Chapter 5

The world narrowed to a single point of focus as Kylo burst into the foyer. His eyes swept the scene — Hallie writhing on the marble floor, her hands clutching her belly, her face contorted in silent agony. He didn't look at me. Not once. His gaze passed over me as if I were a piece of furniture, an obstacle in his path to the woman who had orchestrated this performance with surgical precision.

Patricia appeared from the dining room, her pearls swinging as she rushed to kneel beside Hallie. "Oh, my dear, my dear," she cooed, stroking Hallie's hair with the tenderness of a grandmother. "Someone call an ambulance! She's in labor!"

I stood perfectly still, watching the scene unfold with a detachment that surprised me. The marble floor was cold beneath my feet, but not as cold as the realization crystallizing in my chest: this was what my life had become. This farce. This betrayal staged with the careful precision of a Broadway production.

"Security," Kylo's voice cut through the chaos, sharp and commanding. "I want Mrs. Dean escorted to her room. She is not to leave until I return."

Two men in dark suits materialized from somewhere in the mansion's shadowed corners. They flanked me without touching me, their presence a silent accusation. I didn't resist as they guided me away from the scene, their footsteps echoing in the cavernous space.

"Kylo," I said, my voice steady despite everything. "Look at me."

He didn't turn. He didn't even pause in his frantic ministrations to Hallie's theatrical pain. "Not now, Arlette," he snapped. "She needs me. The baby needs me."

The words hit me like physical blows. The baby. Not our baby. Her baby. The child he had chosen over our miracle, over our history, over everything we had built.

I let the security guards lead me away, my heels clicking against the marble in a rhythm that sounded like a countdown. As they escorted me through the mansion's corridors, I felt something inside me go permanently quiet — a door closing with a soft, final click.

The hospital would later declare it a false alarm. The baby, they said, was "miraculously fine." I received the news via text while sitting alone in the penthouse living room, the space eerily silent without Kylo's presence. He had stayed at the hospital, of course. Hallie needed comfort. Hallie needed protection. Hallie needed him.

I opened my laptop and reviewed the document I had been building for months. Every timestamp. Every photograph. Every medical record. The evidence of my systematic destruction, meticulously cataloged. I scrolled through it all one last time, then closed the laptop with quiet finality.

My phone felt heavy in my hand as I dialed Dr. Callum Reid's number. He answered on the second ring, his voice warm with professional concern.

"Arlette? Is everything alright?"

"I need to schedule a procedure," I said, my voice as steady as if I were arranging a business meeting. "And I need to discuss embryo preservation."

There was a brief pause. "Are you certain? We discussed the risks—"

"I'm certain," I interrupted. "Tomorrow morning, if possible."

After ending the call, I spent the remainder of the evening moving through the penthouse like a ghost. I touched nothing, took nothing, claimed nothing. This place had never really been mine, I realized. It had always been a stage set for someone else's performance.

In Kylo's study, I found the divorce papers he had been avoiding. They had been sitting there for weeks, unsigned, as if ignoring them could make the reality they represented disappear. I picked up the pen from his desk — the Mont Blanc he had given me on our first anniversary, the one that had written so many of Dean Enterprises' most critical contracts.

I signed my name with the same precision I had used to build his empire, the same steady hand that had guided him through every crisis. No tears. No hesitation. Just the scratch of ink on paper and the quiet finality of a decision that had been forming since the night he stood in the snow, screaming his love for another woman.

When I finished, I placed the pen back in its holder and looked at my signature for a long moment. It was the last thing I would give him. The last piece of myself I would surrender.

Tomorrow, I would give him one more gift. The final one.
