When My Husband Helped His Mistress Destroy Me Chapter 1

Three weeks. That's how long I spent planning it.

I booked the private room at Noir, the club where Greyson and I had our first real date back when we were nineteen and pretending to be adults. I ordered the cake from Maison Petit—salted caramel, the kind he always picked the frosting off first. I strung navy silk drapes across the ceiling myself, standing on a stepladder at nine in the morning while the staff watched. And the watch. God, the watch. A 1962 Patek Philippe I'd found at an estate auction, the last of my personal savings gone in a single wire transfer. I had it engraved on the back: *Third time's the truth. — A.*

I believed that. I really believed it.

Three marriages. Three divorces. And somehow, every time, I came back to Greyson Hart like a compass needle that only knows one direction. People thought I was foolish. Maybe I was. But when you love someone from the time you're eight years old—when you know the exact way they laugh when something actually surprises them, when you've memorized the small scar above their left eyebrow from a bicycle fall at age ten—you don't stop easily. You don't stop at all.

I arrived at Noir forty minutes early to check the flowers.

The hallway outside the private room was dim, just the low amber sconces they kept lit all day. The door was open a few inches. I could hear voices inside—Greyson's voice, low and easy, the way he sounded when he was performing for people he wanted to impress.

I slowed down.

'She's a convenient arrangement,' he was saying. 'Public-facing. Clean optics while the Sarahi situation stays quiet.'

Someone laughed. 'How long can you keep that up?'

'As long as necessary.' A pause. I could hear him pour something. 'Ashlyn's predictable. She'll stay in her lane. She always does.'

I stood very still in the hallway.

Sarahi. Sarahi Mendez—I knew the name. Everyone in New York knew the name. Rising actress, beautiful in that sharp, deliberate way, always photographed at the right events. I had seen her face on three magazine covers in the past month alone.

I pressed my back against the wall and breathed through my nose.

Convenient arrangement.

I thought about the engraving on the watch. *Third time's the truth.*

I pushed the door open and walked in.

Greyson stood at the head of the table with two men I didn't recognize—suits, expensive watches, the careful blankness of people paid to have no opinions. He looked at me. Something shifted in his expression. Not guilt. Just irritation, the way you look at a meeting that's been interrupted.

'Ashlyn.'

I didn't answer him. I walked to the cake table first. The box was tied with a navy ribbon I had chosen myself. I untied it, lifted the lid, and turned the whole thing upside down onto the white tablecloth. Salted caramel hit the silk in a slow, heavy collapse.

I pulled the drapes down next. One handful at a time, the navy silk pooling on the floor like water.

Then I picked up the watch box, opened it, and dropped the Patek Philippe into the nearest champagne flute. It hit the glass with a clean, small sound.

'I want a divorce,' I said. 'The real kind. Final.'

Greyson stared at me. His jaw was tight. The two men had gone very quiet.

'You're making a scene,' he said.

'Sign the papers, Greyson.'

He looked at me for a long moment with that expression I knew—the one that meant he had already decided I wasn't serious. He pulled a pen from his jacket pocket, took the folded document I held out, and signed it against the wall without reading a word.

'You'll be back by Friday,' he said. 'You always are.'

I left without touching the watch.

---

By the time I got back to the penthouse, every card I owned had stopped working. I tried the grocery store app. Declined. The pharmacy. Declined. I sat on the bathroom floor in my coat and didn't move for a long time.

Eventually I found the necklace in my jewelry case and held it in both hands.

My mother's pearl necklace. Vivienne Foster's. Sixteen perfectly matched Akoya pearls on a platinum chain, the clasp shaped like a small crescent moon. She wore it in every photograph I have of her. When she died, it was the one thing I asked for. The one thing I would have asked for from the whole burning house of my family's collapse.

I pressed my thumb against the clasp the way I always did when I needed to remember something was still real.

I slept on the bathroom floor that night. I didn't cry.

---

She came the next morning.

I heard the door open—Greyson's key, his code—and then heels on marble, unhurried. I came out of the bedroom and stopped.

Sarahi Mendez was standing in my living room. She was exactly as beautiful in person as the magazine covers suggested. She looked at me the way you look at furniture you've already decided to replace.

She walked past me to the bedroom. I followed.

She opened my jewelry case.

She lifted my mother's necklace out with two fingers, held it up to the light, and fastened it around her own throat.

'Greyson said I could have it,' she said. Her voice was soft. Almost kind.

My hands were shaking. I called Greyson before she finished speaking.

He answered on the second ring.

'She has my mother's necklace,' I said. 'Tell her to put it back.'

'Ashlyn.' He sounded tired. 'Don't start.'

'It belonged to my mother. It's the only—'

'I'll be there in twenty minutes. Don't touch her.'

He arrived in fifteen. He walked through the door and looked at Sarahi first—a quick, checking look, the kind you give someone you're worried about—and then at me.

'Give it back,' I said.

'She's wearing it fine,' he said.

I stepped toward Sarahi. He moved between us and shoved me—one hand, flat against my shoulder, hard. I went backward into the kitchen island. The corner of the marble caught the side of my head and the room went white for a second. When I could see again, there was blood on my fingers and Greyson was already at the door with his hand on Sarahi's back, guiding her out.

He didn't look back.

I sat down on the kitchen floor. The blood ran warm down the side of my face. I pressed my palm against it and stared at the place where my mother's necklace used to be.

The clasp. The small crescent moon.

Gone.
