Chapter 4

The camera was smaller than a button.

I'd installed it myself three months ago, hidden in the decorative molding above Damien's study bookshelf. The angle was perfect—it captured the entire desk, both chairs, and the credenza where he kept the whiskey box. The feed went directly to an encrypted server Devon monitored from the field office.

Most days it recorded nothing useful. Damien on phone calls. Damien reviewing spreadsheets. Damien pouring himself scotch at two in the afternoon.

But today was different.

I was in the kitchen when my phone buzzed. A text from Devon, three words: *Check the feed.*

I pulled up the secure app. The timestamp read 2:47 PM. Current time was 3:15. I'd missed it by half an hour.

I hit play.

The study door opened. Damien entered first, followed by Whitney. She was wearing cream-colored silk, pearls at her throat. Damien gestured to the chair across from his desk. Whitney sat with the kind of posture that came from decades of country club luncheons.

Damien pulled a manila folder from his desk drawer. Set it between them.

"These are the final documents," he said. His voice was clear through the camera's audio. "Martin reviewed them yesterday. Everything's clean."

Whitney opened the folder. Lifted the first page. I recognized it immediately—a loan authorization form from Citibank Private Wealth Management. My name at the top. My forged signature at the bottom.

"Five hundred thousand," Whitney said. She sounded pleased. "And she has no idea?"

"None." Damien leaned back in his chair. "She thinks she's been managing household accounts. She has no clue half of it's been rerouted through the offshore structure."

Whitney turned another page. "And when you file?"

"Martin submits the divorce petition next week. We present the debt documentation as marital liability. She'll be responsible for every dollar." He smiled. "She'll sign whatever we put in front of her. She's too stupid to know what she's looking at."

Whitney laughed. Actually laughed.

"Poor thing," she said, without a trace of sympathy. "She really thought this was a marriage."

"She thought she was lucky I chose her." Damien poured himself scotch from the crystal decanter. "Five years of playing housewife. I almost feel bad."

"Don't." Whitney's voice turned cold. "She was useful. Now she's not. That's how these things work."

Damien raised his glass. "To making problems disappear."

Whitney touched her water glass to his. "Once the offshore transfers complete, she'll have nothing. No assets. No recourse. Just debt and a very expensive lesson about marrying above her station."

"How long until the transfers finish?"

"Elliot says seventy-two hours. He's handling the diplomatic channels personally." Whitney set down her glass. "By Friday, everything will be clean. You file Monday. She's out by the end of the month."

Damien nodded slowly. "And if she fights it?"

"She won't." Whitney's smile was thin and certain. "She's too broken. I made sure of that."

The video continued for another three minutes. They discussed which attorney would serve me the papers. Whether I'd cry. Where I'd probably end up living. Whitney suggested I'd go back to my father, 'like a child who couldn't manage adult responsibilities.'

Then they left the study together, and the frame went still.

I stood in the kitchen holding my phone.

Outside the study, just beyond the camera's view, was the hallway. I'd been standing there the entire time. I'd heard every word through the door—not just the recording, but live, in real time. I'd been bringing Damien his afternoon tea. Earl Grey, one sugar, served at exactly three o'clock because that's what he preferred.

I'd stood there with the tea tray in my hands. Listening to my husband and his mother plan my destruction. Listening to them laugh.

I hadn't made a sound.

When they left, I'd waited thirty seconds. Then I'd walked back to the kitchen. Set down the tray. Made myself a cup of coffee. Sat at the table.

Now I watched the recording a second time. Then a third.

Every word was clear. Every face visible. The documents were on camera. The conspiracy was complete.

I opened a new message to Devon.

*Timeline confirmed. They're executing the debt transfer within 72 hours. Filing for divorce Monday. I have full audio/video of the conspiracy discussion. It's over.*

His response came in seconds.

*Tactical team is ready. Say the word.*

I looked at the time. Friday was three days away. Monday was five.

I typed: *Let them file the transfers. I want it in writing. Signed. Notarized. No escape.*

*Lauren—*

*Five more days,* I sent back. *Then we move.*

I closed the laptop. Picked up the tea tray I'd abandoned earlier. Walked down the hall to Damien's study.

I knocked softly.

"Come in," he called.

I opened the door. He was at his desk, scrolling through his phone. He didn't look up.

"Your tea," I said quietly.

He waved a hand. "Just leave it."

I set the tray on the corner of his desk. The same desk where he'd sat with his mother an hour ago, planning to bury me.

"Will you be home for dinner?" I asked.

He finally glanced up. His expression was mildly annoyed, like I was an interruption he hadn't budgeted time for.

"No," he said. "I have plans."

Kira. He had plans with Kira.

"Of course," I murmured. "I'll make something light for myself."

He was already looking back at his phone.

I left the study. Closed the door behind me.

Then I walked to the guest bedroom at the far end of the penthouse. The one Damien never entered because he'd decided it was 'too small' and 'poorly positioned.' The one I'd quietly claimed as my own.

I opened the closet. Reached past the winter coats to the back corner where an old wool peacoat hung, untouched since the day I'd arrived.

I slipped my hand into the lining. Felt the envelope taped inside.

I pulled it out carefully. Opened it.

The photograph was four years old. Me in my Interpol dress uniform. Full insignia. Hair pulled back. Standing in the headquarters lobby in Lyon with Devon just outside the frame. Someone had said something funny—I couldn't remember what—but I was laughing. Really laughing. Unguarded. Free.

I looked at that woman for a long time.

She was still in here somewhere. Buried under five years of performance and submission and swallowed rage. But she was still here.

I put the photograph back in the envelope. Taped it carefully inside the coat lining. Hung the coat back in its place.

Not yet.

But soon.

I walked back to the kitchen and started chopping vegetables for a dinner I'd eat alone.

Five more days.

Then Lauren Cunningham would disappear forever.

And Lauren Warren—Criminal Intelligence Officer, Interpol—would walk out of this penthouse and destroy everyone who'd ever mistaken her silence for weakness.
