I couldn't leave her stranded."

Vanessa stepped in behind him as if she had been waiting for her cue. She held a small leather bag against her chest and glanced around my home with wide, careful eyes.

"I'm so sorry, Natalie," she said softly. "I told Evan I could sleep at the airport, but he wouldn't hear of it."

"The airport is out of the question," Evan said. His irritation landed on me, not her. "Please show her to the guest suite. I have a headache, and I don't want another argument."

Another argument.

That was what he called every boundary I tried to keep.

I stepped aside. "Follow me."

The east-wing guest suite had its own bathroom, a sitting area, and windows overlooking the garden. It was larger than the first apartment Evan and I had shared after we got married.

Vanessa entered, took one look at the white duvet, and wrapped her arms around herself.

"Is something wrong?" I asked.

"No. It's beautiful." She swallowed. "It's just so far from everything. I get anxious in unfamiliar places, especially if I feel shut away."

Evan moved past me and put a hand on her shoulder. "It's only for a few nights."

"I know. I hate being difficult."

He turned to me. "Natalie, she's claustrophobic. This room is too isolated."

I looked around the five-hundred-square-foot suite. "It's a bedroom, Evan. Not a bunker."

"She needs to feel safe."

"And?"

He exhaled sharply, already annoyed that I had not volunteered the answer he wanted. "Clear your things out of the master bedroom. She can sleep there. It has better light, and it's closer to the stairs."

For a second, I thought I had misheard him.

"You want me to give Vanessa our bedroom."

"It's just a room, Nat."

"It is my room in my house."

"And she is our guest."

"Then she can use the guest suite."

His jaw tightened. "Why do you have to make everything hostile? Pack a bag for three nights."

"Where do you plan to sleep?"

He looked away too quickly. "I'll figure it out."

That answer told me more than he intended.

Vanessa peered around him. For one clean second, the trembling mouth disappeared. A small smile touched her lips.

Then she lowered her eyes again.

I could have fought. Seven years earlier, I would have. I would have demanded explanations until two in the morning. I would have reminded Evan of every promise we made in that bedroom.

Instead, I walked upstairs.

I packed a suitcase.

At midnight, I was awake in the guest suite, staring at a ceiling I had paid to renovate.

Thirst finally pushed me into the hallway.

The master bedroom door opened before I reached the stairs.

Vanessa stepped out.

She had changed.

The crimson silk nightgown she wore belonged to me. I had ordered it from Paris for my fifth anniversary with Evan. He had once told me the color made him forget every other woman in the room.

Now it clung to Vanessa's body.

She touched one hand to her chest. "You scared me."

"Take it off."

Her expression remained sweet. "I couldn't find my pajamas."

"So you went through my closet?"

"Evan said I could borrow something." She smoothed her palms over the silk. "He helped me choose this one."

The hallway went very quiet.

"He helped you choose my anniversary nightgown."

"He thought it would fit." Her gaze swept over me. "It's a little tight in the chest, but it's comfortable."

There it was again.

Not innocence. Not anxiety.

Territory.

For years, I had explained Evan to myself. Stress. Long hours. Family pressure. The endless demands of Apex Solutions. I had excused missed dinners and cruel remarks because I remembered the man who once slept under his desk to keep his startup alive.

That man had disappeared long before Vanessa arrived.

I just had not wanted to admit it.

"Keep it," I said.

Her smile flickered. "What?"

"Keep the nightgown."

I turned back toward the guest room.

"Natalie, wait."

I did not.

I packed until sunrise.

At seven, Maria, Leo the chef, and Marcus the driver stood across from me in the kitchen.

Maria's eyes moved toward the staircase. "Are you leaving, Mrs. Gallagher?"

"Yes."

I slid a leather folder across the island.

"The villa is mine. So are the employment contracts for this household. Your salaries come from my personal accounts, not Evan's."

Marcus nodded. He knew. All three of them did.

"You can stay and negotiate new employment with Evan," I continued. "Or you can come with me to the penthouse downtown. Same positions. Twenty-percent raises for the inconvenience."

The chef untied his apron. "What time are we leaving?"

Maria gave him an offended look. "At least pretend to think about it."

"I have watched Mr. Gallagher complain that truffle butter is too cold," he said. "I am not staying without hazard pay."

For the first time all night, I laughed.

"One hour," I said. "Take only what belongs to me."

By eight-thirty, my clothes, personal files, staff, cars, artwork, and valuables were gone.

I left Evan the furniture he had purchased before our marriage and every item that legally belonged to him.

I did not leave a note.

The penthouse sat at the top of a glass tower downtown. I had bought it years ago as an investment and never lived there. When the elevator doors opened, morning light poured across the hardwood floors.

Quiet.

No perfume that was not mine. No woman's laughter in my bedroom. No husband telling me to shrink so somebody else could feel comfortable.

My phone rang before I set down my bag.

Evan.

I watched it ring out.

He called again.

Then again.

On the fourth call, I answered.

"Natalie!" His voice echoed as though he were standing in the middle of the empty foyer. "Where are you? Where is everyone?"

"At the penthouse."

"Why?"

I walked to the window. "Because I live here now."

"Maria is gone. The kitchen is empty. Vanessa wanted breakfast, and there isn't even a clean pan."

"I took my staff."

"You took the staff?" His voice rose. "Who is supposed to cook? Who is supposed to clean that house?"

I smiled at the city below.

"Don't complicate things, Evan," I said. "Just let her have the space."

"Natalie, this is insane."

"No. This is logistics."

"Come home."

"I am home."

Silence.

Then his tone changed. Lower. Sharper. "What are you doing?"

I looked at the leather folder on my kitchen counter.

"Check your mail tomorrow," I said. "You're going to need a lawyer."

I ended the call before he could answer.

For the first time in seven years, the silence belonged to me.
