Chapter 1

I stood in front of the ornate mirror in the freezing private quarters of the Obsidian Crest packhouse. My fingers trembled as they traced the smooth, unmarked skin of my neck. I was Liana Morales. I was supposed to be the glamorous, revered Luna of this powerful pack. Yet, as I stared at the pristine, untouched marital bed behind me in the reflection, I knew the bitter truth. I was a high-ranking she-wolf reduced to begging for a single touch from my fated mate.

This was my nine-hundred-and-ninety-ninth attempt.

I closed my eyes and let my inner wolf push forward, refusing to give up on the fated pull. My natural scent—a heavy, intoxicating blend of night-blooming jasmine and sweet vanilla—flooded the bedroom, designed by the Moon Goddess to lure my mate. I reached out through the dark void in my mind, desperately battering against the thick, iron-like mental wall that blocked our mind-link. *Graham. Please. Let me in.*

The heavy oak door swung open. Alpha Graham Scott stepped into the room.

The harsh, bitter scent of his Cuban cigars and black coffee instantly clashed with my floral aroma, suffocating it. My heart leaped with a desperate hope, but then I saw his hands. He was wearing his black leather gloves. Again. He wore them inside his own bedroom to ensure not a single millimeter of our skin would ever accidentally brush.

"Graham," I whispered, stepping toward him, my wolf whining for his warmth.

His jaw clenched. Before I could even reach him, a brutal, crushing force slammed into my mind. He ruthlessly reinforced his mental walls, throwing my wolf back into the dark. I gasped, stumbling backwards as the psychic rejection echoed painfully through my skull.

"Stop it, Liana," his voice cracked like a whip. He didn't just speak; he used his icy Alpha tone. The authoritative vibration forced my knees to buckle, my wolf submitting to his sheer power against my will. "Stop flooding the room with your scent. Stop clawing at my mind. You are acting like a desperate, attention-seeking omega."

The words felt like a physical slap. Humiliation burned my cheeks, hot and stinging. I was his fated mate, his equal, yet he looked at me with nothing but cold asceticism. He was deliberately suppressing his own feral wolf, burying our sacred bond under layers of toxic, iron-willed discipline.

"I just want my husband," I choked out, tears of frustration blurring my vision. "I just want our bond to—"

A frantic, jagged spike of panic ripped through the pack's mind-link, cutting me off entirely. It wasn't meant for me, but the sheer volume of Beta Declan Reed's mental shout bled into my consciousness.

*Alpha! It’s Kendra. She’s in the courtyard. The Elders found out she violated a sacred pack law. They’re demanding the rite of punishment!*

Graham’s stoic mask shattered in an instant. The cold, untouchable Alpha vanished, replaced by a man seized by absolute terror. He didn't even look back at me. He spun on his heel and sprinted out the door, leaving me standing alone in the suffocating silence.

My chest tightened. Kendra. His fragile, wolfless stepsister.

I wiped my eyes and chased after him, my bare feet slapping against the cold stone hallways. When I burst out into the damp, chilly air of the pack courtyard, the scene before me made my blood run cold.

A massive crowd had gathered under the gray sky. In the center stood the Pack Elders, their faces twisted in righteous fury. On the muddy ground, crying pathetically and curling into a ball, was Kendra. Elder Silas stood over her, his arm raised high, gripping the heavy, silver-tipped cane used only for the most severe physical punishments.

I expected Graham to roar. I expected him to unleash his dominating Alpha aura, to use his terrifying power to order the Elders to stand down and protect his family. That was what an Alpha did.

But he didn't.

Instead, the proud, iron-willed Alpha of the Obsidian Crest Pack threw himself into the mud. He deliberately swallowed his powerful aura, suppressing his dominance completely so the Elders wouldn't see it as a challenge to their ancient laws. He dropped to his knees right as the heavy silver cane swung down toward Kendra’s fragile back.

Graham reached out and intercepted the weapon with his bare hand.

*CRACK.*

The sickening sound of his bones crushing echoed across the silent courtyard. I screamed, clapping my hands over my mouth. The silver tip seared right through his leather glove, burning his flesh with a loud hiss, guaranteeing a permanent, ugly scar.

Graham didn't even flinch at the agony. He simply pulled the weeping Kendra into his chest. He cradled her. His large, bleeding hand hovered over her hair, his eyes filled with a desperate, frantic tenderness—a tenderness he had ruthlessly denied me for our entire marriage.

"Shh," he murmured to her, his voice trembling with raw emotion, completely ignoring his ruined hand. "I've got you. I'm here."

I stood frozen at the edge of the courtyard, the cold wind biting through my thin clothes. The smell of his burning flesh mixed with the rain. My inner wolf let out a long, agonizing howl of pure defeat.

In that single, shattering moment, the blindfold fell from my eyes. He hadn't rejected my scent because he was naturally cold. He hadn't blocked our bond out of a sense of Alpha duty. Graham had only accepted me as his Luna to create a flawless smokescreen. I was nothing but a political prop to appease the Pack Elders.

His heart, his sacrifices, his toxic and twisted devotion—they all belonged entirely to his wolfless stepsister. I was just a convenient shield, bleeding to death for a man who would gladly let his own bones be crushed for someone else.
