Chapter 2

The air around the Obsidian Crest territory lake was bitterly cold, the sky above a bruised, heavy gray. It was supposed to be a routine afternoon patrol, a chance for me to clear my head after the absolute nightmare in the courtyard. But Kendra had insisted on joining. She played the fragile, eager stepsister perfectly, smiling at the Delta warriors until they practically melted. I should have known better. Emboldened by Graham deliberately crushing his own hand to save her from the Elders, Kendra no longer bothered to hide her true colors from me. She knew she was untouchable.

As we approached the steep, rocky drop-off at the deepest edge of the water, Kendra paused and pointed toward the dense pine trees. "I thought I heard something over there," she told the guards, her voice trembling with perfectly practiced anxiety. The Deltas immediately jogged off into the woods to investigate, leaving us entirely alone on the slippery cliff.

The moment they were out of sight, Kendra’s innocent facade completely dissolved. Her shoulders squared. The fake, trembling victim vanished, replaced by a predator. She turned to me, her lips curling into a venomous, mocking sneer.

"You really are pathetic, Liana," she hissed, her voice dripping with malice as she stepped into my personal space. "You parade around the packhouse in your expensive clothes, demanding respect, calling yourself Luna. But we both know the truth. He broke his own bones for me. He bleeds for me. What has he ever given you besides a cold, empty bed?"

"Watch your mouth, Kendra," I warned, taking a step back from her.

But I was too close to the edge. Kendra lunged forward. With a surprising, vicious burst of strength, she slammed both of her hands into my chest.

My heavy boots slipped on the wet, mossy rocks. For a split second, I hung suspended in the freezing air, my arms flailing. Then, I plummeted backward.

The impact knocked the breath straight from my lungs. The lake was practically glacial. The water swallowed me whole, a suffocating, freezing darkness that pierced my skin like a thousand silver blades. My heavy patrol boots and thick winter jacket instantly soaked through, turning into lead weights that dragged me down into the murky depths.

My inner wolf panicked, thrashing wildly against the icy current. I kicked hard, fighting my way to the surface. I broke through the water, gasping violently, my teeth chattering so hard my jaw ached.

"Help!" I choked out, freezing water splashing into my mouth.

Through my blurred, stinging vision, I looked up at the rocky ledge. Kendra wasn't calling for help. She was calmly pulling a small aerosol can from her coat pocket. Scent-masking spray. She quickly misted it over her clothes, completely neutralizing the sour, bitter scent of her own deceit and malice.

Then, her head snapped toward the forest trail. She heard him coming before I did.

Instantly, Kendra dropped to the wet grass. She curled into a tight ball, clutching her chest, and began to hyperventilate. She let out a series of dramatic, gasping sobs just as the heavy, unmistakable scent of Cuban cigars and black coffee crashed through the freezing air.

Graham.

He burst through the treeline, his eyes wild and frantic.

I was treading water, my muscles locking up, my limbs going completely numb. The cold was seeping into my very bones, shutting down my wolf's strength. I reached out to him, not just with my freezing hands, but through the dark void of our mind-link.

*Graham!* I screamed in my mind, throwing all my terror and desperation against his iron-clad mental walls. *Help me! Please! I'm drowning!*

He stopped at the edge of the bank. He looked at the churning, icy water. He looked right at my pale face, at my desperate, splashing arms.

And then he looked at Kendra, who was writhing on the dry grass, faking a panic attack.

Time seemed to stop. My heart hammered against my ribs. I waited for my Alpha, my fated mate, to dive in and save me. I waited for the bond to mean something.

He didn't even hesitate.

Graham turned his back to the lake. He dropped to his knees in the dirt and scooped the completely dry, unharmed Kendra into his arms. He buried his face in her neck, pulling her tight against his chest.

"I'm here, Kenny," his deep voice carried over the wind, thick with panic and devotion. "Breathe. Just look at me. I've got you."

He completely ignored my frantic splashing. He ignored the agonizing pleas in our mind-link. He ignored the fact that his fated mate was sinking beneath the freezing waves.

The shock of his choice hit me harder than the icy water. My lungs burned. My limbs finally gave out. The dark water pulled me under again, rushing into my ears, drowning out the sound of his comforting words to her. Inside my soul, my inner wolf let out a weak, agonizing whimper—a sound of absolute, devastating trauma. She curled up in the dark, shattered by the ultimate betrayal.

I was going to die here. And my mate didn't care.

Pure, raw survival instinct kicked in exactly where my hope had died. I fought blindly. I clawed at the freezing water, kicking my numb legs until my boots scraped against the muddy bottom. Agonizing inch by agonizing inch, I dragged myself toward the shallow edge.

My fingernails dug into the freezing mud. I pulled my heavy, half-frozen body out of the water, collapsing onto the rocky shore. I lay there on my side, violently coughing up lake water, my body wracked with uncontrollable shivers.

Through my wet, tangled hair, I watched Graham carry Kendra away toward the packhouse. He held her like she was the most precious thing in the world. He never once looked back.

The freezing wind whipped across my soaked skin, but the cold outside was nothing compared to the absolute ice in my chest. As I lay shivering in the mud, dragging air into my burning lungs, the last burning ember of my love for Graham Scott finally, permanently, went out.
