After Being Accused as a Mistress, I Married My Ex’s Uncle Chapter 1

“You’re sleeping with my fiancé.”

The slap split my lip before I understood the accusation.

Four security guards held the office door while a beautiful stranger woman stripped me of every gift my boyfriend had given me.

My coat. My shoes. The necklace he had fastened around my throat.

Then she showed me their engagement announcement.

That was how I learned my boyfriend had a fiancé.

That was also the day everyone decided I was a mistress.

Six years later, I returned to Bellhaven wearing a white silk.

The private dining room at the Hawthorne Hotel overlooked the river, its windows filled with the gold reflections of the city. I sat between NovaGen’s chief legal officer and our head of acquisitions while the local executives competed to refill my glass.

We had come to inspect three laboratories NovaGen planned to purchase. I was officially the company’s chief strategist.

Unofficially, as one of its largest individual shareholders, I was the person who could kill the deal with one sentence.

I had no intention of discussing my past.

Then a man across the table narrowed his eyes at me.

“Evelyn Carter?”

I recognized Miles Denton after a moment. Six years ago, he had worked two cubicles away from me at Bellhaven Medical Systems. He had laughed loudest after Chloe Harrington slapped me.

His surprise became a smirk.

“Well, this is unexpected.” He turned to my colleagues with a conspiratorial chuckle. “You people should be careful. Evelyn has always had a talent for getting close to important men.”

The table went silent.

Miles mistook silence for encouragement.

“She caused quite a scandal here. Slept with a client’s fiancé, then disappeared when she got caught. I suppose some habits pay better than others.”

My colleague, Rachel Moore, set down her fork.

“Are you calling Dr. Carter a mistress?”

Miles lifted both hands. “I’m only saying what everyone knew.”

“No,” Rachel said. “You’re insulting the woman who developed the patent your company is begging. She owns seventeen percent of NovaGen. If Dr. Carter leaves this table, your deal leaves with her.”

The blood drained from his face.

He looked at me, then at NovaGen’s CEO, who did not bother hiding his disgust.

Miles stood so quickly that his chair scraped the floor. “Dr. Carter, I—I had no idea. Please forgive me. I was repeating an old misunderstanding.”

He lifted his glass with a trembling hand.

I smiled.

“An old misunderstanding?”

The moment returned me to the worst afternoon of my life.

Back then, I had been twenty-four and working as a junior research coordinator for Bellhaven Medical. I earned barely enough to cover rent, sent money to my widowed mother every month.

Adrian had told me he was a regional sales consultant. He complained about strict parents and claimed his family’s money had disappeared after a bad investment. I believed him because he ate cheap noodles in my kitchen, fixed my leaking faucet, and fell asleep on my poor sofa.

When he gave me a camel-colored coat for my birthday, he said he had found it at an outlet.

The red-soled heels were “samples.”

The diamond pendant was “a synthetic stone from a friend.”

I had argued that even fake jewelry was too expensive. He had kissed my forehead and told me to let him spoil me once.

I never knew the coat cost six months of my wages.

I never knew the shoes had been custom made.

And I never knew Chloe Harrington existed until she entered my office with four bodyguards and slapped me in front of forty employees.

“Take it all off,” she ordered.

My cheek burned. “Who are you?”

She shoved her phone toward my face. On the screen, Adrian wore a tuxedo beside her at a charity gala. The caption congratulated the heirs of Whitmore Holdings and Harrington Industries on their upcoming marriage.

“He is my fiancé,” Chloe said. “You are the temporary entertainment he was too embarrassed to admit to.”

I stared at the photograph until the room blurred.

“That’s impossible.”

She laughed. “Of course you’d say that.”

One guard pulled Adrian’s coat from my shoulders. Another placed a shopping bag on the floor and demanded my shoes. Chloe tore the pendant from my neck herself. The chain scratched my skin, leaving a thin red line.

My coworkers watched through the glass walls.

No one helped.

Miles filmed part of it on his phone.

I stood barefoot on the cold tile while Chloe inspected me like a thief.

“If you contact him again, I’ll make sure no respectable company in this city hires you,” she said. “Women like you should learn what happens when you reach above your place.”

After she left, whispers spread fast.

“She must know.”

“Look at those gifts.”

“Maybe that’s how she got assigned to our company.”

My supervisor called me into his office before the end of the day.

“Harrington Industries is one of our largest clients,” he said. “Whether this was intentional or not, your presence has become a business risk.”

“You investigated for less than an hour.”

“It's not necessary.”

He slid a resignation agreement across the desk.

I did not sign it. I packed my photographs and research notes into a cardboard box and walked out barefoot.

From the sidewalk, I called Adrian.

His phone was off.

I called twelve times that night. I emailed him. I went to the small apartment where he sometimes stayed, but the doorman claimed no one named Adrian lived there.

The silence hurt more than Chloe’s slap.

On my kitchen table sat an unopened envelope I had planned to give him over dinner. Inside was my offer from Westbridge University’s doctoral program in California, including a full scholarship and a research stipend.

I had spent four years saving every possible dollar. The money, combined with the scholarship, was enough for me to pursue for my dream.

The acceptance was supposed to be our celebration.

Instead, it became my escape.

Within forty-eight hours, I accepted the offer, ended my lease, changed my number, and sent my mother to stay with my aunt in another state. I cut off every person connected to Bellhaven.

I did not leave because of guilt.

I left because I finally understood that no one there cared about the truth.

At the banquet six years later, Miles still held his glass in the air.

I lifted mine but did not drink.

“I don’t accept that you’re sorry.” I said.

His mouth opened.

I turned to NovaGen’s CEO. “Remove Mr. Denton from all negotiations. We’ll continue tomorrow with someone else.”

“Of course,” he said.

Miles began apologizing again as his colleague escorted him out.

Rachel touched my wrist beneath the table. “Are you all right?”

I looked across the city that had once watched me walk away in shame.

“Yes,” I said, and this time it was true. “I’m finally exactly where I need to be.”

I started looking forward to seeing those old friends again.
