Chapter 3

"Finally found you, little mathematician," he murmured.

I shoved against his solid chest, stumbling back onto the freezing pavement. "Who are you? How do you know about my math?"

He adjusted his cufflinks, his dark eyes scanning my face with an unsettling familiarity. "Anderson. Anderson Cole. CEO of Apex Financial Tech."

"I don't know any Anderson Cole," I said, gripping the fabric of my thin sweater.

A shadow crossed his sharp features. He took a single step forward, invading my space again. "We grew up together, Penny. We built rocket models in your garage until we were fifteen. You used to write algorithms on the driveway concrete with sidewalk chalk."

I rubbed my temples. A dull ache throbbed behind my eyes, right where the old scars lay hidden under my hairline. "I was in a severe car crash at sixteen. I lost most of my teenage memories. I don't remember you."

Anderson’s jaw tightened. "I searched for you for eight years. When I finally tracked you down, you were walking down the aisle with Miller. You looked happy. So I stayed away."

He reached into his tailored suit jacket and withdrew a sleek silver business card, holding it out to me.

"But you aren't a housewife anymore," Anderson stated, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I run a private AI mathematics lab in the city. I need a lead algorithm designer. Come work for me. Reclaim your equations."

I stared at the silver card, my fingers trembling. "I haven't coded in five years."

"Genius doesn't expire," he countered.

Before I could take the card, a loud cheer erupted from the electronics store display window behind him. Dozens of flat-screen TVs broadcast the local community channel.

My blood turned to ice.

Jasper’s smiling face filled the massive screens. He wore his miniature blue football jersey, holding a plastic helmet. Next to him stood Sarah, gripping a news microphone with her perfectly manicured hands.

"Yes, Jasper played wonderfully today," Sarah beamed at the interviewer, pulling my son against her hip. "Being his mother is my greatest joy. We are such a perfect family."

"She isn't his mother," I whispered, the sound tearing from my throat.

I shoved past Anderson, sprinting down the block toward the community athletic field. The stadium lights glowed against the dusk sky just two streets away.

"Penny, wait!" Anderson called out.

I didn't stop. My lungs burned with every step. I tore through the entrance gates of the school field, ignoring the ticket attendant's angry shouts. The metal bleachers overflowed with cheering parents and local press.

I spotted them near the top row of the stands. Eason held two hot dogs. Sarah wiped a smudge of dirt off Jasper’s cheek, laughing for the cameras nearby.

"Get your hands off my son!" I screamed, marching up the aluminum steps.

Heads turned. The noisy crowd instantly fell silent, parting to create a clear path to my family.

Jasper dropped his toy football. He hid behind Eason’s leg. "Sarah Mommy, make her go away!"

Sarah clamped a hand over her mouth, shrinking back against the metal safety railing. "Penny, please! We are just trying to have a nice family outing. Don't ruin this for the boy."

"You went on live television and called yourself his mother!" I climbed higher, my shoes clanking against the metal grates. "You are a fraud!"

Eason dropped the food. He stepped directly in front of Sarah, shielding her with his body. "You are insane. I told you to stay away from us."

"I came for my child," I snapped, reaching around Eason to grab Jasper’s hand.

Sarah lunged forward.

She didn't stumble. She didn't slip. Her eyes flashed with pure malice right before she slammed both of her palms hard into my shoulders.

The force threw me backward into empty space.

My heel slipped off the edge of the aluminum step.

I tumbled down the steep bleachers. Metal bit into my elbows, my knees, my spine. The world spun in a blur of gray and harsh stadium lights. I rolled violently until my stomach crashed directly into the thick iron safety railing at the bottom landing.

A sickening pop echoed in my ears.

Agony ripped through my abdomen. I collapsed onto the cold concrete, curling into a tight ball.

Warm liquid pooled between my thighs, soaking rapidly through my jeans. I pressed a shaking hand to my stomach. Two months. My period was two months late. The stress of Eason's startup and his constant late nights had made me ignore the signs.

I was pregnant.

"Penny! Why do you always target her?!" Eason roared, rushing down the steps.

He didn't look at the blood pooling on the concrete. He didn't look at my twisted, shivering body. He stopped two feet away and pointed a furious finger at my face.

"Sarah is terrified!" Eason yelled. "You ruined Jasper's game!"

I opened my mouth to speak, but only a choked gasp escaped. The pain tore through my insides, sharp and blinding. My vision faded to a fuzzy black, the sound of Eason's angry voice drowned out by the rushing in my ears.

The sharp smell of medical alcohol pulled me out of the darkness.

I stared up at the cracked white ceiling tiles. The steady beep of a heart monitor filled the sterile hospital room, keeping time with the hollow thud in my chest.

A man in a white coat stood at the foot of the bed. He held a clipboard, his expression heavy with pity.

"Mrs. Miller," the doctor murmured, refusing to meet my eyes. "I am so sorry. The impact to your abdomen was too severe. The baby didn't make it."

My hands moved instinctively to rest on my flat stomach. The hospital gown felt like sandpaper against my skin. I didn't cry. The pain was too deep, too absolute for tears. It just carved me out, leaving an empty cavern where my soul used to reside.

The heavy wooden door swung open.

Eason marched in, dragging Jasper by the wrist. He checked his gold watch, visibly annoyed by the inconvenience. "The nurses said you were awake. Are you done with this dramatic stunt? Sarah is waiting in the car, and Jasper is tired."

Jasper peeked around Eason’s leg. He scowled at me, kicking the edge of my hospital bed. "Sarah Mommy bought me a trophy, and you made her cry. You are bad."

I looked at the man I loved and served for six years. I looked at the child I birthed, the boy I sacrificed my entire academic future to raise.

They felt like strangers. Cold, cruel strangers who wore the faces of my family.

The last flickering ember of light inside my chest extinguished.

I sat up slowly. The IV line tugged at my bruised wrist, but I ignored the sting.

"Take your son and get out," I said, my voice entirely dead.

Eason crossed his arms, his brow furrowing. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me." I locked eyes with him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger. No love. Just an endless, freezing void. "Starting today, you no longer have a wife or a mother."

Eason scoffed, turning toward the hallway. "You'll be begging to come back by tomorrow morning. You have nothing."

He dragged Jasper out, letting the heavy door slam shut behind them.

The room fell silent again. Just the steady, mocking beep of the heart monitor.

Then, a soft knock echoed from the glass panel.

The door pushed open. Anderson stepped inside, his dark suit immaculate, holding a thick stack of legal documents and a pen.

"Ready to destroy them?" he asked.
