When My Husband Protected His Mistress Over Me Chapter 1

The elevator doors opened at 9:47 PM.

I know the exact time because I was standing at the kitchen island, slicing an apple, and I glanced at the microwave clock the moment I heard the mechanism engage. Old habit. I timestamp everything.

Kylo walked in first. He always walked in first.

Then I saw her.

She was tucked against his side like something fragile — a cream sweater, soft and oversized, one hand pressed flat against the curve of her belly. Her eyes were enormous. Dark, wet, and wide in a way that seemed almost practiced, like a child who had learned early that looking helpless was its own kind of armor. She stood in the doorway of my home and let those eyes move slowly around the room, taking inventory.

I set down the knife.

"Her name is Hallie," Kylo said. No preamble. No apology warming the edges of his voice. "She has nowhere to go. The baby is mine."

The apple slice sat on the cutting board. The refrigerator hummed. Outside, snow was falling on the Upper East Side in long, quiet curtains.

I looked at him. He was rubbing the back of his neck.

"Alright," I said.

He blinked. He expected something else — tears, maybe, or volume. That was the thing about Kylo. He always mistook my silence for surrender.

"She stays here," he added, louder. "I mean it, Arlette."

"I heard you the first time." I picked up the apple slice and took a bite. Chewed. Swallowed. "But if she stays, there's something you need to do first."

I walked to the terrace doors and pushed them open. The cold came in like a wall — sharp and immediate, smelling of wet concrete and winter. Snow had already gathered on the railing, maybe two inches deep, glowing faint blue under the city lights.

"Go outside," I said. "And tell the city you love her. Ten thousand times."

The silence that followed was almost funny.

"What?"

"'I love Hallie Wood.'" I kept my voice even. "Ten thousand times. Out loud. When you're done, she can stay."

His jaw tightened. "You're insane."

"Then leave."

He looked at Hallie. She blinked up at him, those enormous eyes glistening, one hand still on her belly. A perfect, trembling still life.

He went outside.

I closed the glass door behind him and sat down on the sofa. Hallie stood near the entryway, watching me. I picked up my phone and opened a new note. I typed the date, the time, and one line: *He complied without further argument.*

Outside, his voice started. Rough and furious at first — "I love Hallie Wood" — each repetition clipped and contemptuous, like he was punishing the words for existing. I could see his breath in the cold air, small white clouds dissolving into the dark. By the five hundredth time, the anger had drained out of his voice. By the two thousandth, he sounded hollow.

Hallie moved to the window. She watched him with something on her face that wasn't sympathy.

I watched her watch him.

When he finally came back inside, his lips were pale and his hands were shaking. He smelled like cold air and humiliation. He looked at me like he wanted to say something that would undo all of it.

"Good," I said quietly. "Now I'll remember exactly what you chose."

I walked to the master bedroom and locked the door.

---

I sat on the edge of the bed in the dark for a long time.

Then I made two phone calls.

The first was to my gynecologist. Six weeks. Viable. Strong heartbeat for the gestational age. She used the word *remarkable*, and I understood why — she had been with me through three failed IVF cycles, through the hormone injections that left bruises along my abdomen, through the clinical language that kept trying to tell me my body was not capable of this. The accident at twenty-one had seen to that. Shattered pelvis. Uterine scarring. A car I threw myself in front of so Kylo Dean wouldn't have to.

Remarkable.

The second call was to Dr. Callum Reid at the private fertility clinic on East 68th. I asked him about embryo cryopreservation. He asked me if everything was alright. I told him I just wanted to understand my options.

I opened my laptop. Created a new document. Typed the date and time at the top.

I did not cry.

---

In the morning, I watched Hallie move through my home.

She was good. I'll give her that. The doe-eyed softness never slipped when Kylo was in the room — she drifted from surface to surface like she was afraid of taking up too much space, fingers trailing gently along the back of the sofa, head slightly bowed.

Then Kylo left for a call.

She straightened. Her gaze sharpened. She moved differently — quicker, more deliberate — and went directly to Kylo's home office.

I stood in the hallway. The framed mirror near the study door gave me a clean angle. I watched her open the filing cabinet beside his desk. Watched her fingers flip through the folders until she found mine. Watched her pause at the medical records. At the allergy documentation — peanuts, tree nuts, severe anaphylactic risk — printed in red at the top of the page.

She studied it for eleven seconds. I counted.

I raised my phone and photographed the reflection: the open drawer, her hand on the folder, the date visible on the wall calendar behind her.

I added it to the document.

Timestamped.
