Chapter 4

The examination room was quiet except for the soft hum of medical equipment. Dr. Callum Reid's voice was gentle as he reviewed the ultrasound results, but I caught the undercurrent of concern in his tone. Eight weeks. My miracle pregnancy—the one I'd fought years of hormone injections and three failed IVF cycles to achieve—hung in a delicate balance between possibility and loss.

"The uterus is compromised, as we know from your previous injuries," Dr. Reid said, his fingers tracing the edge of the monitor. "And the recent anaphylactic episode introduced significant stress hormones into your system. The body sometimes makes... difficult decisions under such circumstances."

I nodded, my eyes fixed on the small, pulsing shape on the screen. A heartbeat. My heartbeat, intertwined with another.

"Have you discussed this with your husband?" Dr. Reid asked, his eyes meeting mine with professional compassion.

"No," I said simply.

He didn't push. He never did. That was one of the reasons I trusted him—he understood that my medical decisions were mine alone, even from the man who had helped create this fragile life inside me.

"I need to be honest with you, Arlette. The odds of carrying to term with your history... they're not good. Especially now, with the additional complications."

I nodded again. "I understand."

After Dr. Reid left, I sat alone in the examination room, still dressed in my clothes but feeling somehow more exposed than when I'd been in the hospital gown. The ultrasound image lay on the table beside me—a small black and white printout that somehow contained both everything and nothing.

I picked it up and studied it. Eight weeks. A tiny flicker of life that had survived against astronomical odds. A miracle that had grown inside my broken body, the same body that had shattered saving Kylo's life years ago.

My phone buzzed with a text from Patricia: *Family dinner tonight at the mansion. 7 PM. Important we all come together.*

I looked back at the ultrasound. I didn't make a decision then. Not yet. But I felt it forming somewhere deep inside me, as inevitable as gravity.

The Dean mansion glowed with artificial warmth as I stepped through the grand entrance. Patricia had arranged a formal dinner—"to properly welcome Hallie," she'd said in her message. I knew better. This was a coronation.

I was shown to my seat at the far end of the long mahogany table, a position that would have been occupied by a distant cousin or a business associate. Hallie sat at my place—the place I'd occupied for three years of marriage—beside Kylo, her cream dress flowing around her like liquid innocence.

"Arlette," Patricia greeted me with a kiss on the cheek that felt like ice. "So glad you could join us. You look... recovered."

The meal progressed with the careful choreography of old money. First course, second course, the conversation flowing around me like I was a rock in a stream. Then came the moment Patricia had orchestrated.

"I have something for you, dear," she said to Hallie, rising from her seat with a velvet box in her hands. "A small token of welcome."

She opened the box to reveal a strand of pearls—not just any pearls, but the Dean family pearls. The ones worn by every Dean matriarch at formal occasions for three generations.

"These have been in our family for decades," Patricia said, fastening them around Hallie's neck. "They belong with the woman who will carry the next generation of Deans."

She raised her glass. "To new beginnings."

Everyone raised their glasses. I raised mine too, feeling the crystal cool against my fingers. I smiled. I nodded. And when no one was looking, I pulled out my phone and photographed the scene—the seating arrangement, the pearls, the satisfied gleam in Patricia's eyes.

* * *

The weekend gathering at the mansion should have been peaceful. People milling about, casual conversation, the kind of event where nothing truly important happens.

I was wrong.

I stood in the foyer, checking my watch. I had a call scheduled with my research colleague in London—the first step toward the life I was building for myself beyond this house of lies.

A sound from above caught my attention. Hallie stood at the top of the grand staircase, one hand on the banister, the other pressed protectively against her belly. Our eyes met across the open space.

Then she threw herself forward.

It was a beautiful fall—theatrical, calculated, designed for maximum impact. She tumbled down the marble stairs, her body curling instinctively around her belly, her mouth open in a silent scream. She hit the floor with a sickening thud and lay there, writhing, her hands clutching at her stomach.

"She pushed me!" Hallie's hands moved frantically, forming the words everyone could read. "She pushed me!"

She pointed up at the empty space where I had stood seconds before—a space she knew would be empty because she'd watched me walk away toward the library.

The performance was flawless. And everyone believed her.
